Disney XD
At 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time on the 13th of February 2009, the lights went out on Toon Disney and flickered back to life as Disney XD. The first show to air was an episode of Phineas and Ferb titled Dude We're Getting the Band Back Together. This moment marked the end of an animation-focused channel that had launched in April 1998. It also signaled the beginning of a new strategy for older children between six and eleven years old. Gary Marsh, President of Entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide, explained that the letters X and D held no specific meaning. He stated they simply looked cool to him. The letter X carried many positive associations for his team. They hoped the audience would imbue the name with their own attributes. An emoticon for laughter also shared the same initials.
Disney XD shifted its focus from pure animation to include live-action series like Aaron Stone. This original series premiered at 7:00 p.m. shortly after the launch. The network began acquiring properties outside its own studios to fill schedules. On the 17th of November 2016, the Pokémon anime series moved from Cartoon Network to this channel. The twentieth season known as Sun & Moon aired as a sneak peek on the 5th of December 2016. Regular broadcasts started on the 12th of May 2017. A deal with Two 4 the Money and MarVista Entertainment gave global rights to four picture development projects by June 2014. In 2018, shows like Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Milo Murphy's Law moved premieres to Disney Channel while reruns stayed behind. DuckTales returned to the channel in 2020 for its final seasons which ended in 2021.
The DXP block introduced video gaming-related programming aimed at teens starting the 15th of July 2017. It ran from 9:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. Sister network ESPN produced content including the SportsCenter High-5 countdown show. Coverage of the 2018 Overwatch League appeared within this block. On July 16, the channel presented finals of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U tournaments at Evo 2017. This event complemented coverage across ESPN networks and Twitch. An agreement with Blizzard Entertainment began airing Overwatch League matches on ABC and Disney XD starting with the 2018 playoffs. The NFL Pro Bowl aired as a simulcast alongside ESPN and ABC beginning in 2019. A Big City Greens-themed presentation of an NHL game aired during March 2023 broadcasts.
