Spider-Man in film
The mainstream Spider-Man films have collectively grossed more than eleven billion dollars worldwide. That total makes the series the second highest-grossing film franchise of all time. Yet Spider-Man in film began far from any cinema, as a teenager drawn on a comic book page in 1962. Writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko invented Peter Parker, a high school student, to draw teenage readers to Marvel Comics. The screen story that followed is full of lawsuits, bankruptcies, rewritten scripts and unlikely partnerships. Why did a hero so well suited to cinema take so long to reach a proper feature? Who actually owned him, and what did it cost to settle the question? And how did one character end up spread across live-action trilogies, animated multiverses and spinoffs that barely feature him at all?
Nicholas Hammond starred as Spider-Man for CBS in 1977, in a television film that doubled as the pilot for a live-action program called The Amazing Spider-Man. The program was a partnership between Marvel and the network. It aired sporadically and lasted only thirteen episodes. In the pilot, the hero races to stop an extortionist who plans to kill a group of civilians with a mind control device.
Two sequels followed, Spider-Man Strikes Back in 1979 and Spider-Man: The Dragon's Challenge in 1981. Neither told a fresh story, because each was stitched together from separate episodes of the series. All three films saw minor distribution in theaters outside the United States.
A very different Spider-Man appeared in Japan in 1978. Toei Company made a theatrical film as part of a four-year licensing deal with Marvel, spun off from a tokusatsu series of the same name. Fans commonly call that series by its Japanese pronunciation, Supaidāman. Its hero is a motorcyclist who wants to avenge his dead father, and his powers come from Garia, the lone survivor of the extinct Spider Planet.
Donald F. Glut made the earliest known Spider-Man fan film in 1969, showing the hero in a fight in a California state park. It was his last amateur film before he turned to acting.
Bruce Cardozo directed Spider-Man Versus Kraven the Hunter in 1974 as a student project at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. The story follows Kraven the Hunter as he tries to kill Spider-Man in a conspiracy devised by Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Stan Lee admired the film's scope and allowed noncommercial screenings. He refused Cardozo's proposals for a theatrical release, because the two men did not share a vision for a feature film. The film has seldom been shown since.
James Krieg's Viva Spider-Man, from 1989, tried to reimagine the first animated television adaptation of the character.
In 1992, Dan Poole adapted the comic storyline known as The Night Gwen Stacy Died as The Green Goblin's Last Stand. He paid the $400 budget with wages from his job as a mail clerk at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. Poole also performed most of the stunts, including a simulated web-slinging sequence recorded in an unoccupied office building.
Some unauthorized Spider-Man appearances came from abroad. The Turkish exploitation film 3 Dev Adam, from 1973, casts the character as the mastermind of a counterfeiting scheme. Dariya Dil followed in 1988.
Amateur filmmaking carried on into the twenty-first century. Italian Spiderman, from 2007, was released in snippets on YouTube and parodies Italian adventure films of the mid-twentieth century, with little resemblance to the American comics.
Spider-Man: Lotus arrived in August 2023, after director Gavin J. Konop crowdfunded $112,000 for it through Indiegogo. Its story was partly shaped by Konop's own struggles as a high school student. Fans derided the result. Leaked texts containing racist comments from Konop and lead actor Warden Wayne then drew widespread media coverage.
The success of Superman in 1978 pushed Marvel to chase feature films in earnest. Several early Spider-Man proposals were dropped, including a musical and another idea that ended in a battle against Nazis and a 100-foot robot.
By 1982, Roger Corman, an experienced producer of low-budget B films, had optioned the rights with Orion Pictures. He worked from a film treatment by Lee, which made Doctor Octopus the main villain and added a subplot about nuclear war with the Soviet Union. The partnership ended when Lee and Corman could not agree on a budget.
In 1985, Cannon Group executives Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus bought the rights for $225,000. A provision would return ownership to Marvel if no film was made within five years. Tobe Hooper and screenwriter Leslie Stevens outlined an origin story in which Spider-Man was a literal spider. Lee was upset and persuaded Cannon to throw the work away. Joseph Zito replaced Hooper as director, and a new script grew from a pitch by Ted Newsom and John Brancato. Cannon spent $2 million on scripts and rewrites, but money troubles and arguments over artistic direction stalled the project.
