F1 (film)
F1, marketed as F1 the Movie, is a 2025 American sports drama directed by Joseph Kosinski. Brad Pitt plays a Formula One driver who returns after a 30-year absence to rescue his former teammate's underdog team from collapse. Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies and Javier Bardem play the people around him.
The film did not stay hidden inside a studio. Its cars rolled out during real Grand Prix weekends, alongside real teams and real drivers. How do you stage a fictional racing team inside a genuine world championship? Who would sabotage a team that is already losing? And how did audiences, critics and hardened racing fans respond when it reached cinemas?
On the 3rd of December 2021, a bidding war began over an untitled film starring Brad Pitt. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Joseph Kosinski and screenwriter Ehren Kruger were already attached. The three had worked together on Top Gun: Maverick (2022). Lewis Hamilton joined as both a producer and an actor. The studios in the chase were Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Sony Pictures, Universal Pictures and Walt Disney Pictures. Netflix, Apple and Amazon bid as streaming platforms. Pitt was paid $30 million for his involvement.
In November 2022, Claudio Miranda announced that he would shoot the film as cinematographer. Damson Idris was hired in April 2023 after a lengthy casting process. That process included a shortlist of actors driving the car in January 2023. Kerry Condon and Tobias Menzies joined in the following months, and Sarah Niles and Simone Ashley were added as well. In June 2025, Kosinski revealed that Ashley's role had been cut. She remains in the film only as a cameo, credited as herself.
In June 2022, Apple acquired the distribution rights in a package worth $130-140 million before above-the-line compensation. Two years later, in June 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures took over the theatrical, home entertainment and digital purchase rights. Apple kept the subscription streaming rights. On the 5th of July 2024, the title F1 was announced. Kruger received sole credit for the screenplay and shares story credit with Kosinski. Jez Butterworth, Kara Smith, Aaron Sorkin and Christopher Storer earned off-screen "Additional Literary Material" credit.
In May 2024, Matthew Belloni of Puck reported that the budget was $300 million. Bruckheimer disputed the claim and pointed to rebates and sponsorships that lowered the cost. Kosinski was blunter: "I've never had an experience where they were off by this much on a film. I'm not sure where that number came from." Ahead of the 2025 release, some industry sources reported a budget of $200 million, though others still repeated the $300 million figure.
The 1993 Spanish Grand Prix ended Sonny Hayes's Formula One career with a crash. Afterward he becomes a racer-for-hire, weighed down by the sense that he never lived up to his potential. He has just won the 24 Hours of Daytona when his old Lotus teammate, Rubén Cervantes, approaches him. Rubén owns the struggling APXGP team and wants Sonny as its second driver. The terms are blunt. Unless APXGP wins one of the nine remaining Grands Prix, its investors will sell the team. Sonny agrees reluctantly, after Rubén insists that a victory will prove he is the "best in the world".
At APXGP, technical director Kate McKenna and an ambitious rookie named Joshua Pearce are waiting. Joshua fears the failing team could derail his career, so he tries to attract interest from another team. Sonny struggles with modern F1 machinery but quickly diagnoses the team's weaknesses. He proposes enhanced aerodynamics to make up for the cars' lack of speed.
At the British Grand Prix, Sonny and Joshua race against each other instead of together, and both crash out. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Sonny turns the rulebook into a weapon. He deliberately collides with rivals to trigger safety car periods. The tactic lets Joshua close the gap to the leaders and secure APXGP's first top-ten finish.
Rain falls on the Italian Grand Prix, and Sonny tells Joshua to stay on slick tires, trading grip for speed. The gamble lifts Joshua to second place. Then he ignores Sonny's instruction to wait for a straight before passing Max Verstappen. His car skids off the track and bursts into flames. Sonny rescues him, but Joshua is injured and misses the next three races.
