Tyler, the Creator

8 sections
  • At the age of seven, Tyler Gregory Okonma, known professionally as Tyler, the Creator, was already making albums that did not exist. He pulled the covers out of CD cases and made new ones for imaginary records, each with a tracklist and song lengths. He had no way to record the music yet. Years later, the American rapper and producer has turned that childhood game into a career that stretches from horror-tinged rap to dance music. His path raises questions that the rest of this documentary will answer. How did a boy removed from drama class and turned away from band become the leader of a rowdy collective? Why did the United Kingdom bar him from entering? And what made him walk away from the dark sound that first made him famous?

  • Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on the 6th of March 1991 in Hawthorne, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. His father is a Nigerian Igbo, and his mother is African-American, half-Canadian and multiracial. He stayed in Hawthorne until he moved to Ladera Heights at 17.

Twelve years of schooling took him through twelve different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. In the eighth grade he joined a drama class and was removed for being too hyperactive. In the ninth grade, the band class refused him because he could not read music. At 14 he taught himself to play the piano anyway. At Westchester High School he befriended Lionel Boyce in a theater class.

Work did not hold him for long either. He lasted under two weeks at FedEx, but he stayed at Starbucks for over two years.

The internet gave him a stage that classrooms never did. At 15 he ran a YouTube channel called bloxhead, and its first video went up on the 28th of February 2008. The channel was first named for a comedy hip-hop duo he formed with Jasper Dolphin. His stage name came from a Myspace page where he posted his creative projects. He kept uploading until October 2009, when he stopped to work on an album.

  • Odd Future began in 2007, when Tyler co-founded the collective with Hodgy, Left Brain and Casey Veggies. The group self-released The Odd Future Tape in November 2008. Inside the group Tyler rapped, produced, directed and acted, and he produced studio albums for its other members.

On the 25th of December 2009 he self-released Bastard, his first solo album. Pitchfork Media later ranked it 32nd on its list of the top albums of 2010. The real jolt came on the 11th of February 2011, when he released the music video for Yonkers. Online outlets noticed it quickly, and an extended version with a third verse appeared on iTunes. Kanye West posted it on Twitter and called it "the video of 2011". The song also won Tyler Best New Artist at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards.

Record executives and stars began to circle. Steve Rifkind, Jimmy Iovine, Rick Ross and Jay-Z were among the figures showing interest in early 2011. In April, Tyler and the rest of Odd Future signed with Red Distribution and Sony. Goblin, his second studio album, followed on the 10th of May 2011.

Television arrived just as fast. On the 16th of February 2011, Tyler and Hodgy Beats made their television debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, performing Sandwitches. A month later they played the 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards, where other members of the group joined them.

Bastard and Goblin led fans and publications to file Tyler under horrorcore. He vehemently rejected the connection.

The group soon had a show of its own. Loiter Squad was confirmed as a 15-minute live-action program of sketches, man-on-the-street segments, pranks and music. Dickhouse Productions, the partnership behind Jackass, was set to produce it. It premiered on Adult Swim on the 25th of March 2012 and ran for three seasons, with guests including Johnny Knoxville, Lil Wayne and Seth Rogen. In 2015 Tyler said the show "is no more".

  • "I just like to piss off old white dudes." That was Tyler's answer when asked why his early lyrics were so offensive, and he added that they "are not offensive". The dark tone of Bastard and Goblin drew on Eminem, especially Eminem's 2009 album Relapse, which Tyler has named as a favorite. Online music communities attacked the nihilistic mood, citing lyrics about rape and murder. The Yonkers video, in which Tyler eats a cockroach, stirred controversy in the media as well.

Between 2010 and 2011, Tyler also sent a series of sexually explicit comments to Selena Gomez over Twitter. In a 2013 interview he said the two did not get along. In 2021 he made a public apology in the song Manifesto, on Call Me If You Get Lost.

The law caught up with him more than once. In 2011 he was arrested on suspicion of vandalism after allegedly destroying equipment at The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. A fan's video showed him throwing a microphone at a sound engineer, and he paid $8,000 in damages. In 2014 he was arrested in Austin, Texas, for inciting a riot after telling fans at South by Southwest to push past security guards. He faced up to a year in prison and a $4,000 fine. His lawyer, Perry Minton, called the charge overblown, and the charges were later dropped.

The Cherry Bomb World Tour of 2015 met official resistance abroad. Tyler cancelled the Australian leg after the grassroots group Collective Shout campaigned to keep him out. The group argued that his music promotes and glorifies violence against women.