After Pathé Communications bought Cannon, Golan and Globus split. The rights passed to Golan's 21st Century Film Corporation in a severance package, and then to Carolco Pictures for $5 million in 1988. Carolco hired James Cameron as director and screenwriter, giving him authority over producing credits, much like his contract for Terminator 2: Judgment Day. His scriptment ran about 57 pages and treated Spider-Man as a morally ambiguous character. Carolco extended Cannon's original deal with Marvel to May 1996. Even so, the cost of production rose from $15 million to $50 million, and Carolco abandoned the project by 1992.
In 1993, Golan sued Carolco, claiming it had violated his guaranteed credit as producer in the Cannon-Marvel agreement. Carolco then sued Viacom and Columbia Pictures, a Sony subsidiary, over syndication and home video rights that Golan had sold separately. The two studios countersued, and their suits also disputed Marvel's ownership stakes. 20th Century Fox was not a main party, yet it claimed exclusivity on Cameron's services as a director.
By the mid-1990s, Carolco, 21st Century and Marvel had all filed for bankruptcy. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer bought the 21st Century assets and Carolco's film rights during the proceedings, and it launched another lawsuit alleging fraud in the Cannon-Marvel deal. A report in the Los Angeles Times said legal inquiries found Marvel's licensing agreements overlapped, sometimes on dubious and poorly documented terms.
Marvel emerged from bankruptcy in 1998, and the courts ruled that the rights sold to Golan had expired and returned to the company. Soaring attorney fees helped push the studios to settle the remaining suits over the following year. Marvel and Sony agreed a merchandising joint venture in 1999. It gave Sony and its subsidiary Columbia the rights to produce film, television and sequels for $7 million. MGM dropped its claim to Spider-Man in return for the rights to Casino Royale, released in 2006, and global distribution rights to all later James Bond films. Sony's ownership is perpetual as long as it releases a new Spider-Man film at least once every five years. Columbia now held the rights, a deadline to respect and an empty director's chair.
Tobey Maguire signed in July 2000 to a three-picture, pay-or-play contract worth $3-4 million, with greater pay promised for later films. Director Sam Raimi preferred him because of his performance in The Cider House Rules, from 1999. Columbia had also considered Leonardo DiCaprio, Freddie Prinze Jr., Heath Ledger, Scott Speedman and Wes Bentley.
Maguire's second film brought a crisis. After months of negotiation, he received an upfront salary of $17 million for Spider-Man 2. He then complained of persistent back pain from shooting Seabiscuit, and Columbia fired him, judging his behavior disruptive. The studio reversed course when Ronald Meyer intervened. Meyer was then president of Vivendi Universal and Maguire's father-in-law.
Andrew Garfield joined as Peter Parker in July 2010 on a three-picture deal with a starting salary of $500,000. The reboot called for mostly unknown actors. Director Marc Webb said he was convinced by Garfield's screen test, a cutscene of him eating a burger.
For the Marvel Studios version, some 1,500 actors were scouted. Six auditioned in screen tests opposite Robert Downey Jr. in character as Iron Man / Tony Stark, so producers could judge their onscreen chemistry. Tom Holland and Charlie Rowe emerged as finalists, and further auditions followed. Holland was cast in June 2015 on a six-picture deal covering three Spider-Man films and three other Marvel Cinematic Universe films. His first appearance in the costume would come in a team film rather than a solo one.
Sam Raimi won the director's job partly because producers were impressed by his enthusiasm, even though he was not an immediate favorite. David Koepp wrote the script, building on ideas from Cameron's treatment. Scott Rosenberg and then Alvin Sargent revised it, with Sargent aiming to improve the dialogue.
In Spider-Man, Peter struggles to adapt to powers from the bite of a genetically engineered spider. After the death of his uncle Ben, played by Cliff Robertson, he vows to contain crime in New York. That leads to a clash with the Green Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe. Filming ran from January to June 2001, and Sony extended post-production before the May 2002 release. The film grossed $825 million worldwide, the third highest of 2002, and earned Academy Award nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 75th ceremony. It also reshaped how Hollywood thought about superheroes.
Columbia announced a sequel in April 2002 and rehired most of the original crew. The script came from a draft by Koepp, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, with Sargent credited as lead screenwriter. The plot drew partly on the comic story Spider-Man No More! Peter's powers fail amid strife in his daily life, and he turns his back on his duties. Meanwhile his mentor Dr. Otto Octavius, played by Alfred Molina, runs a nuclear experiment. It corrupts the tentacled device fused to his spine and then his mind, turning him into Doctor Octopus, a mad scientist bent on destroying New York with a fusion reactor. Filming took place in 2003, and the film premiered in June 2004. It won Best Visual Effects at the 77th Academy Awards.