Joshua returns at the Belgian Grand Prix more arrogant than before and deliberately forces Sonny into a crash. Sonny accuses him of setting the team back for personal glory. Kate responds by organizing a poker game to show how alike their backgrounds are. Afterward Sonny and Kate spend the night together. He admits to her that he races to recapture the rare moments when he feels untouchable.
An anonymous tip then claims that Kate's car upgrades are illegal, and APXGP is forced to remove them. Sonny is frustrated, and he realizes he has skipped his ritual of carrying a random playing card in the cockpit. At the Las Vegas Grand Prix he drives recklessly and crashes. While he recovers, Rubén learns that the injuries from 1993 left Sonny medically unfit for Formula One, with risks of blindness or death. Rubén fires him for his own safety.
Board member Peter Banning then confesses to Sonny that he orchestrated both Sonny's signing and the anonymous tip. His aim was to sabotage the team and force its sale. He offers Sonny significant compensation to let APXGP fail. Meanwhile Joshua begins applying Sonny's racing techniques, admits fault for his earlier crash and recommits to the team. Sonny hides his blurred vision and headaches and persuades Rubén to let him return. At that moment the FIA clears Kate and restores her upgrades.
The season ends at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where Joshua battles Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc for the lead. Sonny is caught in a minor crash, and the race is red-flagged. That gives APXGP time to repair both cars before a three-lap sprint to the finish. On the restart, Sonny overtakes Leclerc. He then gives up his own chance of victory by holding off Hamilton so Joshua can move into first. On the final lap, Hamilton and Joshua collide, which clears the way for Sonny to take his first F1 win and secure APXGP's future.
Joshua is offered a seat with Mercedes but declines. As the team celebrates, Sonny quietly prepares to leave, parting on good terms with Joshua and promising to see Kate soon. Some time later he lines up for the Baja 1000. Asked what he is racing for, Sonny laughs.
At Paul Ricard in France, Pitt and Idris tested Formula Three and Formula Two cars before filming began. The film's racing car grew out of the Dallara F2 2018, which was stretched, widened and fitted with a Formula One aerodynamic package. Mercedes Applied Science created that package, and Carlin Motorsport ran the cars. Six visually identical chassis were built. Some used the Mecachrome V634 engine and some used GP3 V6 engines. One ran on an electric motor, which prevented overheating during shots in the pit lane. Six more chassis, all remote-controlled, were reserved for filming crashes.
Principal photography began in July 2023 at the Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom. Cameras ran during the British Grand Prix weekend, from the 7th to the 9th of July, but outside the official F1 sessions. APXGP had its own garage and motorhome. Its car sat among the other F1 cars during the mandatory "show and tell" session before the track action. Pitt attended the drivers' briefing with the real drivers. He and Idris stood beside them for the national anthem. Their two cars started at the back of the grid, with stunt drivers handling part of the formation lap.
Martin Brundle, the former F1 driver and Sky Sports F1 pundit, heard the casting news first. Speaking with him at the 2023 British Grand Prix, Pitt confirmed that Javier Bardem would star. Brundle and David Croft later supplied the commentary for the races shown on screen. Leigh Diffey called the 24 Hours of Daytona scene.
Apple designed a custom onboard camera based on the iPhone and powered by one of its A-series chips. With help from Sony, the cameras shrank to about a quarter of the size of those used on Top Gun: Maverick. Up to four could be mounted on a car at once with minimal effect on its weight. The camera bodies and RF transmitters were hidden in the car floors. Panavision built a special remote control that let the cameras pan.
The crew also filmed at the Hungaroring, Spa-Francorchamps, Monza, Zandvoort, Suzuka, Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Las Vegas, Yas Marina and Brands Hatch. Brands Hatch stood in for the onboard Jerez footage and for the fiery crash in the Italian Grand Prix. At the 2024 24 Hours of Daytona, the #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R raced in the livery of the film's fictional Chip Hart Racing team. Multiple replicas of it, plus the #96 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3, were used for filming.
