  • Demi Lovato, an American singer, songwriter and actress, sang the national anthem at Super Bowl LIV in 2020. Eighteen years earlier, in 2002, Lovato was a child playing a character named Angela on the children's series Barney & Friends. Between those two moments lie more than 30 million records sold worldwide. The same career also includes a rock album that drew a ban on its own poster, a documentary the singer co-directed, and a cookbook. How does a young television actor become a pop star whose albums keep landing near the top of the charts? What did years in the spotlight cost her, and what did she choose to do with the attention? The answers begin in Albuquerque, with a family that was already coming apart.

  • Demetria Devonne Lovato was born on the 20th of August 1992 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her mother, Dianna De La Garza, was a former Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Her father, Patrick Martin Lovato, was an engineer and musician. She has an older full sister named Dallas and a younger maternal half-sister, the actress Madison De La Garza. An older paternal half-sister, Amber, was someone Lovato first spoke to at age 20.

In mid-1994, shortly after Lovato's second birthday, her parents divorced. Her father came from a Nuevomexicano family that had lived in New Mexico for generations. He was descended from the Civil War Union veteran Francisco Perea and from Francisco Xavier Chávez, a governor of Santa Fe de Nuevo México. Her mother is of Irish descent.

Lovato has spoken openly about a strained relationship with her father and has called him abusive. Yet she also said of him, "He was mean, but he wanted to be a good person." He died of cancer on the 22nd of June 2013. Afterward Lovato said he had been mentally ill, and she created the Lovato Treatment Scholarship Program in his honor. The program has paid treatment costs for mentally ill patients since 2013.

Lovato grew up in Dallas, Texas. She began playing the piano at age seven. At 10 she added guitar, dance classes and acting classes. She appeared on Prison Break in 2006 and on Just Jordan the following year. Acting brought bullying, so she asked to be homeschooled and eventually earned her high-school diploma that way.

Her romantic life later played out in public. In 2009 she dated the singer Trace Cyrus for a few months, and in 2010 she briefly dated the singer Joe Jonas. From August 2010 to June 2016 she had an on-again, off-again relationship with the actor Wilmer Valderrama. He was 29 when it began, and she was 18. Her 2022 single "29" was widely believed to be about that age gap, although Lovato did not confirm it. On the 23rd of July 2020 she announced an engagement to the actor Max Ehrich, and the two called it off that September.

Her public statements about identity came in stages. In March 2021 she said, "I've always known I was hella queer, but I have fully embraced it," and described herself as pansexual and sexually fluid. On the 19th of May 2021 she came out as non-binary and changed her pronouns to they/them. She had told family and friends toward the end of 2020. In April 2022 she added she/her, and later called herself a "fluid person" who had started to feel "more feminine".

On the 16th of December 2023, Lovato and the Canadian musician Jordan "Jutes" Lutes announced their engagement. The couple married on the 25th of May 2025 at the Bellosguardo Estate in Santa Barbara, California.

  • In 2007 Lovato played Charlotte Adams on the Disney Channel short series As the Bell Rings. That same year she auditioned for a television film called Camp Rock and for a series called Sonny with a Chance. She won both roles.

Camp Rock premiered on the 20th of June 2008 to 8.9 million viewers. Lovato played the lead, an aspiring singer named Mitchie Torres. Gillian Flynn of Entertainment Weekly was unimpressed with the acting and wrote that Lovato had "the knee-jerk smile of someone who is often told she has a great smile". The soundtrack came out three days before the film and debuted at number three on the US Billboard 200 with 188,000 units sold. Lovato sang four of its songs, including "We Rock" and "This Is Me". The latter was her debut single, a duet with Joe Jonas, and it climbed to number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.

That summer she signed with Hollywood Records and began her Demi Live! Warm Up Tour. She also appeared on the Jonas Brothers' Burnin' Up Tour.

In February 2009 Sonny with a Chance premiered. Lovato played Sonny Munroe, the newest cast member of a show-within-a-show called So Random!. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times rated her acting "very good" and compared her favorably to Miley Cyrus, the star of Hannah Montana. That June she starred in the film Princess Protection Program as Rosie Gonzalez, who is also Princess Rosalinda, opposite Selena Gomez. It drew 8.5 million viewers and ranks as the fourth highest-rated Disney Channel original movie.

In May 2010 Lovato guest-starred on Grey's Anatomy as Hayley May, a teenager with schizophrenia. Critics praised her versatility but were underwhelmed by the acting. They also felt the casting was meant mainly to attract viewers.

In November 2010 Lovato announced she was leaving Sonny with a Chance and putting acting on hiatus. Her departure ended the series. The cast returned in a spin-off, So Random!, which was canceled after one season.

  • Don't Forget, released on the 23rd of September 2008, debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200. First-week sales reached 89,000 copies. Ten of its songs were co-written with the Jonas Brothers, and the Recording Industry Association of America certified it Gold. The single "Get Back" peaked at number 43 on the Hot 100, and "La La Land" reached the top 40 in Ireland and the United Kingdom.

