Jamie Campbell Bower

  • Jamie Campbell Bower once needed up to eight hours of make-up work in a single day to become Vecna, the monstrous villain of the Netflix series Stranger Things. The man beneath the prosthetics is an English actor, singer, and guitarist. He has also sung in bands, worked as a model, and talked candidly in public about his own recovery. This documentary asks how he reached that role and what came before it. It asks what music has meant to him alongside acting. And it asks what he has said, in his own words, about the hardest years of his life.

  • James Metcalfe Campbell Bower was born in London on the 22nd of November 1988. His mother, Anne Elizabeth Roseberry, is a music manager. His father, David Bower, works for the Gibson Guitar Corporation. Music was part of his family's working world from the start.

On his mother's side, Bower is the great-great-great-great-grandson of Sir John Campbell of Airds. Campbell was a Scottish lawyer who lived from 1807 to 1853 and served as Lieutenant Governor of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. A younger brother, Samuel, was born in 1994 and later played alongside him in the band Counterfeit.

As a child, Bower began learning the violin through the Suzuki method. He attended Bedales School, a co-educational independent school in Steep, Hampshire. He also belonged to London's National Youth Music Theatre and to the National Youth Theatre.

His stage credits begin early. The list includes Honk! at the Royal National Theatre in 1999 and The Dreaming in 2001. The step into professional screen work, though, came through a friend's recommendation.

  • Laura Michelle Kelly, a friend of Bower's, recommended him to her agent, and that introduction launched his professional career. In 2007 he co-starred as Anthony Hope in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The following year he played Rocker in RocknRolla and Jack in Winter in Wartime.

In 2009 he starred as Number 11-12 in a remake of the series The Prisoner. That same year he joined The Twilight Saga as the vampire Caius Volturi. He appeared in New Moon and in both Breaking Dawn films.

The year 2010 brought a different kind of villain. Bower played the young Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1. Grindelwald is the dark wizard later defeated by Albus Dumbledore. Bower returned to the character in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018.

On the set of that Harry Potter film he met the actress Bonnie Wright. They were confirmed as a couple in February 2010 and announced their engagement in April 2011. In June 2012 they said they had split amicably.

In 2011 Bower played King Arthur in the television series Camelot and the young Earl of Oxford in the film Anonymous. In 2013 he played Jace Wayland in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, based on Cassandra Clare's book series. Awards listings place him in the One to Watch: Brits Going Global category at the 2011 National Movie Awards for Anonymous. They also list him for Choice Movie Actor: Action at the 2014 Teen Choice Awards, for the Mortal Instruments film.

  • In 2010 Bower appeared as a fan in the music video for "Young (Belane)" by The Xcerts. In 2012 he played the love interest in Florence + The Machine's video for "Never Let Me Go". Both clips show a performer already moving between screen and music.

In June 2015 he took the role of Joe in the West End musical Bend It Like Beckham at the Phoenix Theatre in London. That same year he began voicing Skiff in the Thomas & Friends franchise. The work covers the television show, two home videos, and the feature film Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure.

In July 2017 Bower joined the TNT series Will as the playwright Christopher Marlowe. The series presents Marlowe as a gay poet, atheist, and spy who is jealous of Shakespeare. This Marlowe is preoccupied with death, the supernatural, and the occult. Bower said the series delves into the poet's life, and he called Marlowe a naughty boy.

In January 2019 Bower was announced as a lead in Bloodmoon, a prequel to Game of Thrones. HBO later decided not to pick the series up. The same year he starred in the film Six Days of Sistine, distributed by Mbur Indie Film Distributor, opposite Elarica Johnson.

He also played Mick Jagger in an episode of Urban Myths titled "Mick Jagger and Princess Margaret". In 2024 he appeared as Caleb Sykes in Horizon: An American Saga. His filmography further lists a main role in the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

  • In 2022 the fourth season of Stranger Things brought Bower to a far larger audience as Henry Creel, who is also Vecna. He returned for the fifth season in 2025. Critics praised his performance, and it became the role for which he is most widely known.