A Lola B2K/10 carried the cameras for high-speed shots, but it struggled to keep up with the modified F2 cars. By the time filming reached Hungary, it had lost oil pressure and suffered a pump failure. It was scrapped and replaced by one of the GP3-engined APXGP cars. Back from the circuits, the APXGP headquarters scenes were filmed at the McLaren Technology Centre. Williams provided its wind tunnel, and the racing simulator scenes were shot at the Mercedes headquarters in Brackley.
The week after filming began at the British Grand Prix, the SAG-AFTRA strike began. The lead actors became unavailable, and only a reduced crew of Equity actors went to the races from then on. Filming had to continue through the following season to make up for the lost races.
The strike was already underway when the production first shot the Monza scenes in Italy, so the cast could not appear. Stunt scenes went ahead, and the plan was to return to Monza the next year. But the race schedule and a re-paving of the entire track made a second round of filming impossible. Visual effects supervisor Ryan Tudhope described the fix: "we shot all of the cast stuff that we needed at Silverstone instead. We shot Silverstone for Monza and then relied on the array vehicle and scanning done in Italy to create a digital version of the Monza backgrounds." Those digital backgrounds replaced what had been shot at Silverstone.
Framestore provided the post-production services, citing work from its studios in Montreal, London and Mumbai. Tudhope returned to work with Kosinski and reused a technique from Top Gun: Maverick, where it had re-skinned jets. This time it replaced the F1 cars captured during real Grands Prix with the fictional black-and-gold APXGP cars. The film contains 2,500 visual effects shots.
During the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, Hans Zimmer announced that he would compose the score. It was his second collaboration with Kosinski after Top Gun: Maverick. It was also his second Formula One-related score, following Rush (2013), directed by Ron Howard. Zimmer co-composed with Steve Mazzaro. Kosinski said the music reflects a sport "that straddles both the past and the present, with its rich history and cutting-edge technology."
Zimmer built a hybrid score that combines orchestra and electronic music. He pictured the orchestra as "the human that sits inside the machine", while the electronics stood for the machine itself. Conversations with Lewis Hamilton shaped how he understood that relationship. Electronic music also captured the unpredictability of racing. Zimmer noted that with synthesizers "you don't quite know who's going to do what next", and he said the aim was to "score for surprise".
Guitarist Tim Henson, drummer Marco Minnemann and members of Zimmer's touring band played on the score. The film marks Zimmer's 13th collaboration with Bruckheimer, a partnership that began with Days of Thunder (1990). A recurring motif for Sonny Hayes sits at the center, which Zimmer called a "gunslinger motif". Zimmer and Mazzaro paid close attention to how the score interacts with the sound design and the visuals.
The soundtrack, F1 the Album, was released the same day as the film's North American debut. Don Toliver and Doja Cat put out the lead single "Lose My Mind" on the 30th of April 2025. Rosé's "Messy" followed on the 8th of May, Myke Towers's "Baja California" on the 23rd of May and Tate McRae's "Just Keep Watching" on the 30th of May. Other promotional singles came from Dom Dolla, Chris Stapleton, Tiësto with Sexyy Red, and Roddy Ricch. Ed Sheeran's "Drive" arrived on the 20th of June 2025, a week before the American release.
Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference on the 9th of June 2025 opened with a joke built around the film. Craig Federighi sat at the wheel of the APXGP car, complete with Apple CarPlay, and drove across the roof of Apple Park as if running a solo Grand Prix. Tim Cook played his race director. Two days later, on the 11th of June, Apple released a "haptic trailer". Played on the Apple TV app, it made the Taptic Engine on supported iPhones pulse in sync with the on-screen action.
The second official trailer premiered ahead of the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, and a television spot aired during Super Bowl LIX. Sponsorships from brands in the film brought in at least $40 million, according to Forbes estimates. Expensify, GEICO, SharkNinja, MSC Cruises and EA Sports appeared on the APXGP cars and clothing as team sponsors. Peak and GEICO backed the fictional Chip Hart Racing team in the Daytona scenes.