While Spider-Man 2 was still in theaters, Raimi and his brother Ivan spent about two months preparing a treatment for the next film. Sargent returned to write the screenplay. The filmmakers wanted a story of redemption and forgiveness, and they emphasized Peter's evolving relationship with Mary Jane Watson, played by Kirsten Dunst. Peter faces Flint Marko, who becomes Sandman, played by Thomas Haden Church. He also battles an extraterrestrial symbiote and Eddie Brock, who becomes Venom, played by Topher Grace. Filming ran from January to July 2006, and the film opened in May 2007. Spider-Man 3 finished with $890.9 million but drew mixed reviews.
In January 2010, Sony cancelled Spider-Man 4 and began developing a reboot. Raimi had withdrawn as director. He was unhappy with Spider-Man 3 and wanted a satisfying ending for the series, but he could not fix the story in the time allowed. The release date was postponed several times while the writing changed. Writers David Lindsay-Abaire and Gary Ross rewrote the script in November 2008 and October 2009. Accounts of the plan conflict. One Deadline Hollywood report said Sony wanted a fifth film shot back-to-back with the fourth, while Raimi said in a 2009 interview that the studio pursued only the fourth. Sony had also hired James Vanderbilt to write scripts for a fourth, fifth and sixth film.
Marc Webb directed the reboot, chosen from a shortlist that included David Fincher and Wes Anderson. Columbia worked with Marvel Studios on an origin story that would show Peter's civilian life. Sargent, Vanderbilt and Steve Kloves produced the finished script, and the filmmakers wanted Peter's status as an outcast to feel modern. In The Amazing Spider-Man, Peter confronts the Lizard, the monstrous form of Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans. Connors is an Oscorp scientist who once partnered with Peter's late father. Filming ran from December 2010 to April 2011, and the film opened in July 2012. It took $758 million, the seventh highest total of 2012.
Webb and Garfield were confirmed for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in September 2012. Vanderbilt outlined a draft, and Jeff Pinkner, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman took over the scriptwriting. The filmmakers redesigned the costume to resemble both the comic book suits and the suit from the Raimi films. Peter tries to protect Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, and fights Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, and a vengeful Harry Osborn, played by Dane DeHaan. Filming lasted about 100 days, and the film opened in May 2014. It was profitable but failed to match its predecessor.
Sony had commissioned a third and fourth sequel for 2016 and 2018, but it secured Webb's commitment only for the first of them. Spinoff projects took precedence after the relative failure of the second film. Sequel development then collapsed when Sony signed a new licensing agreement with Marvel and its parent company, Walt Disney Studios.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, floated an unusual idea to Amy Pascal, then co-chairman of Sony. He suggested folding The Amazing Spider-Man films into the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the fact, to improve their prospects. Marvel had wanted Spider-Man in its shared universe since 2014 and was pressing for control of the rights after its recent box office success. Pascal and producer Avi Arad had already tried to build continuity by approving the Oscorp Tower design for The Avengers, from 2012. Approval came too late in that production. Another proposal was a crossover between the Webb universe and the Raimi trilogy.
In December 2014, an anonymous group hacked Sony's computer networks and leaked confidential information. The leak included emails about licensing Spider-Man for Captain America: Civil War, from 2016. Negotiations stalled until Sony and Disney reached an agreement in February 2015. It restored their earlier arrangement and added a clause letting Marvel reduce its annual royalty payments to Sony based on how its films performed. Sony kept full creative control of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spider-Man films.
The studios renegotiated in 2019, and the partnership briefly dissolved. Sony wanted to keep the original agreement, which gave Disney merchandising rights and 5% of first-dollar gross. Disney demanded that future Spider-Man films produced by Feige be funded equally, which would raise its share of profits. Talks resumed after public backlash to Sony, and a new deal arrived that September. It guaranteed a third Spider-Man film and a related Marvel Cinematic Universe project.
Captain America: Civil War marked Spider-Man's first appearance in the shared universe. Anthony and Joe Russo, the directors, campaigned intensively to bring the character back, and production began in 2015 and lasted four months. Holland later appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, from 2018, and Avengers: Endgame, from 2019. Those two were first conceived as a single two-part film, then split and shot concurrently in 2017.
