• 1. Introduction

  Disney XD once reached 82 million pay television households in the United States, at its peak in 2013. Today that number sits closer to 44 million. Something happened to a channel built for six to eleven year olds beyond a simple ratings slump. This is a channel with a name that Disney itself has never fully explained. It once operated in more than a dozen countries and regions worldwide. What pushed so many viewers and carriers away? And why does a network with an unexplained name still survive when it has already outlasted the channel it replaced?

• 2. Replacing Toon Disney

  At 12:00 a.m. Eastern Time on the 13th of February 2009, Disney XD signed on the air. The first episode broadcast was Phineas and Ferb's "Dude, We're Getting the Band Back Together." At 7:00 p.m. that same day, the channel premiered its first original series, Aaron Stone. Two new animated series, Kid vs. Kat and Jimmy Two-Shoes, joined the initial lineup.

  Toon Disney, the animation-focused channel that Disney XD replaced, had launched on the 18th of April 1998. That channel later introduced a live-action and animation block called Jetix, starting in 2004. Many of Disney XD's early programs, especially animated ones, previously aired on Toon Disney as part of the Jetix block. Internationally, Jetix channels began rebranding as Disney XD starting with the France-based service on the 1st of April 2009.

  Disney XD shares its name with an unrelated media player and mini-site on Disney.com called Disney Xtreme Digital. Gary Marsh, President of Entertainment for Disney Channel Worldwide, said the letters "XD" do not have an actual meaning. He explained the name was chosen simply because it looked "cool." Marsh noted that "the letter X has many cool associations." He added that "the beauty of it is the audience can imbue it with all sorts of positive attributes." XD is also a common emoticon for laughter.

  Within the year, the channel would premiere its first original television movie, Skyrunners, on the 27th of November 2009.

• 3. Chasing Franchises

  On the 1st of April 2012, Disney XD launched a programming block called Marvel Universe, following Disney's 2009 acquisition of Marvel Entertainment. The block began with the premiere of Ultimate Spider-Man, followed by the returning series The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Five short series using short-form animated and live-action interstitials also aired within the block. Later additions included Spider-Man (2017), Avengers Assemble, Guardians of the Galaxy, and shorts titled "Marvel Mash-Up" and "Fury Files."

  By June 2014, Disney XD agreed to a multi-picture development deal with Two 4 the Money and MarVista Entertainment. MarVista held the global rights under that agreement.

  On the 17th of November 2016, it was announced that the Pokémon anime series would move to Disney XD from Cartoon Network, its previous broadcaster. The twentieth season, Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon, was the first to air, debuting as a sneak peek on the 5th of December 2016. Its regular broadcast began on the 12th of May 2017.

  Disney XD's Anime Block launched on the 18th of February 2017 and aired every Saturday, showcasing Pokémon alongside Yo-kai Watch and Beyblade Burst. It was discontinued in 2020 after Netflix acquired the streaming rights to Pokémon.

  On the 12th of August 2017, Disney XD premiered a reboot of DuckTales. In 2018, four of the channel's original series moved their premieres to Disney Channel. These were Star vs. the Forces of Evil, Milo Murphy's Law, DuckTales, and Big Hero 6: The Series. Disney XD continued to air reruns of all four. Both DuckTales and Big Hero 6: The Series returned to Disney XD in 2020 for their final seasons, which ended in 2021.

  Two More Eggs, a short-form filler lasting one to three minutes, would soon fill the gaps between these franchise shows during commercial breaks.

• 4. Filling The Clock

  Randomation Animation, a Saturday morning block, ran from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time starting on the 13th of July 2013. It featured shows including Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures, Xiaolin Chronicles, Packages from Planet X, and Camp Lakebottom. Also featured were Max Steel, Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, and Phineas and Ferb.

  Show Me the Monday, a Monday night block, premiered in late 2013. It carried new episodes of Disney XD original series such as Lab Rats, Mighty Med, and Gravity Falls.

  Animacation ran on weekday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. during the summer of 2014. The block mixed new episodes and reruns with the premieres of Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future, Boyster, and The 7D.