IWC Schaffhausen released watches themed on APXGP's black and gold colors, and Tommy Hilfiger launched a clothing line. Mercedes-AMG revealed a limited APXGP-edition Mercedes-AMG GT 63. The F1 25 game by EA Sports added the film's livery along with scenarios players can attempt. Heineken 0.0 released a commercial that featured Pitt and Idris as F1 drivers. Hot Wheels produced a 1:64-scale die-cast model of the #7 APXGP car driven by Pitt's character.
The marketing reached real racing too. At the 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans, the #90 Manthey Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R ran a livery similar to the Daytona one. The following weekend, at the Sahlen's Six Hours of The Glen, the same #120 Wright Motorsports Porsche used for filming ran with the film's livery. Drivers, crew and IMSA personnel received a private screening. In certain Latin American countries, McDonald's launched a combo that let customers pay extra for a 1:43-scale APXGP or McDonald's-liveried Bburago model car. Some outlets in São Paulo displayed full-size F1 cars.
The cybersecurity firm Kaspersky confirmed that the film's popularity also drew criminals. Scammers built fake live streaming sites and fraudulent toy giveaways tied to a bogus McDonald's-Apple promotion. Their goal was to trick users into sharing personal and financial information.
The world premiere took place on the 16th of June 2025 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, with the cast and the 2025 F1 drivers in attendance. A Qatar Airways flight from Montreal to New York was chartered so that drivers and team principals could attend after the Canadian Grand Prix. The European premiere followed on the 23rd of June at Empire Leicester Square in London. Warner Bros. Pictures and Apple Original Films released the film in the United States on the 27th of June. An early IMAX screening was held on the 23rd of June, and a re-release in IMAX followed on the 8th of August due to popular demand.
The film opened to $146.3 million worldwide and is considered Apple's first box office hit. It was also the first Apple film to top the box office on its opening weekend. In the United States and Canada, industry estimates for the opening weekend centered around $40 million. It debuted to $57 million after $10 million in previews. The second weekend brought $26.1 million, a drop of 54%, and the film finished second behind Jurassic World Rebirth. That weekend it passed Napoleon (2023) to become Apple's highest-grossing film.
By early August, F1 had become the highest-grossing Brad Pitt film in history, passing the $540 million theatrical run of World War Z (2013). It finished with $189.6 million in the United States and Canada and $444.4 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $634 million. That made it the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2025 and the highest-grossing auto racing film of all time. In September 2025, Variety reported that the film was expected to make a theatrical profit of around $34 million.
Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "A". Those surveyed by PostTrak gave it a 92% overall positive score, and 78% said they would definitely recommend it. Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter called it "a deft addition to a sturdy lineage of motorsport flicks". Amy Nicholson of The Los Angeles Times found it "muscular and thrilling and zippy", despite "a toy dump truck's worth of plot". Nicholas Barber of the BBC gave it two stars out of five and wrote: "Everyone else: this is not where you want to be."
Motorsport media were divided. Ben Hunt of Autosport called the film "good for non-F1 fans". Fred Smith of Road & Track said hardcore racing fans would wince. Katy Fairman of Motor Sport judged it "comedically unrealistic", while Chris Medland of Racer called the racing footage "spectacular" but criticised the character development. Four-time World Drivers' Champion Max Verstappen skipped the private screening for F1 drivers and the New York premiere. Carlos Sainz Jr. urged "pure F1 fans" to "be open-minded to Hollywood films".
The National Board of Review named F1 one of the top ten films of the year on the 3rd of December 2025. The film earned four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and won Best Sound at the 98th Academy Awards on the 15th of March 2026. It also won Best Sound at the 31st Critics' Choice Awards and the 79th British Academy Film Awards. Editor Stephen Mirrione, cinematographer Claudio Miranda and Zimmer's score appeared among the nominated categories at the Critics' Choice Awards. Variety reported that a sequel was being discussed, and the Financial Times raised the possibility of a franchise. A sequel was officially greenlit in February 2026.
