  Adam Driver was born on the 19th of November 1983 in Fontana, California, and grew up in Mishawaka, Indiana, a place far removed from any film set or casting office. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps shortly after the September 11 attacks, was assigned to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines as an 81mm mortar man, and served two years and eight months before fracturing his sternum in a mountain biking accident. That injury changed everything. He auditioned for Juilliard, got in, graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2009, and within a few years was being called one of the most compelling screen presences in American cinema. How does a Baptist-raised misfit from Indiana, who once co-founded a fight club inspired by a 1999 film and tried to launch an acting career only to break down in Amarillo, Texas, end up collecting consecutive Oscar nominations and critical praise from the director of Raging Bull? • 2. Mishawaka to the Marines

  Rodney G. Wright, Driver's stepfather and a Baptist minister, raised him in Mishawaka, Indiana, after his parents divorced. Driver sang in the church choir and performed in high school productions of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Into the Woods, and Guys and Dolls. He described his teenage self to M Magazine as a "misfit" who climbed radio towers and set objects on fire. He applied to Juilliard straight out of Mishawaka High School in 2001, knowing they would not look at his grades, and was turned down.

  He tried knocking on doors in Los Angeles after high school, working first as a door-to-door salesman selling Kirby vacuum cleaners, then as a telemarketer for a basement waterproofing company. His car broke down in Amarillo, Texas, on the drive west. He made it only as far as Santa Monica, lived in a hostel for two days, was scammed by a real estate agent, ran out of money, and returned to Indiana after just one week. The experience left him without a foothold in the industry and without a clear path forward.

  The September 11 attacks shifted everything. Driver enlisted in the Marine Corps and spent his service years as a mortar man, a role that demanded precision, discipline, and physical endurance. A mountain biking accident that fractured his sternum ended his service after two years and eight months. He then spent a year at the University of Indianapolis before auditioning again for Juilliard. He got the acceptance call while working at the Target Distribution Center in Indianapolis.

• 3. Juilliard and Early Stage Work

  Group 38 of Juilliard's Drama Division, the class Driver joined in 2005, was where he met Joanne Tucker, who later became his wife. His classmates saw him as intimidating and volatile, someone still recalibrating after years in the Marines. He graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2009 after four years in the program.

  His early stage work set the pattern for a career that would move between theater and film without treating one as more serious than the other. He made his Broadway debut in the George Bernard Shaw play Mrs. Warren's Profession in 2010 at the American Airlines Theatre. He followed that with Man and Boy in 2011 at the same venue. Off-Broadway, he won the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Play for playing Cliff, a working-class Welsh houseguest, in Look Back in Anger at the Roundabout Theatre Company.

  His film debut came in Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar, where he played Walter Lyle. The role was small, but it placed him in front of a major director early in his career. Tucker's own background has a notable thread: she is the granddaughter of Bermudian politician Henry Tucker. The couple married in June 2013 and had their first child, a son, in 2016, keeping the news private from the press for two years.

  Lena Dunham's HBO comedy-drama Girls launched in 2012, and Driver's role as Adam Sackler, the emotionally unstable boyfriend of Dunham's character, ran across 49 episodes from 2012 to 2017. Three consecutive Primetime Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series followed, a run of recognition that signaled he was doing something distinctive with a character who could easily have been a supporting footnote.

  During those same years he kept accumulating film credits that covered a wide range of directors and registers. He played telegraph and cipher officer Samuel Beckwith in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, appeared in Noah Baumbach's Frances Ha as Lev Shapiro, and played a musician in the Coen Brothers' Inside Llewyn Davis. For Vogue's September 2013 issue, he appeared alongside Canadian model Daria Werbowy in a shoot set in Ireland and photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

  The performance that first attracted major international award attention came in Hungry Hearts in 2014, where Driver played a despairing father. At the 71st Venice International Film Festival, the film won him the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. That prize placed him in a long line of actors recognized on the Lido, and it arrived the same year he was cast as the villain Kylo Ren in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

• 5. Kylo Ren and Global Reach

  Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened on the 18th of December 2015 to commercial and critical success. Driver had been cast as Kylo Ren in early 2014, and the role required him to hold a blockbuster franchise together through three films: The Last Jedi in 2017 and The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 followed. Critic David Edelstein of Vulture wrote that "the core of The Last Jedi, of this whole trilogy, it seems, is Driver's Kylo Ren, who ranks with cinema's most fascinating human monsters." Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian described Driver in The Force Awakens as "gorgeously cruel, spiteful and capricious."