On the 26th of August 2015, Tyler revealed that he had been banned from the United Kingdom for three to five years. The ban forced him to cancel tour dates, including the Reading and Leeds Festivals. His manager, Christian Clancy, said a letter from then Home Secretary Theresa May delivered the news. She cited lyrics from Bastard, although Tyler had toured the UK several times since its release. Tyler said he felt treated "like a terrorist". He implied the ban was racially motivated, saying "they did not like the fact that their children were idolizing a black man."

The ban is believed to have ended in February 2019, around a scheduled London show for Igor. Police forcibly cancelled that show, citing safety concerns that the venue was overcrowded and too rowdy. At the 2020 Brit Awards, Tyler won International Male Solo Artist and used his speech to thank the woman who had kept him out five years earlier. He ended with, "Thank you, Theresa May."

  • In early 2011, Tyler told fans on Formspring that his third album would be called Wolf and would arrive in May 2012. It slipped. On the 14th of February 2013, an Odd Future video of Lionel Boyce's nickname L-Boy skydiving set a new date, the 2nd of April 2013. The same day, Tyler revealed three album covers on Instagram.

Wolf debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 90,000 copies sold in its first week. Tyler produced every track himself except the last, Lone. The guests included Frank Ocean, Pharrell, Erykah Badu and Earl Sweatshirt. Critics heard a turn toward melodic, accessible sounds, blending jazz, R&B and soul. Tyler also looked inward, rapping about his father's abandonment in the song Answer.

Pharrell Williams was no accident on that guest list. Tyler credits Pharrell's work with N.E.R.D and The Neptunes in the 2000s as his greatest inspiration.

Cherry Bomb broke the pattern. Tyler released the music video for one of its songs on the 9th of April 2015, and the album followed digitally on the 13th. Physical copies arrived on the 28th of April with five different covers. Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Schoolboy Q appeared on it. At Coachella, where the tour opened, Tyler scolded the VIP section for lacking enthusiasm, even though many of them were celebrities.

Fans and critics gave the record a mixed reception. Tyler had set out to make only songs, with no thread linking them, and the sound was aggressive and noisy. The Medium later argued that it paved the way for Flower Boy and Igor. Around this time, Tyler stepped away indefinitely from his duties with Odd Future and signed with Columbia Records.

Flower Boy came out on the 21st of July 2017 and drew rave reviews. Its lyrics, including "I been kissing white boys since 2004", prompted speculation that Tyler was coming out. In a 2018 interview with Fantastic Man he said, "Even though I'm considered loud and out there, I'm private, which is a weird dichotomy." The album earned a Best Rap Album nomination at the 60th Grammy Awards, his second nomination after his contribution to Channel Orange. Kendrick Lamar's Damn took the prize that year.

  • On the 6th of May 2019, Tyler posted two short video clips of himself dancing erratically in a long blonde wig, a multicolored suit, black sunglasses and a grill. Eleven days later, on the 17th of May, Igor arrived. Tyler kept the costume for the singles and the music videos. The album was a concept record about being the odd man out in a love triangle, and many listeners read it as the story of a romance with a closeted bisexual man. It became his first number-one album in the United States, and its song Earfquake peaked at number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Igor's chart win set off a feud. DJ Khaled, whose album Father of Asahd it had outsold, posted an Instagram video mocking "mysterious" music that nobody hears on the radio. He later deleted it. In 2021 on Hot 97, Tyler said he enjoyed watching a man "die inside because the weirdo is winning". After his 2022 Grammy win he tweeted "MYSTERIOUS MUSIC! HA!" By November 2023, Rolling Stone reported that DJ Khaled wanted to collaborate with him.

On the 26th of January 2020, Igor won Tyler his first Grammy, for Best Rap Album. He said he was "very grateful", yet called the rap label a "backhanded compliment". He objected that artists who look like him get sorted into rap or urban categories whenever they do something genre-bending. He said he wanted to be recognized at a more mainstream level.

For Call Me If You Get Lost, Tyler put billboards in major cities worldwide showing a phone number. Callers heard a recorded conversation between Tyler and his mother, which the album later included as Momma Talk. The lead single, Lumberjack, came out on the 16th of June 2021, and the album followed on the 25th of June. The record centers on a persona named Tyler Baudelaire, a suave, well-traveled gentleman with a taste for high art. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and won Best Rap Album at the 64th Grammy Awards.

On the 27th of March 2023, Tyler announced Call Me If You Get Lost: The Estate Sale, a set of songs cut from the album. He wrote on Twitter that it was the first album he made with a lot of songs that did not make the final cut. It was released on the 31st of March 2023.

