Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway

  • Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is a 95-minute Japanese animated film whose hero is a terrorist. Hathaway Noa leads a group that assassinates government officials, and the film asks its audience to follow him anyway. It is the first part of a planned trilogy from the studio Sunrise, directed by Shuko Murase, with music by Hiroyuki Sawano. Its source is a three-volume novel by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the creator of the original Mobile Suit Gundam, published in 1989 and 1990. That book waited roughly three decades for a screen version. Why did it take so long? How does a young man pulled between two legendary rivals end up on a hijacked flight bound for Earth? And how did a film postponed again and again by a pandemic still find its audience?

  • Haunzen Flight 356 leaves the lunar city of Von Braun for Hong Kong, carrying a passenger who is not what he claims to be. Hathaway Noa travels as a botanical observer. Midway through the journey, hijackers who say they belong to Mafty take over the aircraft. Hathaway and a Federation colonel named Kenneth Sleg work together to subdue them, and the flight lands in Davao City instead.

Detained for questioning, Hathaway meets Gigi Andalusia, a young woman who hints that she knows his real identity as Mafty's leader. She insists that they share a hotel suite. To shake off suspicion, Hathaway arranges for a Mafty unit flying Messer mobile suits to strike the hotel and create chaos. The Federation answers swiftly, the attack fails, and a Mafty pilot named Gawman is captured.

Hathaway slips away, rejoins his allies among the islands, and prepares to receive his new mobile suit, the Ξ Gundam. It will arrive from a cargo ship called Cargo Pisa during re-entry. Kenneth, alerted by Gigi's remarks, has begun to suspect the truth. He interrogates Gawman harshly and then places him in the cockpit of the Penelope as a hostage.

High above the planet, the Federation pilot Lane Aim intercepts Hathaway in that Penelope. Hathaway recognizes that Gawman is aboard and appeals directly to Lane, who agrees to let the prisoner go. Gawman crosses mid-air into the Ξ Gundam. Hathaway then tosses away a rifle to draw Lane's attention and fires missiles that badly damage the Penelope, though Lane survives. Mafty escapes aboard the support ship Valiant. After the credits, a single image shows a bloody conflict in a place called Oenpelli.

  • The year is U.C. 0105, twelve years after the events of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack. Humanity lives largely in space colonies because of overpopulation. The Earth Federation has grown corrupt, Earth itself is polluted, and the Federation wants laws that reserve the planet for a privileged elite. A police unit called Man Hunter brutally targets civilians who live on Earth illegally. A high-ranking officer using the alias Quack Salver founds a secret anti-government group, Mafty Navue Erin, and begins a campaign of assassinations.

Hathaway Noa joins that group and eventually leads it. He is the son of the Federation captain Bright Noa, and he carries the ideals of two men who once fought each other. Amuro Ray gave him humanism. Char Aznable gave him revolution. A third influence haunts him, a girl named Quess Paraya. The source novel and the 1988 film tell her death differently. In the novel Hathaway himself kills her, and the memory returns as a nightmare. In the film she pushes his mobile suit out of danger, is shot, and he kills the shooter in shock. Producer Naohiro Ogata said the new film would follow the movie while borrowing from the novel.

Casting was a delicate matter. Kensho Ono took over the role of Hathaway from Nozomu Sasaki, who had long voiced the character. Fans argued online, and Sasaki shared his own mixed feelings on Twitter. Ono answered with respect for his predecessor and won fan support. Reina Ueda voiced Gigi, Junichi Suwabe voiced Kenneth, and Soma Saito voiced Lane. Koichi Yamadera, who voiced the Man Hunter leader, had last appeared in the franchise 33 years earlier as Gyunei Guss. Three members of the band Alexandros also played Davao citizens, their first film voice roles.

The heart of the story is a triangle of Hathaway, Gigi, and Kenneth. Tomino himself gave director Murase notes on such triangular relationships, drawing on Korean films. Kenneth was drawn as a youthful, approachable older-brother figure, deliberately unlike Char's blonde look. His name for his anti-Mafty unit, on the other hand, comes from Greek myth: Circe, daughter of the sun god Helios.

  • Yasuhiro Moriki drew the mobile suits for Tomino's novel, and for three decades their intricate shapes made the book seem almost impossible to animate by hand. Kadokawa's Shinichiro Inoue said people had long asked for an adaptation, but the designs defeated the techniques of the 1980s. The answer was 3DCG with hand-drawn touches added on top.

Four designers reshaped Moriki's concepts: Hajime Katoki, Kimitoshi Yamane, Seiichi Nakatani, and Nobuhiko Genma. Katoki built prototypes, Genma refined them with Murase, and Nakatani finalized the animation drafts, using clay and paper as modeling aids. The Ξ Gundam, whose name comes from the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet, is meant as the successor to Amuro's Nu Gundam. It stands 26 meters tall and weighs 80 tons. Moriki had wanted a Gundam stripped of Gundam traits, closer to a monster with huge hands and two faces. Katoki found a white version in the novel's copyright illustrations, and Genma adopted that color, adding a red chest. A false Gundam face sits on the upper chest, while the real head looks ferocious. Nakatani built this machine entirely from scratch in 3DCG.

