  • Vanessa Hudgens is an American actress and singer, born on the 14th of December 1988. In August 2007, a Disney Channel sequel starring her drew more than 17.2 million viewers in the United States. That made it the most-watched Disney Channel Original Movie of all time. Hudgens played Gabriella Montez, a new girl at school who falls for the captain of the basketball team. The role brought her mainstream recognition, and it also brought a kind of scrutiny that few teenagers face. How does an actress from Salinas, California, build a career once a franchise ends? What did the fame cost her, and what did she make of it? The answers begin well before her first Disney audition.

  • Salinas, California, is where Vanessa Anne Hudgens was born. She grew up in several places along the West Coast, from Oregon to Southern California. Her mother, Gina, held a series of office jobs, and her father, Gregory, worked as a firefighter. A younger sister, Stella, would also become an actress. Her father was mostly of English descent, while her mother is Filipina and grew up in Mindanao. All of her grandparents were musicians, and she was raised Catholic.

In 1998, Hudgens began performing in musical theater as a singer. Local productions of Carousel, The Wizard of Oz, The King and I, The Music Man and Cinderella were among her credits. Two years later she started auditioning for commercials and television shows. After she appeared in a television commercial, her family moved to Los Angeles. She briefly attended Orange County High School of the Arts and then studied at home with tutors.

Her first acting role came in 2002, when she played Tiffany in an episode of the CBS sitcom Still Standing. Later that year she appeared in an episode of the CBS series Robbery Homicide Division. In 2003 she made her film debut in the drama Thirteen, playing a supporting character named Noel. The film grossed $10 million worldwide and drew positive reviews. USA Today called it the most "powerful of all recent wayward-youth sagas".

Thunderbirds followed in 2004, based on a 1960s television series, with Hudgens as the character Tin-tin. The film was a commercial failure, and critics strongly faulted it for "abandoning the original concepts". Two feature films were now behind her, and the next big project would be made for television.

  • In January 2006, Disney Channel aired High School Musical, with Hudgens as Gabriella Montez. Gabriella is the new girl who falls for the basketball captain. The two discover a shared passion for singing and audition for the school play together. Zac Efron played the captain, and Ashley Tisdale also starred. During auditions, Hudgens was paired with Efron because of their chemistry. The premiere drew 7.7 million viewers in the United States. It was the network's most-watched film of that year until The Cheetah Girls 2 reached 8.1 million in August.

On the 17th of August 2007, Hudgens returned as Gabriella in High School Musical 2. Disney Channel built anticipation with a weekly program called Road to High School Musical 2, which began on the 8th of June. It gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the production. Radio Disney had already played the opening number, What Time Is It, on the 25th of May, and introduced You Are the Music in Me on the 13th of July.

Robert Bianco of USA Today gave the sequel three stars out of four. He called it "sweet, smart, bursting with talent and energy, and awash in innocence". Critics did note an odd detail about the timing. The film premiered just as school was about to resume, yet its story followed the friends on summer vacation.

High School Musical 3: Senior Year was the first film in the series released in theaters. It opened at number one at the North American box office in October 2008, earning $42 million in its first weekend. That broke the opening record for a musical, previously held by Mamma Mia! The film finished with $252 million worldwide, which exceeded Disney's expectations. The songs Hudgens recorded for these films were already finding an audience of their own.

  • Breaking Free, a duet between Hudgens and Efron, reached number 4 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It also climbed to number 9 in the UK. That remains her highest peak on the American chart.

Through Hollywood Records, she released her debut studio album, V, on the 26th of September 2006. It sold 34,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 24 on the Billboard 200. In February 2007, the Recording Industry Association of America certified it Gold. By August 2009, it had sold 570,000 copies in the US. Two singles came first, Come Back to Me and Say OK, both moderately successful in several countries.

Identified, her second studio album, arrived in the United States on the 1st of July 2008. It sold 22,000 copies in its first week, which was 12,000 fewer than V. Even so, it debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200, one place higher than its predecessor. Its only preceding single, Sneakernight, peaked at number 88 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On tour, her path ran from supporting act to headliner. In 2006 she opened for The Cheetah Girls on their Party's Just Begun Tour. She co-headlined High School Musical: The Concert in 2006-07, and in 2008 she headlined the Identified Summer Tour. Radio Disney's 2006 awards list alone includes entries such as Favorite Karaoke Song for Breaking Free.

