~5 min read · Ch. 1 of 8
On the desert world of Tatooine, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn finds a young boy named Anakin Skywalker and his mother Shmi Skywalker working as slaves for the junk merchant Watto. Shmi tells Qui-Gon that Anakin has no father, suggesting he was conceived through midi-chlorians rather than traditional means. This discovery marks the beginning of a bloodline with strong inherent capabilities related to the Force. Anakin leaves Tatooine to begin his Jedi training while Shmi remains behind in slavery. The bond between mother and son is severed when Anakin departs, but they promise to meet again. In Star Wars: Episode I , The Phantom Menace, this moment establishes the family's connection to the galaxy's most powerful force.
Tragedy And The Fall To Darkness
Anakin travels back to Tatooine after sensing his mother is in pain during Star Wars: Episode II , Attack of the Clones. He discovers she had been freed by moisture farmer Cliegg Lars and married him, becoming stepmother to Owen Lars. However, Tusken Raiders have kidnapped her and taken her into their encampment. Anakin arrives too late to save her; she dies beaten and tortured beyond help in his arms. Her death ignites a strong anger within him, setting him on the path to becoming Darth Vader. He slaughters every single Tusken in the camp, including women and children. Heartbroken and enraged, Anakin brings Shmi's body back to the Lars' homestead for burial. This tragedy becomes the catalyst for his transformation from Jedi apprentice to Sith Lord.