On the 21st of July 2009 came Here We Go Again, which Lovato compared to the acoustic style of John Mayer. It became her first number-one album, selling 108,000 copies in its first week. Its title track peaked at number 15 on the Hot 100, then her highest-charting solo single. She followed it with a 40-city national concert tour, Live in Concert, that ran from the 21st of June to the 21st of August 2009.

Unbroken arrived on the 20th of September 2011 and moved toward R&B with more mature themes. Some songs addressed her own struggles. Critics praised her vocals but found the party songs generic. "Skyscraper" debuted at number ten and sold 176,000 downloads in its first week. "Give Your Heart a Break" reached number 16 on the Hot 100 and number one on the Pop Songs chart. The song's climb was the longest by a female artist to reach number one there, until Halsey's feature on "Eastside" broke the record in 2019. Billboard has ranked it as Lovato's best song and called it "timeless".

In May 2012 Lovato became a judge and mentor on the second season of the US version of The X Factor, with a reported salary of one million dollars. She judged again in the third season, and her salary reportedly doubled. Her final act in the second season, CeCe Frey, was the ninth contestant eliminated, and her final act in the third, Rion Paige, finished fifth.

Demi, released on the 14th of May 2013, leaned into synthpop and bubblegum pop. It debuted at number three with 110,000 copies, her best first week to that point. Its lead single "Heart Attack" sold 215,000 copies in its first week and peaked at number ten. Her cover of "Let It Go" from the Disney film Frozen reached number 38 on the Hot 100 and spent 20 weeks on the chart. Her book Staying Strong: 365 Days a Year topped The New York Times bestseller list. In 2014 she appeared in four episodes of Glee as Dani, a struggling New York artist.

In May 2015, Billboard revealed that Lovato was starting a new record label, Safehouse Records. She co-founded it with Nick Jonas and her then-manager Phil McIntyre. Confident followed on the 16th of October 2015 and debuted at number two, earning a nomination for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards. Its lead single "Cool for the Summer" peaked at number 11 and attracted attention for its bi-curious theme.

In July 2017 "Sorry Not Sorry" became her highest-charting song in the United States at number six. It earned a quintuple Platinum certification, her highest in the US. Its parent album, Tell Me You Love Me, came out on the 29th of September 2017 and debuted at number three. That year Time magazine placed Lovato on its annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

  • At the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards in January 2020, Lovato performed "Anyone", her first musical appearance after a long hiatus. She had recorded the song four days before her 2018 overdose, and it was released on iTunes immediately after the show. Acting came back too. The Netflix comedy Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, released on the 26th of June 2020, was her first film role since Camp Rock 2. She also played Will's surrogate in the final season of Will & Grace.

Her single "I Love Me" earned two nominations at the 2020 MTV Video Music Awards. That made her the first artist in VMA history to be nominated every year for eight consecutive years. In January 2021 she sang "Lovely Day" by Bill Withers during Celebrating America, the primetime special marking the inauguration of Joe Biden.

A four-part YouTube documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil, premiered in March 2021. Michael D. Ratner directed it, and it traced her personal and musical journey over the previous three years. Lovato called the album Dancing with the Devil... the Art of Starting Over, released on the 2nd of April 2021, "the non-official soundtrack to the documentary". It debuted at number two with 74,000 album-equivalent units. She also launched a podcast, 4D with Demi Lovato, on the 19th of May 2021. Her talk show, The Demi Lovato Show, reached The Roku Channel on the 30th of July. On Peacock, Unidentified with Demi Lovato followed her search for signs of extraterrestrial life with her sister Dallas and her friend Matthew Montgomery.

In early 2022 she described her next album as "more rock than anything" and likened it to Don't Forget. "Skin of My Teeth" arrived on the 10th of June 2022, and Holy Fvck followed on the 19th of August 2022. It debuted at number seven, her eighth consecutive top-ten entry, and topped the Top Rock Albums and Top Alternative Albums charts. Her namesake tour ran for 34 shows across North America and South America. In August 2022 the UK Advertising Standards Authority banned a poster for the album showing Lovato on a cushioned crucifix. It judged the image likely to cause serious offence to Christians.

A rock version of "Heart Attack" was released on the 24th of March 2023. Revamped, a remix album of ten rock re-recordings of earlier songs, followed on the 15th of September 2023. Forbes called re-recording her hits a "brilliant business move". She also released the protest song "Swine" on the 22nd of June 2023, two days before the first anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

On the 17th of September 2024 Hulu released Child Star, a documentary Lovato co-directed with Nicola Marsh. It features her interviews with six former child stars and marks her directorial debut. In 2025 she played Nova, a homeless pregnant woman, in the drama Tow, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival on the 7th of June. Her ninth album, It's Not That Deep, came out on the 24th of October 2025 and debuted at number nine. She had said in October 2024 that it was "not rock at all". Her cookbook One Plate at a Time, published by Flatiron Books, appeared on the 31st of March 2026, and the It's Not That Deep Tour began on the 13th of April 2026.