When the High School Musical series was complete, Hudgens said she was taking a break from her music career to focus more on acting.

  • Bandslam reached theaters on the 14th of August 2009, with Hudgens as Sa5m, a 15-year-old awkward freshman with untapped talents. The musical comedy was a commercial disappointment, but her performance won praise. David Waddington of the North Wales Pioneer wrote that she "outshines the rest of the cast".

March 2011 brought two very different films. In Sucker Punch, directed by Zack Snyder, she played Blondie, an institutionalized girl in an asylum and one of five female leads. It opened at number two in North America with $19 million and totaled $89 million worldwide. Beastly, released on the 4th of March, paired her with Alex Pettyfer in an adaptation of Alex Flinn's 2007 novel. Hudgens played Linda Taylor, whom she described as "the 'beauty' of the story but not the stereotypical beauty everyone thinks of." Reviews were mostly negative, and it earned $28 million worldwide as of 2012.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, in 2012, put her opposite Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson, as Hutcherson's love interest. The sequel to the 2008 film Journey to the Center of the Earth earned $325 million worldwide, outperforming its predecessor. Reviews were mixed to negative.

Spring Breakers arrived in March 2013 with Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine and James Franco. Four college-aged girls rob a fast food restaurant to pay for their spring break. Reviews were generally positive, though the film dealt with mature themes. To coincide with it, Hudgens released a dubstep-influenced song, $$$ex, produced by Rock Mafia with guest vocals from YLA. She later said of a sex scene: "It was very nerve-racking for me. I told my agent that I never want to do it ever again."

That same year she played Cindy Paulson in The Frozen Ground, based on the Robert Hansen serial murder case. Paulson was Hansen's only known victim to escape, and Hudgens shared the screen with John Cusack and Nicolas Cage. She also appeared in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills. Spike Jonze's short Choose You, with Michael Shannon, Joel Marsh Garland, Dree Hemingway and Nick Lashaway, was performed live as a skit at the first YouTube Music Awards, set to music by Avicii.

In 2014, Gimme Shelter cast her as a pregnant teenage runaway, opposite Brendan Fraser, in a drama written and directed by Ron Krauss. Freaks of Nature, a Columbia Pictures comedy horror, followed in 2015, the same year she took on a very different kind of project on stage.

  • From the 6th to the 8th of August 2010, Hudgens played Mimi in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl. Her casting drew negative comments. Director Neil Patrick Harris defended it: "Vanessa is awesome. She's a friend. I asked her to come in and sing to make sure she had the chops for it. And she was very committed and seemed great."

Gigi opened at the Kennedy Center on the 16th of January 2015 and ran until the 12th of February. It then transferred to Broadway on the 8th of April and closed on the 21st of June. Hudgens took the title role in the Lerner and Loewe musical, which marked her Broadway debut.

On the 31st of January 2016, she played Rizzo in Grease Live!, Fox's live broadcast of the musical. Her father died of cancer one day before the special aired, and she dedicated her performance to him. In 2018 she played Vanessa Morales in a Kennedy Center production of Lin-Manuel Miranda's original musical In the Heights. In January 2019 she returned to Fox for Rent: Live, this time as Maureen Johnson.

Television also gave her work in 2017. She played Emily Locke in the NBC comedy Powerless, based on DC Comics characters, which was cancelled after one season. She featured in the music video for Shawn Hook's single Reminding Me. On the 21st of May she hosted the Billboard Music Awards with the rapper Ludacris. She also judged the 14th season of So You Think You Can Dance alongside Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy, and returned for the 15th.

Hosting became a recurring part of her work. In 2020 she hosted the MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time special, which looked back on film and television moments since the 1980s. In March 2022 she co-hosted the red carpet pre-show for the 94th Academy Awards with Terrence J, Sofia Carson and Brandon Maxwell. In May she co-hosted Vogue's Met Gala red carpet livestream with La La Anthony and the magazine's editor-at-large Hamish Bowles. In June she co-hosted the 30th MTV Movie & TV Awards with Tayshia Adams, taking the first half for film and scripted television.

In 2024, she competed in season eleven of The Masked Singer as "Goldfish" and won. Scott Porter, as "Gumball", finished second. Both made references to their work in Bandslam.

