  • Tom Hiddleston is a British actor who once played Hamlet in a theatre of just 160 seats, with tickets given out by lottery to raise money for RADA, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. The run lasted three weeks in September 2017. Millions of people know him for something else entirely: the scheming god Loki in the Marvel films. How does a Shakespearean trained at Eton, Cambridge and RADA become a blockbuster villain and still return to a tiny stage? And what did the people who worked with him see that made them keep casting him?

  • Thomas William Hiddleston was born on the 9th of February 1981 in the Westminster district of London. His mother, Diana, was an arts administrator and former stage manager from Suffolk. His father, Dr. James Norman Hiddleston, came from Greenock in Scotland. He was a physical chemist and later managing director of a biotechnology company that liaised with Oxford University. Tom has two sisters. Sarah, the elder, works as a journalist in Chennai, India. Emma, the younger, is an actress and a midwife.

A name on the Broomhill war memorial ties the family to Greenock. Hiddleston's great-great-uncle, also called Tom Hiddleston, was a shipyard plater and a member of the Royal Artillery's 51st (Highland) Division. He died after the Battle of the Somme. The actor's paternal grandfather, Alexander, also served in the Royal Artillery and worked as a plater in the shipyards. On his mother's side, the family includes Vice-Admiral Reginald Servaes and the food producer Sir Edmund Vestey.

Hiddleston spent his early years in Wimbledon before the family moved to a village near Oxford. At seven he began boarding at Windlesham House School, and a year later he moved to the Dragon School in Oxford. His parents divorced when he was twelve. At thirteen he started boarding at Eton College.

Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge came next, where he took a double first honours degree in Classics. In his second term, talent agent Lorraine Hamilton of Hamilton Hodell saw him in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in acting.

Television work had already begun while he was still doing student plays. He appeared in ITV's Nicholas Nickleby in 2001 and in the BBC and HBO co-production Conspiracy that year. In 2002 he played Randolph Churchill, son of Winston Churchill, in The Gathering Storm.

His first film role came in Joanna Hogg's first feature, Unrelated, where he played Oakley. Casting director Lucy Bevan, who chose him, said "there was just a fantastic confidence about him". His sister Emma appeared in the same film as Badge.

  • Journey's End in 1999 marked Hiddleston's stage debut. Leading roles with Declan Donnellan's company Cheek by Jowl followed, in Thomas Middleton's The Changeling in 2006 and Shakespeare's Cymbeline in 2007. For Cymbeline he won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer in a Play.

In 2008 he played Cassio in Michael Grandage's Othello at the Donmar Warehouse. His fellow cast members included Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor. The role earned him a second Olivier nomination. That same year he played Lvov in a West End revival of Chekhov's Ivanov alongside Kenneth Branagh.

Branagh later recalled that the first time he saw Hiddleston, as Cassio, it was obvious he was an utterly naturalistic speaker of Shakespeare. That praise carried weight, because Shakespeare became a recurring thread in the younger actor's career.

From December 2013 to February 2014, Hiddleston played the title role in Coriolanus at the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden. Josie Rourke directed. The production was aired live internationally on the 30th of January 2014. David Benedict of Variety praised a "scorching" performance, and the role brought a nomination for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor.

A film role with Branagh as director was only a few years away from the Ivanov run.

  • Kenneth Branagh invited Hiddleston to audition for Thor after working with him on Ivanov and on the BBC detective drama Wallander. Hiddleston went in for the hero, not the villain. He later explained that he was considered because he was tall, blonde and classically trained, and Thor was imagined as a classical character.

He was given six weeks to bulk up. He followed a strict diet and gained twenty pounds of muscle. Branagh then decided he was better suited to the antagonist and cast him as Loki. Hiddleston gave Branagh the credit. "Ken gave me my break," he said.

Empire magazine ranked his Loki as the 19th Greatest Movie Character of All Time. He returned to the part in The Avengers in 2012 and in Thor: The Dark World in 2013. Thor: Ragnarok followed on the 3rd of November 2017, then Avengers: Infinity War in 2018 and Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Endgame grossed over $2 billion worldwide and ranked as the highest-grossing film of all time.

The character then got his own series. Announced in November 2018, Loki premiered on Disney+ in June 2021. In its third episode Hiddleston sings a primarily Norwegian-language song, Very Full, which debuted at number ten on the Billboard World Digital Song Sales chart. The show was renewed for a second season on the 14th of July 2021, and that season premiered in October 2023.

Critics focused on the balance in his performance. Michael Idato of The Sydney Morning Herald wrote that it had always been defined by humour as much as pathos. TVLine named Hiddleston its Performer of the Week after the first season ended. It said he had to bring back a greedier, more insolent Loki while softening him enough, and that he struck that balance beautifully. By the second season he was being called the MCU's most versatile performer.

He also voiced Loki in the animated series What If...? in August 2021. In two Simpsons shorts on Disney+, The Good, the Bart, and the Loki and Welcome to the Club, he voiced the character again.

  • Martin Scorsese said of Archipelago, in which Hiddleston played Edward, "I couldn't stop watching it... I fell in love with it". Joanna Hogg directed the 2010 film, her second feature with the actor.

The year 2011 was crowded. Hiddleston played novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. He was the noble Captain Nicholls in Steven Spielberg's War Horse, based on the 1982 novel by Michael Morpurgo. He also starred as Freddie Page, a RAF pilot, opposite Rachel Weisz in Terence Davies's The Deep Blue Sea. That year he was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award.

