The Birds (play)
The year was 414 BC when Aristophanes presented The Birds at the City Dionysia festival in Athens. The play secured second place among the competing comedies, a result that surprised many observers given its ambitious scope. This performance occurred during the height of the Sicilian Expedition, an enormous military campaign launched by Athens just one year prior. Alcibiades had championed the expedition with great enthusiasm while Nicias, the city's most experienced general, opposed it from the start. Despite public optimism about the venture, Athenian society was already fracturing over the mutilation of the Hermai statues. Religious extremists led a witch-hunt against rationalist thinkers like Diagoras of Melos following this act of vandalism. A state ship named Salaminia sailed to Sicily to retrieve Alcibiades for trial after he became suspected of involvement in anti-religious activities. He escaped custody before reaching Athens, and authorities offered a reward of one talent of gold for his death. The political atmosphere remained volatile as the war effort continued to drain resources and morale.
Two middle-aged men stumbled across a hillside wilderness guided only by a pet crow and a pet jackdaw. One man advised the audience they were fed up with life in Athens where people argued endlessly over laws. They sought Tereus, a king transformed into a Hoopoe who might help them find a better existence elsewhere. A large fearsome bird emerged from a camouflaged bower demanding to know their purpose and accusing them of being bird-catchers. This creature turned out to be the Hoopoe's servant who returned indoors to fetch his master. Moments later the Hoopoe appeared claiming his lack of feathers resulted from a severe case of moulting. He agreed to discuss their plight while one Athenian proposed that birds should build a great city in the sky. Pisthetaerus suggested this would allow birds to lord it over humans and blockade Olympian gods just as Athens had starved Melos into submission. The Hoopoe liked the idea but required all other birds to agree first. He called to his wife the Nightingale who began her celestial music while an unseen flute swelled through the theatre. Birds from fields mountains trees waterways marshes and seas soon arrived each identified by name on arrival. Four danced together while the rest formed a Chorus. After discovering men presence the newly arrived birds flew into alarm and outrage since mankind was long their enemy. A skirmish followed during which Athenians defended themselves with kitchen utensils found outside the Hoopoe's bower until persuasion finally succeeded. Pisthetaerus delivered a formal speech advising birds they were original gods urging them to regain lost powers from johnny-come-lately Olympians. The birds were completely won over and urged Athenians to lead war against usurping gods. Pisthetaerus introduced himself as Trustyfriend while his companion became Goodhope. They retired to chew a magical root transforming them into bird-like figures. The Nightingale emerged revealing herself as enchantingly feminine presiding over the Chorus of birds. Pisthetaerus named the city-in-the-sky Nephelokokkygia or cloud-cuckoo-land literally meaning sky-cuckoo-city. He ordered his friend to oversee building walls while organizing religious service honoring birds as new gods. During this service unwelcome visitors included a versifier seeking employment as official poet and oracle-monger selling prophecies. A famous geometer named Meton offered town-plans while an imperial inspector eyed quick profits. A statute-seller tried peddling laws originally written for remote Olophyx but Pisthetaeus chased all intruders away. Birds promulgated laws forbidding crimes against their kind such as catching caging stuffing or eating them. They advised festival judges award first place or risk getting defecated on. A messenger reported construction finished thanks to collaborative efforts of numerous bird types. Another messenger announced one Olympian god had snuck through defenses prompting organized hunt. Goddess Iris detected cornered wafted down under guard interrogated insulted allowed fly off complain father Zeus. Delegation from Zeus arrived consisting brother Poseidon oafish Heracles barbarian Triballus god. Pisthetaerus outwitted Heracles who bullied barbarian god submission leaving Poseidon outvoted delegation accepted terms. Proclaimed king by heavenly herald presented Zeus's sceptre Sovereignty vision loveliness festive gathering departed amid wedding march strains Hymen O Hymenai'O! Hymen O Hymenai'O!