  • November 2018 brought The Princess Switch to Netflix. Hudgens played both a European duchess and a pastry chef from Chicago who temporarily trade roles. The film grew into a series. The Princess Switch: Switched Again followed in November 2020, and The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, directed by Michael Rohl, arrived in November 2021. In the third film she reprised her three roles. She also served as a producer on the sequels, and on The Knight Before Christmas, which she starred in during November 2019.

Her work outside the Christmas films kept widening. In 2018 she appeared in the romantic comedy Dog Days with Finn Wolfhard and Nina Dobrev. In December of that year she co-starred opposite Jennifer Lopez in Second Act, directed by Peter Segal. She also joined Mads Mikkelsen in Polar, the Netflix adaptation of Víctor Santos's 2013 graphic novel Polar: Came From the Cold.

Bad Boys for Life, the third entry in its franchise, grossed over $426 million worldwide in 2020. In 2021 she voiced the lead character, Sunny Starscout, in the animated Netflix film My Little Pony: A New Generation. Later that year she appeared in Tick, Tick... Boom!, directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. She played Karessa Johnson, a friend of playwright Jonathan Larson, and lent her voice to songs on the soundtrack.

Asking for It, an action thriller from Paramount Pictures, reached theaters, digital platforms and Blu-ray on the 4th of March 2022. Hudgens starred with Alexandra Shipp, Kiersey Clemons and Ezra Miller. She also starred in Downtown Owl, a film from Hamish Linklater and Lily Rabe, alongside Rabe, Ed Harris, Finn Wittrock, Jack Dylan Grazer and August Blanco Rosenstein, produced by Sony Pictures' label Stage 6 Films. Her credits across film, television and stage now number over 80.

  • On the 6th of September 2007, photos allegedly stolen from Hudgens were leaked online, one showing her nude. Her publicist said the photo was taken privately and called its release unfortunate. Hudgens later apologized, saying she was "embarrassed over the situation" and regretted having "taken those photos". In October 2007, OK! magazine speculated she would be dropped from High School Musical 3. The Walt Disney Company denied it, saying: "Vanessa has apologized for what was obviously a lapse in judgment. We hope she's learned a valuable lesson."

Another set of images emerged in August 2009, and her lawyers asked for their removal. In late 2009 she sued www.moejackson.com for posting private photographs taken on a mobile phone. Discussing the aftermath in Allure, she said: "If anything, it makes it more embarrassing, because that was a private thing."

Money brought its own disputes. Her earnings were estimated at $2 million in 2006, and Forbes included her in early 2007. On the 12th of December 2008, Forbes ranked her No. 20 among its High Earners Under 30, with estimated earnings of $3 million that year. Brian Schall sued her in 2007 for alleged breach of contract, claiming she owed $150,000 after he advanced costs for her music career. Hudgens argued she was a 16-year-old minor when she signed in October 2005, and she disaffirmed the contract on the 9th of October 2008. Johnny Vieira sued in 2008 over a claimed share of her advances and royalties, and that case settled in early May 2009.

Her endorsements included Neutrogena and Sears's 2008 back-to-school campaign. In 2007 she became a spokesperson for Marc Eckō products but ended the contract after two years. She volunteered for Best Buddies International, Lollipop Theater Network, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the VH1 Save The Music Foundation. She also appeared on A Very Special Christmas Vol.7, which benefits the Special Olympics.

In May 2016, she paid $1,000 in restitution after carving initials in a heart on a rock in Coconino National Forest and showing it on Instagram. In March 2020, an Instagram video in which she called it "inevitable" that people would die from COVID-19 drew criticism. She later apologized for her "insensitive" remarks.

Her personal life has been closely followed too. She began dating Zac Efron in 2005, and the relationship ended in 2010. From 2011 to 2019 she dated Austin Butler. In 2020 she began dating baseball shortstop Cole Tucker, and they married on the 2nd of December 2023 in Tulum, Mexico. They have two children, born in mid-2024 and November 2025. Raised Catholic, she now identifies as a non-denominational Christian and attends the Los Angeles affiliate of Hillsong Church.

In October 2021, Architectural Digest showed her living in the "Little DeMille" house, which Cecil B. DeMille built for his mistress. She is a frequent Coachella attendee, unofficially called the "Queen of Coachella", and known for boho-chic style and sometimes going barefoot. In March 2023, the Philippine government named her a global tourism ambassador.