On BBC Two in 2012, The Hollow Crown cast him as Prince Hal opposite Jeremy Irons as Henry IV. He later returned in the television film Henry V as the king himself.

The roles grew stranger. Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive in 2013 gave him a vampire to play, opposite Tilda Swinton and Mia Wasikowska. In Guillermo del Toro's gothic horror film Crimson Peak he replaced Benedict Cumberbatch. Filming began in Toronto in February 2014, and the film was released in October 2015. He also played Robert Laing in Ben Wheatley's High-Rise, based on J. G. Ballard's novel.

David Fear of Rolling Stone saw two sides in this work. One is the old-school movie star of Midnight in Paris, War Horse or The Night Manager. The other is an unpredictable, borderline weirdo version, glimpsed in Loki and High-Rise. Fear added that Hiddleston refuses to settle on one kind of role.

In June 2014 it was announced that he would play country singer Hank Williams in I Saw the Light, based on a 1994 biography. Marc Abraham directed. Hiddleston spent nearly five weeks preparing and performed seven of the soundtrack songs himself. The film premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival and reached cinemas on the 25th of March 2016. Critics did not warm to the film, but they praised him. Stephanie Zacharek of Time called him "magnificent".

In the 2016 mini-series The Night Manager, based on John le Carré's novel, he played Jonathan Pine opposite Hugh Laurie. Ben Travers of IndieWire noted that he carried the role from start to finish. The performance brought two Primetime Emmy Award nominations and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor.

Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, opened on the 10th of March 2017. It earned over $566 million worldwide. In 2022 he played Reverend Will Ransome opposite Claire Danes in Apple TV+'s The Essex Serpent. His 2024 film The Life of Chuck, adapted from a Stephen King novella, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on the 6th of September and won the People's Choice Award.

  • In early 2017, Hiddleston said he wanted a long break from work and a return to the stage. His Hamlet that autumn, directed by Branagh, soon drew praise. Michael Billington of The Guardian called it "a compelling Hamlet with a genuine nobility of soul". Ann Treneman of The Times said he made the role "completely his own", and lamented that so few would see what she called his HiddleHamlet.

After the run he was given the Red Book. This is a red-bound copy of Hamlet that once belonged to the stage actor Johnston Forbes-Robertson. It passes from one actor to another, each time to the one judged the greatest Hamlet of their generation.

In 2019 he starred as Robert in a revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal at the Harold Pinter Theatre. Jamie Lloyd directed, and the West End run, from the 5th of March to the 8th of June, sold out. Henry Hitchings of the Evening Standard found him "irresistibly magnetic".

In August the production moved to Broadway for a 17-week limited engagement at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre. This was his Broadway debut. Marilyn Stasio of Variety called the performance "a striking physical, as well as an emotionally complicated one". He received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play.

In 2021 he appeared as special guest star in the 20th anniversary revival of The Play What I Wrote. It played the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Theatre Royal, Bath, and Chichester Festival Theatre.

In 2025 he played Benedick in The Jamie Lloyd Company's Much Ado About Nothing at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The run sold out and set a new box office record for a play in the West End. When it ended in April 2025, it had logged the five highest-grossing weeks for a play in West End history.

  • In 2006 Hiddleston voiced Charles Darwin in the BBC documentary Galápagos. A year later he narrated the audiobook of Sally Gardner's The Red Necklace. In 2011 he read the Ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead aloud, and in 2012 he recorded poetry for iF Poems and The Love Book on iTunes.

In 2015 he was one of the narrators of Shaun Monson's documentary Unity. He voiced the villain in Nick Park's animated film Early Man, released in early 2018.

Nature documentaries later became a steady strand. He narrated Earth At Night In Color, which premiered on Apple TV+ on the 4th of December 2020, with a second season on the 16th of April 2021. In 2023 he narrated Big Beasts, a ten-episode series. In 2024 he followed with Earthsounds, a 12-episode series, also for Apple TV+.

  • Debrett's 2017 list of the most influential people in the United Kingdom included Hiddleston. In 2015 he became the first official founding ambassador of the British Film Institute. Taffy Brodesser-Akner of GQ described his off-screen persona as a sweet-natured bookworm. Guillermo del Toro and Stan Lee both called him "the nicest guy on earth" and "the nicest guy you'll ever meet". Hiddleston has said that method acting does not help him as a collaborator.

In January 2014 he became a spokesperson for Jaguar Cars in its "Good to be Bad" campaign, which put British actors into villain-themed commercials. The first, "Rendezvous", aired during the 2014 Super Bowl with Mark Strong and Ben Kingsley. In April he starred in another, "The Art of Villainy", promoting the F-Type coupe.

He lives in the Belsize Park area of north-west London. His relationship with the British actress and writer Zawe Ashton became public in September 2021, when they appeared together at the Tony Awards. They had performed at a Dickens vs Tolstoy debate for Intelligence Squared in October 2018, then co-starred in Betrayal. They announced their engagement in March 2022 and have two children.

Hiddleston is a UK ambassador for UNICEF. He travelled to Guinea in early 2013 to raise awareness about hunger and malnutrition. He went to South Sudan in early 2015 and again in late 2016 to report on the effects of civil war on children. In February 2018 he was listed as a donor to the Justice and Equality Fund, the UK version of the Time's Up initiative. He is also an ambassador for the Illuminating BAFTA campaign. Other causes he has supported include Comic Relief, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Amnesty International.

He played for the England squad in the Soccer Aid for UNICEF charity match at Old Trafford on the 11th of June 2023. He returned as a player in 2024, when England won. In 2025 he came back as manager of the England squad.
