  • Florence Pugh insisted on jumping from the top of Merdeka 118 herself, with no stunt double, while making Thunderbolts in 2025. Marvel Studios was reluctant at first because of insurance concerns. Pugh kept pressing, and after conversations that included Kevin Feige, the studio gave in. Her reasoning was blunt: "It's our duty as actors to protect and defend your characters and to put in the life." That stubborn streak runs through the career of this English actress, who has been nominated for an Academy Award and has won a British Independent Film Award. Yet her story begins with a child who spent far too much time in hospital. How did that child become a fixture of blockbusters and prestige dramas alike? Why does she keep choosing roles that frighten her? And what makes audiences root for characters they feel they ought to dislike?

  • Oxford is where Florence Pugh was born, on the 3rd of January 1996. Her mother, Deborah, was a dancer, and her father, Clinton, worked as a restaurateur. She grew up with three siblings: Toby Sebastian, an actor and musician, Arabella Gibbins, an actress, and Rafaela, known as Raffie.

Tracheomalacia, a windpipe condition that causes breathing problems, shaped her early childhood. It sent her to hospital again and again. When she was three, the family moved to Manilva in Spain, hoping the warmer weather would help her health. They stayed there until she was six, then went back to Oxford.

Back in England, Pugh attended two private schools, Wychwood School and St Edward's School, Oxford. She disliked that neither school supported her ambitions as an actor. Her brother Toby would eventually draw her into his own music.

  • Maisie Williams was Pugh's co-star in The Falling, the 2014 drama that marked her professional debut while she was still in sixth form. She played a precocious teenager. Tara Brady of The Irish Times called her "remarkable", and Oliver Lyttelton of IndieWire called her "striking". That same year the BFI London Film Festival nominated her for Best British Newcomer. The London Film Critics' Circle nominated her as Young British / Irish Performer of the Year.

Studio City, a dramedy pilot from 2015, followed. Pugh played a singer-songwriter whose father was played by Eric McCormack. The pilot was never picked up as a series. Pugh later spoke of the experience in negative terms, pointing to pressure she felt to change her appearance.

Lady Macbeth, released in 2016, won her back to cinema. The film was based on Nikolai Leskov's novella Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District. Pugh played Katherine, an unhappy bride who turns violent. She said she was drawn to characters with "confusing or at least interesting" motivations. Guy Lodge of Variety admired the "complex, under-the-skin transformation" she brought to the part. The performance won her the British Independent Film Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a British Independent Film. That year she also appeared in the first series of the ITV detective show Marcella.

In 2018, the 71st British Academy Film Awards nominated Pugh for the BAFTA Rising Star Award. She played Cordelia opposite Anthony Hopkins in Richard Eyre's television film King Lear. She also appeared in the short film Leading Lady Parts, made in support of the Time's Up initiative. In the Netflix historical film Outlaw King she played Elizabeth de Burgh, alongside Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce. Charles Bramesco of The Guardian found her excellent "despite her thankless role".

John le Carré's spy novel The Little Drummer Girl became a six-part miniseries, with Pugh as an actress drawn into an espionage plot. Critics were divided on the series but not on her. Richard Lawson of Vanity Fair called her "terrific throughout" and said she "smartly mixes earthiness with sophistication, wisdom with naïveté." Those performances set the stage for a 2019 that observers treated as her international breakthrough.

  • Sundance Film Festival audiences met Pugh as the wrestler Paige in Fighting with My Family, which premiered there in 2019. The comedy-drama follows Paige's career, and reviews were positive. Geoffrey Macnab of The Independent found her "completely convincing as the wrestler". He heard in her the "scruffy glamour and self-deprecating humour" of the real Paige.

Sweden is where Midsommar sends its American couple, played by Pugh and Jack Reynor, and where they run into a cult. Ari Aster directed the horror film. Pugh played Dani Ardor, a woman in deep despair. David Edelstein of Vulture called her performance "amazingly vivid".

Greta Gerwig directed Little Women, an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's novel, which reached cinemas later that year. Pugh played Amy March, a fickle artist, from the age of 12 into adulthood. She has described the character as sitting in a "sweet spot of not knowing how to deal with her emotions". The film received critical acclaim and grossed $209 million. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised the "disarming grace, humor and a willful streak that grows almost imperceptibly into wisdom" she brought to the role. He also admired how she handled its "tricky contradictions". Pugh earned nominations for the BAFTA and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

At the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, she was also awarded the Trophée Chopard.

