  • Mckenna Grace was four years old when her great-grandmother gave her a collection of Shirley Temple films on DVD. That present was the first time she showed any interest in acting. Within a few years she was standing in front of cameras, and within a decade she was one of the busiest young performers in American film and television. She has played geniuses, murderers and the younger selves of famous characters. She has also written a screenplay, released pop records and gone through major surgery. How does a girl from Texas build that kind of career so early? What did it mean to be a child actor trusted with dark, adult material? And what does she do when the camera is off?

  • On the 25th of June 2006, Mckenna Grace was born in Grapevine, Texas. She is the only child of Ross Burge, an orthopedic surgeon, and Crystal Grace, who worked as a medical sales representative. As a small child she lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Cheerleading, gymnastics, tap and ballet made up her early training. She also entered beauty pageants, where she was crowned Tiny Miss Texas.

Her acting teacher was the sister of Morgan Fairchild, and she advised the family to find an agent. At the age of five, Grace won her first part, in a commercial. Her agent later suggested a trip to Los Angeles to test the market for film and television roles. After she landed parts in a Disney XD sitcom and a comedy-drama film, the whole family moved to the city. Her father took a medical residency in Ventura.

Grace has never attended a regular school. She has been homeschooled, with tutors on set. In 2017 she said she joined a weekly creative writing workshop with other homeschooled students. In 2021 she took a college course on media aesthetics. Her assignments kept asking her to write about The Handmaid's Tale, and she had to do so without mentioning her own work on the show. That series would soon become one of the most talked-about chapters of her career.

  • Crash & Bernstein, a Disney XD sitcom, gave Grace her acting debut as the recurring character Jasmine Bernstein. She returned for the second season and stayed with the show until 2014. During those years she also made a guest appearance on The Goodwin Games, a sitcom on Fox. In 2013 she made her film debut in Goodbye World, a comedy-drama that disappointed critics.

Between 2013 and 2015, Grace played Faith Newman in the soap opera The Young and the Restless. In 2015 she appeared as the young Caroline Forbes in The Vampire Diaries. TVLine put the appearance on a list of the best flashback castings on television and wrote: "It's one thing to look like the younger version of a character, but Grace even cried like Caroline". Three films released in 2016 followed: Mr. Church, The Angry Birds Movie and Independence Day: Resurgence. All three drew negative reviews.

In September 2015, Grace joined the cast of the drama Gifted. Her character, Mary Adler, is a seven-year-old with extraordinary intellect. The filmmakers chose her for her "childlike charm yet old-soul maturity" and for her chemistry with co-star Chris Evans. To prepare, she watched films about child prodigies, including I Am Sam from 2001 and In America from 2002. She also turned to songwriting as a memory aid for the complex mathematical problems that Mary solves.

Gifted reached audiences in 2017 and became her breakthrough. Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called her "an irresistible force" and described her scenes with Evans as "sensational". The performance earned a Critics' Choice Movie Award nomination for Best Young Performer. The same year, she was asked to take on a role that required ice skates.

  • I, Tonya, released in 2017, cast Grace as the young Tonya Harding. She has said it was the most physically demanding role she had ever taken, because she had to learn to ice skate. Harding was a skilled jumper from an early age, so a double performed the spins, the jump combinations and the double lutz. Critics received the film warmly and singled out its cast. Christy Lemire of RogerEbert.com praised Grace's portrayal of Harding's angst and heartache.

In 2018, Netflix's horror series The Haunting of Hill House gave her the part of young Theodora, known as Theo, Crain. She dyed her hair dark brown for the role. One reviewer wrote that she played Theo with "wisdom way beyond her years".

That same year, Grace guest-starred in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina holiday special titled "A Midwinter's Tale", playing a younger version of Sabrina. Kiernan Shipka plays the teenage Sabrina, and the series creator, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, said Shipka immediately suggested Grace after hearing a pre-teen Sabrina would appear. Around this time she also began a recurring role on the CBS sitcom Young Sheldon as Paige Swanson, a child prodigy and rival to the title character.

Captain Marvel, in 2019, had her play a 13-year-old version of its heroine. The film grossed over $1.1 billion and ranks among the highest-earning films ever made. In 2021 she played the young version of Annabelle Wallis's character in the horror film Malignant.

The pattern became part of her reputation. IndieWire named her one of the best child television actors of 2018. The Hollywood Reporter placed her among its top 30 stars under 18 in both 2018 and 2019. In 2020 the Hollywood Critics Association added her to its "Next Generation of Hollywood" list. By 2022, Yahoo! Entertainment was calling her "one of the most successful and prolific child actors of her generation".

