2011 NFL season

  • On the 8th of September 2011, the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers kicked off what would become one of the most statistically extraordinary seasons in NFL history at Lambeau Field. The opponent was the New Orleans Saints, and the two teams combined for 76 points in a single kickoff game, setting an all-time record. What no one in that stadium yet knew was that the season that had almost never happened would rewrite the record books from the very first snap.

The 2011 NFL season was the 92nd regular season of the National Football League and the 46th of the Super Bowl era. It had begun under a cloud of legal and financial uncertainty, with owners and players locked in a bitter dispute that lasted 130 days. Three of the nine highest single-season passing yardage totals in NFL history were set before the year was done. And it ended on the 5th of February 2012, in Indianapolis, with a rematch between two familiar championship rivals coming down to a final four points.

  • The roots of the 2011 labor crisis stretched back to May 2008, when NFL team owners chose to opt out of the 1993 labor arrangement. The two sides entered 2010 without a new agreement in place, and by March 2011 they had run out of time.

The National Football League Players Association renounced its collective bargaining rights, and three of the most prominent quarterbacks in the game took legal action. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Drew Brees joined seven other players in filing an antitrust suit aimed at stopping the lockout from taking hold. The legal move put the dispute squarely in front of the courts.

The lockout officially began on March 11 and did not end until July 25, spanning 130 days. The one game that did not survive was the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on August 7, a preseason contest that would have featured the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Rams in only the second time since 1971 the game involved two teams from the same conference.

The settlement of the Brady et al. v. NFL antitrust suit on July 25 opened the door. A majority of players signed union authorization cards within days. The NFL officially recognized the NFLPA as the players' collective bargaining representative on July 30, and players ratified a new agreement on August 4. That agreement was built to last through 2021.

  • Drew Brees threw for 5,476 yards in 2011, the most passing yards ever recorded by a single player in one NFL season at that time. Tom Brady finished second all-time at 5,235, and Matthew Stafford claimed ninth place at 5,038. Eli Manning added 4,933 yards, placing him 14th on the all-time list. All of this happened in a single season.

Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers set the all-time single-season quarterback rating record at 122.5. He threw at least two touchdown passes in 13 consecutive games, another single-season record. For the second consecutive year, the league as a whole set a record for average passing yards per team per game, reaching 229.7 yards, more than eight yards above the 2010 figure.

Brees also set records for most completions in a season with 472, highest completion percentage for a team at 71.3 percent, most first downs passing at 280, and most 300-yard passing games in a single season with 13. His Saints offense finished with 7,474 net offensive yards, the most in a single season at that point.

Rob Gronkowski of New England set a record for most receiving yards by a tight end in a single season with 1,327 yards, breaking a mark that Jimmy Graham of New Orleans had set just weeks earlier with 1,310. Cam Newton, in his first season with Carolina, threw for 4,051 yards as a rookie, the most ever by a first-year quarterback.

  • Stanford senior quarterback Andrew Luck was widely regarded as the best quarterback prospect the draft had seen in years. This created an unusual dynamic among fan bases whose teams were struggling in 2011.

Fans of the Indianapolis Colts, whose season had gone badly wrong, openly called for their team to lose games deliberately in a bid to earn the top pick in the 2012 draft. The phrase "Suck for Luck" spread across the league as a darkly comic expression of fan frustration. The Colts, normally a playoff contender, found themselves at the center of a draft competition played out in losses rather than wins.

The 2011 NFL Draft itself had already taken place before the regular season began. Held from April 28 to 30 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, it opened with the Carolina Panthers selecting Cam Newton from Auburn with the first overall pick. Newton went on to win the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year award, throwing for those record 4,051 yards while also setting the single-season record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 14.

  • David Akers of the San Francisco 49ers set the single-season field goals made record with 44, along with the record for most points in a season without a touchdown at 166. Kickers across the league were also historically accurate from long range, as the total of field goals made from 50 or more yards reached 90, with a success rate of 63.8 percent.

Patrick Peterson of the Arizona Cardinals returned four punts for touchdowns, tying the single-season record. His 99-yard game-winning punt return touchdown in overtime against St. Louis on November 6 was the longest such play in overtime history. Randall Cobb of Green Bay took a kickoff 108 yards for a score in the season opener against New Orleans, tying the record for the longest kick return.

Sebastian Janikowski of Oakland tied the record for the longest field goal in league history with a 63-yarder against Denver on September 12. He also kicked three field goals of 50 or more yards in a single game, twice, tying a record both times. San Francisco's Andy Lee posted the highest net punting average for a season at 43.99 yards. Jared Allen of Minnesota recorded 22 sacks to lead the league.

Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos beat Pittsburgh in the Wild Card round on January 8 with a game-winning pass to Demaryius Thomas that covered 80 yards. The drive lasted 11 seconds, the shortest drive in overtime history in both the regular and postseason.

  • The first Sunday of the 2011 regular season fell on September 11, the tenth anniversary of the attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. The NFL scheduled the New York Giants to visit the Washington Redskins that day, as both cities had been targeted a decade earlier. Players, coaches, game officials, and sideline personnel all wore a stars-and-stripes ribbon patch bearing the dates "9/11/01" and "9/11/11." Players were permitted to wear special red, white, and blue gloves and shoes.

The New England Patriots wore a patch bearing the initials "MHK" all season in honor of Myra Kraft, the wife of team owner Robert Kraft, who died of cancer in July. The Oakland Raiders placed stickers reading "AL" on their helmets after owner Al Davis died at his home in Oakland, California on October 8 at the age of 82.

The 2011 season was the last in which Reebok exclusively supplied uniforms to all 32 teams, ending a 10-year arrangement. Nike and New Era took over a 40-year contract, with Nike handling on-field uniforms and performance apparel, and New Era supplying on-field caps. The Buffalo Bills unveiled redesigned uniforms on June 24, the first redesign since 2002, drawing on the look the team wore between 1975 and 1983.

  • The New York Giants entered Super Bowl XLVI with the most playoff appearances in league history at 31 and the most league championship game appearances at 19. Their opponent was the New England Patriots, who were appearing in their fifth Super Bowl with Tom Brady as quarterback.

The game was played on the 5th of February 2012, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Eli Manning threw for more yards in a single postseason than any quarterback before him, finishing with 1,219 yards over the playoff run, and set completions records for Super Bowl opening drives. The Giants won 21-17.

The Patriots suffered their fourth Super Bowl loss, tying a record for most Super Bowls lost. Tom Brady tied another record with 16 playoff wins as a starting quarterback. The day before the game, on February 4, the first-ever NFL Honors awards show was held at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis. Aaron Rodgers was named the AP Most Valuable Player, Cam Newton took AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, and Jim Harbaugh of San Francisco earned AP Coach of the Year in his first season with the 49ers. Eli Manning was named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player.
