Stanley Tucci
Stanley Tucci Jr. gave a college classmate a nickname that the man has carried ever since. The classmate was Irving Rhames, and the nickname was Ving. Tucci handed it over while the two of them studied acting together at a state university in New York.
Tucci was born on the 11th of November 1960, and he grew into what the industry calls a character actor. That means he disappears into a wide range of parts instead of playing one fixed type. His work has earned numerous accolades. He has also written, directed, and hosted.
How does a quiet kid from small New York towns become one of the most recognizable supporting faces on screen? Why did a career built on playing other people end up turning on his own appetite? And what did that career cost him along the way?
Peekskill, New York, is where Tucci was born, and Katonah, a short distance away, is where he grew up. His mother, Joan, née Tropiano, worked as a secretary and a writer. His father, Stanley Sr., taught art at Horace Greeley High School in Chappaqua, New York. Both parents were of Italian descent, with distant roots in the town of Marzi, in Calabria, in southern Italy.
Tucci is the oldest of three children. His sister Christine became an actress, and his cousin Joseph Tropiano became a screenwriter. Italy became more than ancestry for Tucci in the early 1970s, when he spent a year living in Florence.
John Jay High School, in Lewisboro, New York, is where his real passion showed. He played on the soccer and baseball teams, but the drama club held his attention. There he and a friend, the actor Campbell Scott, drew good notices in many school productions. Scott was the son of the actors George C. Scott and Colleen Dewhurst.
After school, Tucci enrolled at the State University of New York at Purchase and majored in acting. He graduated in 1982. His friendship with Campbell Scott, and in particular with Scott's mother, paid off in that same year.
Colleen Dewhurst was co-starring in a Broadway play called The Queen and the Rebels, which premiered on the 30th of September 1982. She arranged for Tucci and her son's friend Campbell Scott to play soldiers in it. Those small parts earned Tucci his Actors' Equity card.
Around then Tucci also worked as a model. His most notable job was a television commercial for Levi's 501 jeans.
His film debut came in 1985, in John Huston's black comedy crime film Prizzi's Honor. Tucci played a soldier, and the stars were Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner. Minor and supporting parts followed. They included the psychological horror film Monkey Shines in 1988, and in 1989 the comedy-drama Slaves of New York and the comedy Fear, Anxiety & Depression.
In 1991 he played the mobster Lucky Luciano in Billy Bathgate, which starred Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman. That same year he performed the role of Scapino at the Yale Repertory Theatre, in Molière's Scapin.
Two films arrived in 1992, the family comedy Beethoven and the romantic fantasy Prelude to a Kiss. Beethoven succeeded enough to spawn a franchise of the same name. He then appeared in The Pelican Brief in 1993, with Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts. In 1994 came It Could Happen to You, with Nicolas Cage and Bridget Fonda.
Television gave him a real showcase in 1995, in the series Murder One, where he played the mysterious Richard Cross. The role brought his first Primetime Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. Ratings disappointed, however. ABC decided to revamp the show, and the change cost Tucci his place in it. His next project would be one he built himself, alongside his cousin.
Two brothers, an authentic Italian restaurant, and diners who considered spaghetti and meatballs the peak of sophistication: that was the premise of Big Night in 1996. Tucci co-wrote it with his cousin Joseph Tropiano. He co-directed it with his friend Campbell Scott and starred in it opposite Tony Shalhoub.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Tucci and Tropiano won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. It was a family affair as well. Tucci's sister Christine appeared in it, and their mother wrote a cookbook for the production. Minnie Driver, Isabella Rossellini, Ian Holm, and Allison Janney rounded out the cast.
Critic Roger Ebert praised the film and suggested it was a long-overdue break for Tucci, who had been in good movies but not enough of them. Of the finished picture he wrote: "Their perfect risotto. They include just what is needed and nothing else."
Two years later, Tucci wrote, directed, co-produced, and starred in The Impostors. Oliver Platt co-starred, and the pair played struggling comedians of the 1930s who resembled Laurel and Hardy. The film premiered at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival and drew positive reviews.
In 2000 he directed, produced, and starred in Joe Gould's Secret. It was based on a 1964 biographical essay about Gould by Joseph Mitchell, a reporter for The New Yorker.
The stage called him back as a director in 2010, when he staged a Broadway revival of Ken Ludwig's play Lend Me a Tenor. It starred Tony Shalhoub, his partner from Big Night. In 2017 he wrote and directed the drama Final Portrait.
Between those directing efforts, though, a columnist named Walter Winchell was waiting for Tucci at HBO.
Walter Winchell, the columnist Tucci played in the 1998 HBO film Winchell, earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. He also won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film. The Screen Actors Guild nominated him as well.
In 2001 he played Adolf Eichmann in the HBO war film Conspiracy, alongside Kenneth Branagh and Colin Firth. The role brought him another Golden Globe in the same category. The film was critically acclaimed and won a Peabody Award.
A revival of Terrence McNally's Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune brought Tucci back to Broadway in 2002. It earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. That year he also appeared opposite Tom Hanks in Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition. The film grossed $181 million and received six Academy Award nominations. He reunited with Hanks in Steven Spielberg's The Terminal in 2004.
Stanley Kubrick was another real figure he took on in 2004, in the HBO film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers.
The Lovely Bones, in 2009, sent him somewhere much darker. Peter Jackson's adaptation of Alice Sebold's novel cast him as George Harvey, a serial killer of young girls, opposite Saoirse Ronan. To prepare, Tucci consulted the retired FBI profiler John Douglas. The performance earned him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actor.