The honors piled up. The Wall Street Journal named him Music Innovator of the Year in 2019. Accepting the Cultural Influence Award at the BET Awards, he thanked Q-Tip, Andre 3000, Chad Hugo, Kanye West, Missy Elliott, Busta Rhymes and Hype Williams as his influences.

  • Wolf Haley is the name on every music video and promotional clip Tyler has directed in his career. His credits as director begin with the 2010 video for Bastard, which he co-directed with Taco Bennett, and run through the 2025 videos for Sticky and Sugar on My Tongue. When he directed Come On, Let's Go in 2022, he was credited as Tyler Okonma.

Clothing was the next canvas. Golf Wang became his streetwear brand, known for a striking, colorful look, and he has collaborated with Lacoste, Converse and Louis Vuitton. His high-end line, Golf le Fleur, is described as embodying the globe-trotting scenes of Call Me If You Get Lost.

Louis Vuitton's Men's Fall-Winter 2022 show at the Carreau du Temple in Paris was one of the last assembled by the late creative director Virgil Abloh. Tyler scored it. Arthur Verocai arranged the music, and Gustavo Dudamel conducted the live performance by the Chineke! Orchestra.

Since 2012, Tyler has also run the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, an annual music festival. Kanye West, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish have all appeared there.

Television gave him more outlets. In 2017 he wrote, produced and performed the theme song for Bill Nye Saves the World. His own show Nuts + Bolts premiered on Viceland on the 3rd of August 2017, explaining how things he finds interesting are made. He announced The Jellies! on the 14th of September 2017, and it premiered on the 22nd of October 2017. He has also voiced Jesus Christ on Big Mouth and provided additional voices in Grand Theft Auto V.

Odd Future's do-it-yourself approach left a mark on hip-hop. The group posted music whenever it wanted, through YouTube, Tumblr and Myspace, and inspired other artists to build careers outside the usual routes. Media comparisons to the Wu-Tang Clan annoyed Tyler, who answered, "we are in a completely different thing". Frank Ocean and Earl Sweatshirt went on to successful careers, and The Internet, led by Syd and Steve Lacy, emerged from the same circle.

Tyler has skateboarded since 2002 and collects BMX bicycles, and he became a familiar sight riding around Los Angeles. He has asthma and has been seen using an inhaler on stage, which is why he follows a straight edge lifestyle.

  • On the 13th of April 2024, Tyler closed out the Saturday night of Coachella as a headliner. He began by bursting through the wall of a fake trailer amid pyrotechnics. Childish Gambino, ASAP Rocky and Kali Uchis joined him, and Charlie Wilson sang a duet of Earfquake with him. Critics called the show an "exhilarating, high-stakes spectacle" and a "brilliant reminder of a cult hero's power".

On the 16th of October 2024, a teaser video titled St. Chroma revealed the name of his next album, Chromakopia. The single Noid arrived on the 21st of October, and the album was released on the 28th. It debuted at number one in the United States and produced the highest first-week sales of his career. He performed it at smaller venues and in public, then at the tenth Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival on the 16th of November. A world tour, his seventh headlining concert tour, began on the 4th of February 2025 in Saint Paul and was set to end on the 21st of September 2025 in Quezon City. Lil Yachty and Paris Texas were its supporting acts.

Tyler quietly started his ninth album, Don't Tap the Glass, in January 2025 while on that tour. On the 18th of July he put up an art installation outside a concert venue. The next day a website appeared, and merchandise for the album briefly replaced the Golf Wang products. On the eve of release, he held a listening party for 300 guests at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with phones and cameras banned. The album came out on the 21st of July through Columbia Records, and critics described it as a dance, techno and house record. Tyler said it grew from the habit of filming concerts, which he blamed for the decline of dancing in public. He urged fans to play it "at full volume" and dance.

The video for Sugar on My Tongue followed on the 12th of August 2025. The song spent seventeen weeks on the Billboard chart, his longest-charting song. That year Tyler also made his feature film debut as Wally in the A24 sports film Marty Supreme, alongside Timothee Chalamet, credited under his birth name. On the 20th of November, Apple Music named him Artist of the Year for 2025.

The 68th Grammy Awards gave him six nominations for Chromakopia and Don't Tap the Glass, including Album of the Year. At the ceremony on the 1st of February, he won in the new Best Album Cover category for Chromakopia. That made his third Grammy, and he performed Thought I Was Dead and Sugar on My Tongue on the main show.