  Driver wanted to extend his tenure in the role after the trilogy concluded. He sought to play the character in a spin-off film titled The Hunt for Ben Solo, with a screenplay written by Steven Soderbergh, but Disney Studios rejected the script.

  Alongside the franchise work, Driver kept taking roles that pointed in the opposite direction. He lost almost 50 pounds to play a 17th-century Portuguese Jesuit priest in Martin Scorsese's Silence in 2016. In Jim Jarmusch's Paterson, released on the 28th of December 2016, he played a bus driver who writes poetry. Paterson premiered at the 69th Cannes Film Festival and won Driver the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor. Peter Travers of Rolling Stone wrote that Driver's portrayal was "so lived-in and lyrical you hardly recognize it as acting." The film appeared on many critics' top ten lists for 2016.

• 6. Oscar Territory

  Spike Lee's BlacKkKlansman premiered at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and was released on the 10th of August 2018. Driver played Detective Philip "Flip" Zimmerman, a Jewish police officer who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan. The Academy nominated him for Best Supporting Actor. The Golden Globe nomination followed the same season.

  The following year brought his nomination for Best Actor for Marriage Story, the Noah Baumbach film in which Driver played Charlie Barber opposite Scarlett Johansson. The film premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival. Jon Frosch, reviewing it in The Hollywood Reporter, wrote that Driver "delivers a brilliantly inhabited and shaded portrait" of a man going through a divorce. That nomination made Driver one of a small group of actors to receive Oscar nominations in both lead and supporting categories in consecutive years.

  He returned to Broadway in 2019 to play Pale in Lanford Wilson's Burn This at the Hudson Theatre, opposite Keri Russell in a production directed by Michael Mayer. His performance earned him a nomination for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. The same year he appeared in The Dead Don't Die, Jim Jarmusch's zombie film that premiered at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival, and in The Report as Daniel J. Jones, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.

• 7. Range and Recurring Collaborations

  Noah Baumbach has directed Driver five times. The collaboration began with Frances Ha in 2012, continued through The Meyerowitz Stories, Marriage Story, and White Noise in 2022, with Driver playing Jack Gladney in the latter. That density of collaboration is unusual; most actors reach three films with a director and stop. Baumbach's fifth with Driver, White Noise, adapted Don DeLillo's novel and marked a departure in scale from their more intimate earlier work.

  Martin Scorsese's Silence in 2016 required Driver to physically transform for a period film set in feudal Japan. Ridley Scott directed him twice in 2021: in The Last Duel, where Driver played the accused knight Jacques le Gris, and in House of Gucci, which covers the assassination of Maurizio Gucci. Michael Mann cast him as Enzo Ferrari in Ferrari in 2023, for which Driver also served as executive producer. In May 2023, he was announced as the honorary starter for the 107th running of the Indianapolis 500 auto race.

  On stage in 2024, Driver played fictional country music star Strings McCrane in Kenneth Lonergan's Hold On to Me Darling at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Robert Hoffer of The Wrap called McCrane the best role Driver had taken. The performance earned him nominations for the Drama Desk Award, Drama League Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award. Driver's fourth hosting of Saturday Night Live, on the 9th of December 2023, featured Olivia Rodrigo as the musical guest.

• 8. Arts in the Armed Forces

  Driver founded Arts in the Armed Forces, known as AITAF, a nonprofit that staged theatrical performances for all branches of the U.S. military, both domestically and abroad. The organization existed at the intersection of two parts of his life that most people would have no reason to connect: his time as a Marine and his work as a theater-trained actor. AITAF provided arts programming to military communities until dissolving in 2023.

  The nonprofit grew from Driver's direct experience of the distance between military life and the arts world. His Juilliard classmates had found him intimidating and volatile in the years just after his service, and that dissonance became the seed of the idea. Tucker, his wife, was co-involved in the work from its early stages.

  Driver has spoken publicly about his aversion to watching his own performances. During an NPR Fresh Air interview, the host played a clip from Marriage Story, and Driver chose to leave rather than continue listening. His technique at the theater is to step out during performances and then re-enter when the lights come up, pretending he had been there the whole time. His son was born in 2016, and Tucker gave birth to their daughter in April 2023. The Paper Tiger crime drama, directed by James Gray and co-starring Johansson and Miles Teller, premiered at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival.