  • The Bad Seed premiered on Lifetime in September 2018, with Grace as Emma Grossman, a girl who murders anyone who crosses her. The film remakes a 1956 movie, which was itself adapted from William March's 1954 novel. Grace had long wanted to play a horror villain. She studied the 1956 film and worked to copy the gait and facial expressions of Rhoda Penmark, that version's counterpart to Emma. She also consulted Patty McCormack, the actress who played Rhoda.

Critics praised the result. The Hollywood Reporter said her ability to be "unnerving, sweet and occasionally funny" decides whether the film works, adding that "she nails every beat". The A.V. Club admired "the calculatedness of Emma's demeanor while giving a giggly edge to lines".

Annabelle Comes Home arrived in 2019 as the seventh installment of The Conjuring Universe. Grace played Judy Warren, daughter of the paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. Director Gary Dauberman said he was "very, very fortunate and very, very happy" to cast her, and he cited her professionalism and talent. The film grossed over $231 million and received mixed reviews, though her performance drew praise. The New York Observer called her "terrific" and admired her fresh take on the "horror movie kid" cliche.

When the COVID-19 pandemic halted filming of The Handmaid's Tale in 2020, Grace and her father decided to write a follow-up to The Bad Seed, since Lifetime wanted a sequel. He drafted the general structure, and she gave feedback, mostly on dialogue. Lifetime executive vice president Tanya Lopez said the network was "blown away" by the concept. Grace described playing her own script this way: "It wasn't my interpretation of someone else's writing or character... It was me being able to act out the scenes as I had envisioned them." The Bad Seed Returns premiered on the 5th of September 2022. It was the first project from her company, Beautiful Ghosts Productions, and she served as executive producer.

TheWrap labeled her a scream queen, and The Independent wrote that she has "become a staple of the modern horror genre". In 2025 she starred in Five Nights at Freddy's 2. In 2026 she took a supporting role in the slasher Scream 7, having first auditioned for the part of Sidney's daughter, Tatum. The film drew negative reviews, and /Film believed she was "tragically wasted", but it succeeded commercially. Next on her list is Kiss of Death, a horror film to be released by Blumhouse Productions.

  • In 2021, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale, an adaptation of a 1985 novel, brought Grace in as Esther Keyes. Esther is an intelligent and rebellious 14-year-old who has been abused and married off to an older Commander. The producers chose Grace for her ability to portray scariness and awfulness. She argued that someone the same age as the character had to play the part, because many 14-year-olds experience such abuse every day. In her words: "If it makes people upset or uncomfortable that an actual 14-year-old is having to talk about how she was raped and it's acting, then maybe that will make you want to do something for actual girls who are going through this."

The fourth season premiered on the 27th of April 2021 to positive reviews. Entertainment Weekly praised "a memorable turn as a tyrannical child bride", and Den of Geek noted her "remarkable self-possession". At the 73rd Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards, she was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series. That made her the tenth youngest actor ever nominated at the Emmys and the first child recognized for a guest acting award.

In the fifth season, which arrived in September 2022, Grace returned as Esther. Den of Geek compared her screams in the sixth episode to those of Linda Blair in The Exorcist from 1973. The outlet said they "distilled seasons of The Handmaid's Tale protest against misogyny into one primal outburst".

In March 2022, Grace joined Peacock's true crime miniseries A Friend of the Family as Jan Broberg, who was kidnapped twice and sexually abused by a family friend as a child. Hendrix Yancey shared the role with her. Grace spent as much time with Yancey as she could and copied her mannerisms and smile. Broberg herself produced the show, and the two discussed subtle signs of stress, such as nail biting. Grace called the job "really emotionally and sometimes physically exhausting", since she had to blend three versions of Broberg: her own, Yancey's and the real woman's. The series premiered on the 6th of October 2022. Common Sense Media wrote that "Grace does a terrific job conveying the mixture of vulnerability and growing dread her character is experiencing".

  • Ghostbusters: Afterlife reached theaters on the 19th of November 2021 as the sequel to Ghostbusters from 1984 and Ghostbusters II from 1989. Grace played Phoebe Spengler, and she cut and dyed her hair for the part. The film grossed over $204 million against a $75 million budget. Critics were ambivalent about the film but warm about her. Mark Feeney of The Boston Globe wrote that it "has its moments, most of them owing to a quite-phenomenal Mckenna Grace". Gizmodo called her performance "instantly unforgettable,... truly revelatory, and star-making". She received a Critics' Choice Super Award nomination for Best Actress in a Science Fiction/Fantasy Movie.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire followed in March 2024. To prepare, Grace studied Harold Ramis's performance as Egon Spengler, which she named her "biggest inspiration". Emily Zemler of The New York Observer wrote that Grace "is very compelling and should have been allowed to properly lead the film". Frank Scheck of The Hollywood Reporter suggested she could become "the Ghostbusters franchise's MVP".