Work on a solo film began in February 2015, and Jon Watts signed as director of Spider-Man: Homecoming in June of that year. Ted Melfi and Jonathan Levine had also been considered. Watts had caught Marvel's attention with the independent thriller Cop Car, from 2015. The filmmakers described the story as coming-of-age. Shooting ran from June to October 2016, and the film opened in July 2017.
Studio executives were thinking about sequels before Homecoming even opened. Spider-Man: Far From Home became the last film of the third phase of the shared universe, known as the Infinity Saga. Watts wanted to settle the Spider-Man threads that Endgame left ambiguous. Nick Fury, played by Samuel L. Jackson, recruits Peter to help defeat the Elementals alongside Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Filming ran from July to October 2018, and the film opened in July 2019. It was the first Spider-Man film to gross $1 billion.
Screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers built Spider-Man: No Way Home around a multiverse idea inspired by the 1946 fantasy drama It's a Wonderful Life. Peter persuades Dr. Stephen Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, to cast a spell reversing the events that exposed his identity. The film links Sony's Spider-Man universes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and brings back Maguire's and Garfield's versions of the hero. Production ran from October 2020 to March 2021, and the film debuted in December 2021. It earned $1.910 billion, the highest total of any film that year.
Pascal announced a second trilogy of these films in 2021. No Way Home had been Holland's last contracted standalone Spider-Man film, but he was confirmed in 2024 to return for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Destin Daniel Cretton will direct it. Principal photography was postponed to fit Holland's commitments to Avengers: Doomsday and Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, both from 2026. Brand New Day was scheduled for release on the 31st of July 2026.
The relative failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 led Sony to plan spinoffs, including an animated film. Pascal approached and then hired Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as co-producers. Their concept drew on the Spider-Verse story from the comics. It starred Miles Morales, an alternate Spider-Man from Marvel's Ultimate Comics imprint. Lord and Rodney Rothman prepared the script of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and directing duties were split among Rothman, Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey.
Shameik Moore's casting as Miles was announced in April 2017. Jake Johnson, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage and Chris Pine voice Spider-Men from alternate universes. The Spider-Verse timeline exists independently from the live-action films. After its December 2018 release, Into the Spider-Verse became the first non-Disney film in seven years to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Studio talks about a sequel began before Into the Spider-Verse was even released. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse started as a planned two-part film, which the filmmakers revised once their story pointed to a separate follow-up. Lord and Miller returned with David Callaham to write a plot built around a romance between Miles and Gwen Stacy, who is Spider-Woman, voiced by Hailee Steinfeld. Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson directed. The cast of Spider-People grew, led by Johnson, Oscar Isaac, Issa Rae, Daniel Kaluuya and Karan Soni. Production was mired in labor disputes. After a delay, the film opened in June 2023 and finished the year as the sixth highest-grossing film, with $690.9 million. It was also a candidate for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse was developed alongside its predecessor. Sony first scheduled it for the 29th of March 2024, then postponed it indefinitely in the wake of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The studio now plans to release it on the 18th of June 2027.
Sony pursued a separate path in live action. Since 2018, it has distributed films about secondary characters from the Spider-Man stories under the banner Sony's Spider-Man Universe. Venom opened that line in 2018 and became a trilogy with Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021 and Venom: The Last Dance in 2024. Morbius came in 2022, and Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter in 2024. After the box office failures of the last two, Sony stopped making these films indefinitely. The series shares loose continuity with the other Spider-Man franchises but does not explicitly feature the hero, apart from showing Peter's birth in Madame Web.
Sony also kept the older films in circulation. In March 2024, it launched a theatrical re-release campaign to mark Columbia's centennial anniversary. The Raimi trilogy returned in April, The Amazing Spider-Man films followed in mid-May, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy ran over weekends from late May to early June. The Raimi trilogy played again in a two-weekend campaign in late 2025, with Fathom Events.
The animated world has already spawned shorts. Spider-Ham: Caught in a Ham arrived on the 26th of February 2019, alongside the digital launch of Into the Spider-Verse, with Mulaney reprising his role. The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story premiered at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France in June 2023 and reached YouTube in March 2024. It shows Miles suffering a panic attack triggered by stress in his personal life.
More spinoffs are in development. Kaluuya is writing a Spider-Punk film with Ajon Singh. A Spider-Women project will center on Gwen and introduce Cindy Moon, known as Silk, and Jessica Drew, known as Spider-Woman. In May 2023, reports emerged that Sony was weighing a live-action Miles Morales film, which would take priority after Brand New Day and Beyond the Spider-Verse.