  • Olivia Wilde directed Don't Worry Darling, a 2022 thriller in which Pugh starred. She allegedly clashed with Wilde during filming, and she limited how much she promoted the film. At the 79th Venice International Film Festival, critics judged her performance better than the film around it.

In The Wonder, adapted from Emma Donoghue's novel of the same name, Pugh played a nurse in 1862. Her character is sent to investigate an alleged supernatural miracle. Kevin Maher of The Times thought her "impossibly vivid and convincing" performance was the film's greatest strength. It earned her another nomination at the British Independent Film Awards.

Zach Braff directed A Good Person in 2023, with Pugh as a car crash survivor. It was her first producing venture. She refused a wig and cut off her own hair for the part. She also wrote and sang two songs for the soundtrack, "The Best Part" and "I Hate Myself".

Shaving her head was again part of the job in We Live in Time, a romantic drama directed by John Crowley. Andrew Garfield and Pugh played a couple facing cancer. Glenn Whipp of the Los Angeles Times judged her the best thing about the production.

  • Yelena Belova, a spy, is the character Pugh plays in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Black Widow in 2021. She said the film was about "girls who are stolen from around the world". Reviews were positive and singled out her work. Caryn James of BBC Culture said she made Yelena "the most vibrant person in the film, more lived-in than most action-movie characters". Pugh played Yelena again later that year in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. Thunderbolts brought the character back in 2025, and reviews of the film and of Pugh were again positive.

Goldilocks was a voice role, in the DreamWorks animated film Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The 2022 film earned over $480 million worldwide. Pugh also provided the English-language voice of Kiriko in The Boy and the Heron.

Christopher Nolan cast her as Jean Tatlock, a member of the Communist Party USA, in Oppenheimer, starring Cillian Murphy in the title role. Dan Jolin of Empire wrote that she "elegantly dominates her few scenes". The film grossed over $967 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing release of her career. As part of its ensemble, she won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture.

Princess Irulan is her part in Dune: Part Two, the 2024 sequel to the 2021 science fiction film. Reviews were positive, and the film took in over $711 million worldwide.

  • Valentino was the label at a 2022 show where Pugh wore a sheer pink gown, and the reaction was sharp. Some people objected because the dress showed her nipples. She defended her choice, and her body, on Instagram. A year later she wore another transparent gown to a Valentino event. Harper's Bazaar and British Vogue have called her fashion choices "bold", "daring" and "unique".

Social media is where journalists most often note her outspokenness, on subjects such as body shaming, cyberbullying and beauty standards. Raven Smith of British Vogue wrote that her sincerity, curiosity about others and humility set her apart from more guarded actors. Andrea Cuttler of Harper's Bazaar said her open persona is now expected because she built "a career playing women who refuse to be silenced".

Annie Lourd of The Independent credits her with "carving out a niche playing difficult characters you know you should hate, but, for whatever reason, end up rooting for". Pugh says she gravitates toward parts that terrify or challenge her. In her words, "all of my movies have that element of women being forced into a corner, forced into an opinion, forced into a way of life... And then finally, something cracks".

In 2022, a readers' poll by Empire magazine voted her one of the 50 greatest actors of all time. The magazine called her "one of the very best of her generation" and credited her "grounded empathy". Forbes put her on its 30 Under 30 list for entertainment in Europe in 2019. Time placed her on its 100 Next list in 2021 and in its Next Generation Leaders list in 2023.

  • YouTube was Pugh's first stage for music. From 2013 to 2016 she posted cover songs there under the name Flossie Rose. On the 15th of May 2021 she appeared on her brother's song "Midnight". She later featured in music videos for that song in 2023, for Rachel Chinouriri's "Never Need Me" in 2024, and for Yungblud's "Zombie" in 2025.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, she took part in the series Acting for a Cause. She joined a live reading of Kenneth Lonergan's play This Is Our Youth to raise money for the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a nonprofit.

From 2019 to 2022, Pugh was in a relationship with the American actor and filmmaker Zach Braff. They met on the short film In the Time It Takes to Get There, which Braff directed, and they lived together in Los Angeles. Their 21-year age gap drew public scrutiny, and she defended it. In 2023 she dated the photographer Charlie Gooch.

At the Together for Palestine fundraising event in London in September 2025, she said, "Silence in the face of such suffering is not neutrality; it is complicity in a crime." She urged attendees to call on governments to respond to the situation in Gaza. She has also signed a petition urging the British government to end its interference in Gaza's affairs.

Three projects wait ahead. Pugh will play Cathy Ames in a limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden. She will also return as Yelena Belova in Avengers: Doomsday and as Princess Irulan in Dune: Part Three.