  Disney Channel and Disney Jr., Disney XD's sister networks, advertise mainly through program promotions and sponsorships. Disney XD instead ran traditional television commercials alongside promotions for its own shows. The channel's regular schedule otherwise combined animated and live-action originals with shows inherited from Disney Channel. It also aired Disney Channel Original Movies and theatrically released feature films.

  By the mid-2010s, cartoons would share Disney XD's clock with an entirely new block called DXP, built around competitive video gaming.

• 5. Game Night

  DXP, a prime-time block built around video gaming for teenagers, launched on the 15th of July 2017. It ran from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Eastern Time. The block drew on Disney-owned multi-channel network Maker Studios, which produced the weekly Polaris Primetime and curated content from its member personalities. It also pulled in ESPN for esports coverage, Vice Media's Waypoint, and outside producers such as IGN.

  On the 16th of July 2017, DXP presented coverage of the Evo 2017 finals. Those finals featured Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Street Fighter V. That coverage ran alongside broader coverage of the event across ESPN networks and Twitch. On the 11th of July 2018, ESPN announced a multi-year deal with Blizzard Entertainment to air Overwatch League matches. Coverage would run on ABC, Disney XD, and the ESPN networks, beginning with the 2018 playoffs.

  Sister network ESPN also produced sports-oriented content for Disney XD. For a period, the channel ran an interstitial program called SportsCenter High-5, a countdown of sports highlights. In 2019, Disney XD began airing the NFL's Pro Bowl in a simulcast alongside ESPN and ABC. In March 2023, the channel took part in ESPN's NHL coverage. Disney Channel and Disney XD aired a 3D animated, Big City Greens-themed presentation of a game.

  None of this reached viewers through a cable box alone. Disney XD's shows were also streaming through the channel's own apps, soon to be folded into something called DisneyNOW.

• 6. Beyond The Cable Box

  Disney XD HD, a 720p simulcast of the channel, launched alongside the original standard-definition signal and is carried by most providers except Dish. The channel's original programming is produced and broadcast in HD. So are feature films, Disney Channel original movies made after 2005, and select earlier episodes and films.

  On the 28th of September 2017, the Disney Channel app relaunched as DisneyNOW. It combined the separate apps for Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, and Radio Disney into one universal app. Before that, the mobile app had been known as WATCH Disney XD, until a rebranding in June 2016. It offered live and on-demand streaming of the channel's content online. Access to live video and the newest episodes required logging in with a participating television provider. A limited selection of free episodes needed no login. Both the standalone Disney XD app and its predecessor closed on the 15th of February 2018.

  While its domestic apps had just consolidated into one, Disney XD's channels abroad were already on a separate and far less permanent path.

• 7. Going Dark Worldwide

  Most of Disney XD's international channels closed after 2019, following the launch of Disney+. On the 6th of January 2019, the channel closed in Australia and New Zealand. Its programs moved to Disney Channel there, for what became that network's final year before it too folded into Disney+.

  In India, Disney XD was rebranded as Marvel HQ on the 9th of January 2019. It was rebranded again as Super Hungama on the 1st of March 2022. Italy's channel closed on the 1st of October 2019, after its Sky carriage agreement was not renewed.

  Spanish and German versions of the channel closed on the 1st of April 2020, with the French network following a week later. Singapore's channel closed on the 1st of June 2020, and the British and continental African feeds closed on the 1st of October 2020.

  The Southeast Asian, Scandinavian, and Middle Eastern feeds all closed on the 31st of December 2020. Japanese and Turkish channels closed on the 31st of January 2021, and the Latin American feed closed on the 31st of March 2022.

  The Netherlands feed closed on the 1st of May 2025. The most recent closure came in Canada on the 1st of September 2025. Since then, Disney XD has kept only one international channel running, in Poland.

• 8. Cable's Vanishing Act

  Streaming alternatives, most notably Disney's own Disney+, have steadily drawn viewers away from the cable and satellite packages that once carried Disney XD. In current retransmission consent negotiations, Disney has generally treated the channel as less essential than its other properties.

  Verizon Fios dropped Disney XD entirely during negotiations in 2025. Charter Spectrum did not carry the channel at all between 2023 and 2025.

  Whether Disney XD survives its next round of carriage talks remains uncertain. Verizon Fios has already cut it loose once, and Charter Spectrum shut it out for two years.