Troop Zero, in 2019, cast her as a misfit girl who wants to send messages to space and enters a nationwide competition with a group of Birdie Scouts. Grace cut her hair asymmetrically, with one side near the shoulder and the other by the chin. She also avoided washing it or tidying up, because she wanted to look as wild as the character. Variety called her a "magnetic young performer". The A.V. Club found her approach "refreshingly non-intuitive" because she conveyed loss through excitement rather than misery.

Her voice work includes the younger Daphne Blake in 2020's Scoob!, with a sequel, Scoob! Holiday Haunt, canceled in August 2022. In 2021 she voiced a horserider in DreamWorks' Spirit Untamed. On the 12th of May 2023, Disney+ released the science fiction adventure Crater, in which she played Addison, daughter of a respected scientist from Earth. She signed on after the screenplay made her cry. Variety and Entertainment.ie both judged her the film's finest performer. Later in 2023 she voiced Skye in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.

In 2025 she starred in What We Hide, in Amy Wang's satirical drama Slanted, and in the thriller Anniversary. Her biggest commercial hits that year were Regretting You, based on a Colleen Hoover novel, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2. Critics panned both, though they praised her and co-star Mason Thames in the former. Slant Magazine named her the "lone bright spot" of Regretting You and admired her "recognizably real" portrayal of vulnerability and naivety. Next, she is slated to play Maysilee Donner in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping and Daphne Blake in Netflix's live-action Scooby-Doo: Origins series.

  • Photo Finish Records signed Grace in 2020, and she released her debut single, "Haunted House", with a music video in November 2021. She co-wrote it with Lily Kincade, and Nathaniel Motte produced it. Grace wrote it during a rough stretch of the pandemic and said "you could take it as a breakup song, but it could also be about a friend or a family member or any kind of relationship that's ended". It was not written for Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Director Jason Reitman heard it, and it ended up playing over the closing credits. NPR said the song "has some surprising twists and turns and spells out the beginnings of an exciting new career for Mckenna Grace".

Her tastes ran from heavy metal and rap to Taylor Swift and Korn. She named Swift and Lana Del Rey as her key influences because of their storytelling and vivid imagery. She took up the ukulele after watching Grace VanderWaal win America's Got Talent in 2016. Conan Gray's 2020 album Kid Krow moved her during the pandemic and pushed her to write her own songs. Her first extended play drew its sound from Radiohead, Hole and Roar, with emotional rawness from Mitski. She also composes music and builds playlists to help her connect with characters on set.

She released two singles in 2022, "Do All My Friends Hate Me?" and "You Ruined Nirvana". That October she had spinal surgery. She had been diagnosed with scoliosis in 2018 at age 12. During the filming of Ghostbusters: Afterlife she wore a back brace but found it uncomfortable, and her schedule meant she could wear it only at night rather than the intended 22 hours a day. After her spinal curvature passed 45 degrees, surgery became necessary to keep it from affecting her lungs. The operation reduced the curve to six degrees. On the 18th of November 2022 she released "Self Dysmorphia", inspired by the condition. She said: "it's a little bit weird to put these deeply personal thoughts and struggles out into the world. But, hopefully,... people who are going through the same thing will feel less alone." She performed it on The Today Show that December.

Bittersweet 16, her first extended play, came out on the 3rd of March 2023 after the songs "Post Party Trauma", "Ugly Crier" and "Checkered Vans". She had wanted to write a full album, but Photo Finish suggested starting with an EP. It has a pop rock and pop-punk sound and deals with heartache, body image and social anxiety. Autumn Leaves arrived on the 13th of October 2023 and turns to folk and young heartbreak. Billboard said its single "Catch Me" shows her skill at storytelling and "woozy, richly textured pop". She also recorded "Bark to the Beat" for the PAW Patrol movie. Later releases include "Natalie", "Gentleman" and "Swim Team", and she has performed at Lollapalooza. She calls songwriting her "therapy".

In 2026 she was featured on the heavy metal band Ice Nine Kills's song "Twisting the Knife", part of the Scream 7 soundtrack. It topped Billboard's Hot Hard Rock Songs chart and gave her her first chart entry.

In 2022, Grace said she prefers a private life so she "can have a childhood and figure herself out as a teenager". Her mother described their home as "extremely normal". As of 2021, her mother managed her Instagram and Twitter accounts and approved her TikTok posts. As of February 2026, Grace is in a relationship with Mason Thames, her co-star in Nimrods and Regretting You. The two attended the 98th Academy Awards together.
