• 1. Introduction

  NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas opened on the 24th of August 2002 with a preseason football game that the visiting Miami Dolphins won 24-3. But the crowd that filed in that night wasn't just watching a football game. They were walking into something that had never existed before: the first NFL facility anywhere in the country with a retractable roof. That roof can swing fully open or closed in as little as seven minutes. It weighs enough that it rides on a 675-foot-long super-truss. And it cost $352 million to build the whole thing. What drives a city to construct a stadium like this? What does it take to keep it relevant for more than two decades? And what happens when a building designed for football ends up hosting rodeos, Super Bowls, world leaders, and a FIFA World Cup?

• 2. Replacing a Legend

  Houston NFL Holdings approached the architecture firm HOK Sport, now known as Populous, in 1997. The goal was specific: replace the Astrodome with a new football home that would feel like an open-air venue but carry all the protection and comfort of an indoor arena. The Astrodome had hosted NFL football for decades, but its fixed roof and aging bones were no longer enough. Groundbreaking for the new stadium happened on the 9th of March 2000. The building was officially topped off in October 2001, and construction wrapped in 30 months. The design team included architects from Hermes Reed Architects and Lockwood, Andrews and Newnam, working alongside engineers from Walter P Moore and Uni-Systems. Together they applied what they called the principles of kinetic architecture. The result was a structure measuring roughly 1.9 million square feet. The rodeo's space demands shaped that number as much as the NFL did, because from the very beginning this building was designed for two co-tenants.

• 3. Engineering the Roof

  The retractable roof at NRG Stadium is made of fabric, not the heavy steel panels typical of older domed venues. Two large panels sit above the field; when retracted, they split apart at the 50-yard line and rest over each end zone. Ten parallel, tri-chord trusses carry the panels along two sets of rails, each rail supported by a 675-foot super-truss running the length of the stadium. A computer in the press box controls the entire operation, displaying live images of each panel's position and receiving real-time feedback from every mechanical component in the roof. The panels move at up to 35 feet per minute. That speed means a full open or close cycle takes as little as seven minutes. The rest of the building carries the same sense of openness: the concourses are lined with expansive glass that makes them feel outdoors even when the roof is shut. At night, the glass causes the entire structure to appear lit from within. The stadium also holds more than 7,000 club seats and 186 luxury suites.

• 4. Hurricane Ike

  On the night of the 12th and the 13th of September 2008, Hurricane Ike hit the Gulf Coast of Texas. NRG Stadium, then still called Reliant Stadium, took a direct hit. Part of the roof cladding tore away. Wind and water damaged other sections of the structure. Debris collected inside the building. Stadium authorities confirmed no significant structural damage beyond the roof itself, but the Houston Texans' home opener against the Baltimore Ravens, scheduled for September 14, had to be postponed. That game was initially moved back one day, then pushed all the way to week 10, the 9th of November, when NFL schedulers shuffled multiple bye weeks to accommodate the displaced matchups. The Cincinnati Bengals and the Texans each lost their scheduled bye weeks in the reshuffling. The stadium reopened on the 5th of October 2008, when Houston hosted the Indianapolis Colts. A Houston-based rope access firm, Reel Group Americas, completed the repairs on the 13th of February 2009.

• 5. The Rodeo Partnership

  Leroy Shafer, assistant general manager for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo's marketing department, put it plainly: "The building is as much for the rodeo as it is for the National Football League." That wasn't hyperbole. The stadium's design includes a dedicated service area level beneath the lower bowl on the north end of the building specifically to house rodeo livestock. Bulls, broncs, steers, and roping calves load and unload from a dock on the same north side. Rolling doors divide the dock during performances, keeping food deliveries separate from livestock. A 42-foot concert stage sits at the south end of the stadium during rodeo events, then moves to the center of the facility by hydraulic drive for the evening performances. The first rodeo at the stadium was held in February 2003, less than six months after the building opened. On the 25th of February 2012, the Professional Bull Riders' Built Ford Tough Series came to the stadium for the first time, marking the first PBR event at RodeoHouston and the organization's first Houston event in eleven years.

• 6. Super Bowls and Big Nights

  On the 1st of February 2004, NRG Stadium hosted Super Bowl XXXVIII, where the New England Patriots defeated the Carolina Panthers 32-29 in front of 71,525 fans. That game became nationally known for a controversial halftime show. Super Bowl LI arrived in 2017, again pitting the Patriots against an NFC South team, this time the Atlanta Falcons. New England won 34-28. It was the largest comeback in Super Bowl history and the first Super Bowl game to require overtime. On the 5th of April 2009, the stadium hosted WrestleMania 25. On the 8th of January 2024, it held the College Football Playoff National Championship, where the Michigan Wolverines faced the Washington Huskies. On the 25th of December 2024, Beyonce headlined the first ever halftime show for the NFL's Christmas Gameday broadcast. On the 14th of June 2025, Metallica drew more than 75,000 fans during their M72 World Tour, setting a new attendance record for the venue. Taylor Swift became the first act in stadium history to sell out three shows on a single tour when she returned for The Eras Tour in 2023.

• 7. Soccer and the World Cup

  NRG Stadium has hosted the United States men's national soccer team and the Mexico national team regularly since the early 2000s. The venue's attendance record was set during a preparation match between those two sides. On the 8th of February 2008, a US-Mexico friendly drew a capacity crowd of 70,103. In June 2016, the Copa America Centenario brought one of its semifinals to Houston, where Argentina beat the United States 4-0. During that match, Lionel Messi scored a free kick and became Argentina's all-time leading scorer. The stadium is set to host seven matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup: five group stage games, a Round of 32 match, and a Round of 16 game on the 4th of July 2026. For the duration of the tournament, the building carries the temporary name Houston Stadium in line with FIFA's rules on commercially sponsored venue names. Ahead of the tournament, commercial signage began coming down in April 2026 as part of a formal neutralization process.

• 8. Names and What Comes Next

  The naming rights deal that attached NRG Energy to the stadium was signed in 2000, worth $300 million over 32 years. The building was originally called Reliant Stadium after Reliant Energy, then renamed NRG Stadium on the 19th of March 2014 when NRG Energy became the parent company. On the 19th of April 2023, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo renamed the stadium NRG Stadium (Taylor's Version) for a three-day window around Taylor Swift's Eras Tour dates from April 21-23. After the 2026 World Cup ends, NRG Energy announced on the 15th of April 2026 that the stadium will return to the Reliant Stadium name and the surrounding complex will again be called Reliant Park. The decision followed polling of the team and company. New Reliant signage is scheduled to be in place before the first Texans preseason game of the 2026 season.