  • Lovato has said her earliest idols were "power vocalists" such as Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. As a child she was "obsessed with Kelly Clarkson" and even used the AOL username "Little Kelly". She also named Billy Gilman, saying they had the same voice range when she was young and that she practiced to his songs all the time.

Her teenage listening was surprisingly heavy. She listened to metal bands including the Devil Wears Prada, Job for a Cowboy, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, and Bring Me the Horizon. John Mayer's songwriting was a "huge influence", and she says he taught her to write songs by starting with the titles. When she recorded "Without a Fight" with Brad Paisley, she said she had grown up listening to country music because her mother was a country singer.

Two later projects borrowed visual ideas from other stars. Her Neon Lights Tour was inspired by Beyoncé's 2013 self-titled visual album, specifically the visuals on screen. Tell Me You Love Me drew on Aguilera's album Stripped. Lovato said she was even inspired by its black and white artwork.

Critics have long singled out her voice, which they describe as a mezzo-soprano. Jeff Miers of The Buffalo News wrote of Here We Go Again, "Unlike so many of her Disney-fied peers, Lovato can really sing." The producer Ryan Tedder worked with her on Unbroken and said she "blew me out of the water vocally". Marielle Wakim of Los Angeles magazine reviewed the Demi World Tour and wrote that, at 22 years old, Lovato's vocal range was "astounding". Patrick Ryan of USA Today called her anthem performance "flawless" and said she even added riffs of her own.

  • Before she turned 18, Lovato had struggled with bulimia nervosa, self-harm and bullying. On the 1st of November 2010 she withdrew from the Jonas Brothers: Live in Concert tour and entered a treatment facility. It was reported that she decided to seek help after punching a backup dancer, Alex Welch. Lovato said she took "100 percent, full responsibility" for the incident.

She completed in-patient treatment at Timberline Knolls on the 28th of January 2011. She said she had been "self-medicating" with drugs and alcohol and had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In 2021 she said she no longer believed that diagnosis and that it had been revised to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Her recovery was not straightforward. In the 2017 documentary Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated, she admitted she had not been honest about her early sobriety. She said, "I wasn't working my program. I wasn't ready to get sober." She had already marked five years of sobriety on the 15th of March 2017.

On the 21st of June 2018 she released the single "Sober", revealing a relapse after six years. On the 24th of July 2018 she was rushed to the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after an opioid overdose. She later recalled, "The doctors told me that I had five to 10 minutes." She was revived with naloxone and suffered multiple strokes, a heart attack and brain damage. The brain damage caused lasting vision problems. She spent two weeks in the hospital and then entered an in-patient rehab facility. The overdose made her the most googled person of 2018, and CBS News ranked it the 29th biggest story of the year.

Looking back on that period, she tied the relapse to extreme measures by her then-manager, Phil McIntyre, to control what she ate. She said her team did not give her the help she needed. In 2021 she also said she was raped at age 15 by a co-star while working for the Disney Channel. According to Lovato, the assailant was never punished and was not removed from the film in which they were working.

In March 2021 Lovato said she was drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana in moderation, a choice many friends disagreed with. By that December she had abandoned what she called her "California sober ways" and declared herself "sober sober".

  • In 2016, GLAAD gave Lovato its Vanguard Award for her support of LGBT rights. In May 2014 she was named lead performer for NYC Pride Week and Grand Marshal of the LA Pride Parade, where she filmed the music video for "Really Don't Care". In December 2011 she condemned the Disney Channel for airing episodes of Shake It Up and So Random! that joked about eating disorders. The network apologized and removed them.

Mental health is the cause she returns to most. In May 2013 she was cited at a National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day for mentoring teens and young adults. She gave a 2016 speech at the Democratic National Convention on the subject. In September 2020 she became a Mental Health Spokesperson for the therapy company Talkspace. In September 2017 she was named a Global Citizen ambassador for work including support of displaced children in Iraq.

Her giving ranged widely. She traveled to Kenya in August 2013 for her 21st birthday with the charity Free the Children. She gave $50000 to Hurricane Harvey relief in August 2017. Her second activewear collection with Fabletics, released in June 2020, pledged up to $125,000 in proceeds to COVID-19 relief. On the 24th of March 2018 she performed at the March for Our Lives rally in Washington, D.C.

Business ventures have sometimes drawn criticism. From 2014 to 2016 she was the face of Skechers, and in December 2014 she launched the skincare line Devonne by Demi. Since 2017 she has released Fabletics collections to raise money for the United Nations Foundation's Girl Up campaign. In November 2021 she became the first celebrity ambassador for Gaia, Inc., an endorsement that drew criticism because the platform is widely described as promoting conspiracy theories.

Her most recent advocacy grew out of Child Star. Working with Chris McCarty, founder of the nonprofit Quit Clicking Kids, she pushed for protection of child performers' compensation. On the 26th of September 2024 she joined California governor Gavin Newsom as he signed two bills expanding the Coogan Law to cover child digital creators. She called the new rules "essentially the Coogan Law for the digital age".