His preparation drew on heavy music. In a 2022 interview he cited black metal artists including Sunn O))), Mayhem, Darkthrone, and Carpathian Forest. Another inspiration was the Placebo cover of Kate Bush's song "Running Up That Hill". Kate Bush's original plays a large part in the storylines of the seasons in which he appears.

Awards bodies noticed the work. In 2023 he was listed at the Critics' Choice Super Awards for Best Villain in a Series. At the MTV Movie & TV Awards he was listed for Best Villain and, with Millie Bobby Brown, for Best Fight.

The character followed him into other formats. In 2024 Bower voiced Vecna and Henry Creel in the video game Stranger Things VR. In December 2025 he reprised the role in a surprise appearance in the final scene of the play Stranger Things: The First Shadow at the Marquis Theatre in New York. That cameo marked his Broadway debut.

  • Bower's first band was William K, in which he played drums. He then became lead singer of The Darling Buds, a group that never released an album and dissolved in June 2015. Later that year he became lead singer and guitarist of the punk rock band Counterfeit.

Counterfeit released its first album in March 2017 and toured the United States that year. In November 2020 Bower announced the split through the band's Instagram page. A second album had been recorded but was never released. He said the breakup left him feeling sadness and grief.

Solo music followed quickly. "Paralysed" came out on the 2nd of December 2020, and "Crow" arrived on the 14th of April 2022. Bower said he likes writing country songs because of their structure. He also described a habit from his earliest singing, saying it was "harder for me to sing wholly in a British accent than to just wail away and drop my Ts". He would like to build a musical project inspired by the Divine Comedy, especially Dante's Inferno. His voice is a baritone.

His influences span decades. In a 2019 interview he named Placebo, Deftones, Blur, Oasis, and Marilyn Manson. In 2022 he called The Cure his greatest inspiration during his solo career, especially their album Pornography.

On the 1st of April 2024, Bower announced a new band called BloodMagic. He deleted all his photos from Instagram and opened a new account named after the band, featuring the drummer Kyle Adams. On the 19th of March 2026 he released a solo music video for "Waiting for Your Love".

  • At the start of his acting career, Bower worked part-time as a model with Select Model Management in London. In December 2013 he joined the cast of Burberry's Campaign Stars for spring and summer 2014. In 2016 he posed for Dolce & Gabbana.

In 2017 he appeared in Hugo Boss's fall and winter campaign. In 2018 he modelled for Fendi. He also took part in a photoshoot for Flaunt Magazine with the model Erika Linder.

During Milan Fashion Week in February 2024, Bower walked the runway for Tom Ford. In September 2025 he modelled for Cartier and Ann Demeulemeester. Later in 2025 he posed for a Hugo Boss campaign made in collaboration with Formula One. He is also a testimonial for Saint Laurent.

  • In a December 2007 interview, Bower revealed that he has mild dyslexia. Years later he began speaking about far heavier struggles, including alcoholism and mental health problems. In September 2019 he described the first lesson of recovery as being "super honest about what it is that you're feeling". Counterfeit also released a song on the subject, called "It Gets Better".

In July 2022 Bower wrote on Twitter that he had been in active addiction more than twelve years earlier. He said it grew so bad that he ended up in a hospital for mental health. He wrote, "I am now 7 1/2 years clean and sober." He closed with the line, "Remember, we are all works in progress." Mental health organizations including Turning Point and High Watch Recovery Center praised him for it.

In September 2022 Bower said he grew up with anxiety and used alcohol to ease his fears and insecurities. He described a "spiritual malady" during his addiction. He said he never would have thought of detoxing at the age of 27. Two months later he told the Italian newspaper la Repubblica that "healing begins just when you realize that nothing can be controlled, and you start to let go."

His romantic life has also been public. From 2012 to 2018 he was in an on-off relationship with the English-American actress Lily Collins. In 2025 he began dating the social media personality Elena Taber. Bower now divides his time between London and Los Angeles.