Spotlight, in 2015, gave him a very different kind of figure to play. Tucci portrayed Mitchell Garabedian, a lawyer representing victims of sexual abuse. Tom McCarthy directed, and the cast included Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, John Slattery, and Liev Schreiber. The film won the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
In 2017 the miniseries Feud: Bette & Joan cast him as the Warner Bros. studio head Jack L. Warner. It brought him a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie.
Quieter dramas followed. Supernova, released in 2020, paired Tucci with Colin Firth as a couple facing one partner's early onset dementia. It premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Variety's Guy Lodge wrote that these two reliable stalwarts bring out something lovely and surprising in each other.
In 2022 Tucci took the title role in the BBC One thriller Inside Man, created by Steven Moffat and also starring David Tennant. He was also cast, in September, as the Grammy-winning producer Clive Davis in the Whitney Houston biopic Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
In 2024 he played a major role in Edward Berger's Conclave, alongside Ralph Fiennes. The film premiered at the 51st Telluride Film Festival.
Nigel Kipling, the loyal confidant of Miranda Priestly, turned The Devil Wears Prada into a breakout for Tucci in 2006. Meryl Streep played Priestly, with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt also in the cast. A.O. Scott of The New York Times wrote that Tucci had never been better. It remained his highest-grossing film until Captain America: The First Avenger in 2011.
Streep and Tucci reunited in 2009 in Nora Ephron's biographical comedy Julie & Julia. Tucci played Paul Child, the husband of Julia Child, whom Streep portrayed. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote that the pair were "magical together" and that their portrait of an unconventional marriage deserved its own movie.
Easy A, in 2010, cast Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as the easygoing, funny parents of Emma Stone's character. That same year he appeared in Burlesque, alongside Cher and Christina Aguilera. In 2011 he played Dr. Abraham Erskine in Captain America: The First Avenger, opposite Chris Evans.
Margin Call, also in 2011, gave him the role of Eric Dale. J.C. Chandor directed, and the cast included Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, and Zachary Quinto. It premiered at Sundance to critical acclaim and later earned a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
From 2012 to 2015, Tucci played the television host Caesar Flickerman across four Hunger Games films. In 2013 he played the Ancient Greek god Dionysus in Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. He joined the Transformers series as the CEO Joshua Joyce in Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014, and returned as Merlin in Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017. That same year he played the composer Maestro Cadenza in Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast, with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.
His voice proved just as useful. Robots, in 2005, was his first voice role, in a cast that included Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, and Robin Williams. In 2014 he voiced Leonardo da Vinci in the animated film Mr. Peabody & Sherman. From 2014 to 2020 he had a recurring role as Herb Kazzaz in the animated series BoJack Horseman.
Audiobooks used his voice too. In 2004 Caedmon Audio released his reading of Kurt Vonnegut's 1973 novel Breakfast of Champions. His narration of The One and Only Shrek! earned a Grammy nomination for 2008.
In 2020 Tucci began voicing Bitsy Brandenham in the animated series Central Park. Apple ordered two seasons of 13 episodes each, and the show premiered on the 29th of May 2020.
The fall of 2012 brought Tucci's first cookbook, titled The Tucci Cookbook. He was also a co-owner of the Finch Tavern restaurant in Croton Falls, New York.
Food moved to the center of his public life in 2021, when CNN aired Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. The six-part series followed him on a food tour of Italy. He hosted it in 2021 and 2022 and won two consecutive Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series. Caroline Framke of Variety called him an extraordinarily charming presence who knows and loves Italian food.
On the 21st of May 2021, the American University of Rome awarded Tucci an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters. The university cited his lifelong contribution to the arts and humanities.
Behind the cheerful travel series lay a private ordeal. In September 2021, Tucci revealed that he had been diagnosed with oropharyngeal cancer three years earlier. A tumor had been found at the base of his tongue. He was treated with chemotherapy and radiation, and he said it was unlikely to return. In November 2022 he said some foods were still off the table because of the cancer.
His memoir, Taste: My Life Through Food, was published in October 2021. It describes both his encounter with cancer and his love of food. The book spent 16 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller List, through the 13th of February 2022.
A later book, What I Ate in One Year, appeared in 2024. It won the Non-Fiction: Lifestyle and Illustrated category at the 2025 British Book Awards.
Kathryn Spath, a social worker born in 1962, became Tucci's wife in 1995. She had previously been married to the actor and stage manager Alexander R. Scott, which made her the former sister-in-law of Tucci's friend Campbell Scott. The couple had three children together, and they also raised her two children from her earlier marriage.
In 2002, while appearing on Broadway in Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Tucci had an affair with his co-star Edie Falco. The affair ended, and he returned to his wife and children. Spath died of breast cancer in 2009, at the age of 47.
The premiere of The Devil Wears Prada in 2006 was where Tucci first met Felicity Blunt, born in 1981, a British literary agent with the Curtis Brown Group. They reconnected in 2010 at the wedding of her sister Emily Blunt to the actor John Krasinski. Tucci and Felicity became engaged in 2011 and married in a civil ceremony in the summer of 2012. A larger observance followed at Middle Temple Hall in London on the 29th of September 2012. They have a son and a daughter.
On the 12th of September 2016, Tucci joined other celebrities in a video for the United Nations refugee agency UNHCR. The video, titled What They Took With Them, has the actors reading a poem by Jenifer Toksvig, inspired by primary accounts of refugees. It belongs to UNHCR's #WithRefugees campaign, which also includes a petition asking governments to expand asylum.
In May 2026 Tucci returned as Nigel Kipling in The Devil Wears Prada 2, the sequel to the film at whose premiere he first met his wife.