Its rival, the Penelope, was designed to look like a Gundam only on close inspection. Its large skirt-like parts give it a non-humanoid silhouette, and Murase's input gave its flight mode a wyvern feel. Its glowing yellow parts were nicknamed the Chiton treatment inside the team. Fitted with the Big Goose flight unit, the base Odysseus Gundam becomes a 32-meter, 112-ton machine. To the Federation it is the real Gundam, and the Ξ is the counterfeit. Bandai unveiled its first model tied to the film, a 1/144 Penelope about 20 centimeters tall, at the 2019 Shizuoka Hobby Show.

  • The production team spent a day and a half scouting Davao, a trip meant to make up for never scouting Hong Kong while making Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Murase was struck by the city's sky, waterfront, and sea. The designers wove in local detail to build a futuristic Philippine city, including the Jollibee restaurant chain, Summit beverages, souvenirs, and colorful taxis. They also scouted the Philippine Eagle Foundation in Calinan. The Davao night sequence follows civilians running for safety rather than the pilots above them. The cargo ship Pisa was modeled to resemble JAXA's space station, and the novel's 58-kilometer altitude for the Ξ Gundam handover became 150 kilometers in the film.

The battles mixed two methods. Hand-drawn animation and 3DCG were combined at the same resolution for the close fight between a Messer and a Gustav Karl during the Davao raid. Nakatani handled the Ξ and Penelope duel mostly in 3D. At Murase's suggestion, every beam shot was made in a 3D space using camera mapping, which turns 2D images into visuals with depth and motion. The studio YAMATOWORKS, led by Shupei Morita, built a 40,000-kilometer model of Earth.

Murase wanted dark imagery. Cinematographer Kentarō Waki noted that layering for dark scenes added heavily to the workload, and Kenta Wakabayashi brightened the composite by two levels for review. The sparks when the Gustav Karl strikes the Messer started as particle splashes. After consulting Genma and effects supervisor Shuichi Kaneko, the team reshaped them to resemble Chinese fireworks.

  • Dolby Atmos let theater audiences feel sound pressure from above. In the escape from the hotel attack, three-dimensional audio carried the impact of the battle outside. When Hathaway receives the Ξ Gundam, the sound team stressed heavy breathing and loud alarms inside his helmet. Ogata compared the theatrical experience to Christopher Nolan's films in IMAX. The sound designer had earlier worked on the Turn A Gundam film and Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises, and Hollywood sound design shaped the effort to modernize the franchise. Even the beam sounds differ from earlier Gundam works.

Hiroyuki Sawano began composing in mid-2019, and recording started in early 2020. Because Ogata wanted an adult-leaning film, Sawano favored a Hollywood-style approach, putting sound effects ahead of melody. Traces of his Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn style remain in the main theme. His track titles, such as "EARth," "83UeI," and "MNE," are written to draw attention to the music itself. The soundtrack entered the Billboard JAPAN weekly download album chart at number 8 on the 16th of June 2021. He also wrote two vocal pieces, "Möbius" for the opening and "TRACER" as an insert song. The high-energy section of "TRACER" ended up behind the sequence running from a dance scene to the Messer deployment piloted by Gawman.

The closing theme, "Senkō," came from the rock band Alexandros, who wrote it after reading the novel. The single was released on the 5th of May 2021. The costliest edition came with a custom-colored HG RX-78-2 Gundam model. For global streaming on Netflix, the ending song was swapped for an English-language one, matching a strategy aimed at overseas audiences.

  • On the 31st of December 2019, the film was announced for the 23rd of July 2020. The pandemic ended that plan. On the 4th of June 2020 the team announced a postponement, and a later date of the 7th of May 2021 was set. Then on the 26th of April 2021 a second delay moved the release to the 21st of May, which cancelled the premiere events and pushed back the limited-edition goods. On the 17th of May 2021, with Japan's emergency declaration extended, came a third delay with no new date. On the 1st of June, the team announced the 11th of June in the name of Mafty itself. Fans answered with memes built from quotes from earlier Gundam works.

The long wait was filled with promotion. Bandai had listed the film in its "UC NexT 0100" plan on the 20th of April 2018. A teaser on the 10th of January 2019 showed Hathaway alone on a beach, with a voice asking whether the listener had heard the name "Nejen." In 2021 the official GUNDAM Channel ran "Road to U.C. 0105," tying free film screenings to subscriber milestones, aiming for 1.05 million subscribers. By the 16th of April the channel had reached 991,000. It streamed Char's Counterattack free, drawing over 110,000 simultaneous viewers. Then, as a surprise, it posted the film's first 15 minutes and 53 seconds. That clip had 2.2 million views by the 7th of May.

On the 11th of June 2021 the film opened in 215 theaters, a record for a Gundam premiere in Japan. It also screened that day at the 24th Shanghai International Film Festival. Netflix launched it on the 1st of July with dubbing in 8 languages and subtitles in more than 30. The next day Bilibili followed, with sensitive and nude scenes removed from its version.

  • On opening day the film earned ¥190 million, 3.37 times the opening day of Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative. Ogata set a target of beating ¥2.3 billion, the record held by Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space from 1982. Ten days in, the film passed ¥1 billion, the first Gundam film to do so since Char's Counterattack in 1988. By the end of its fourth week it had out-earned that earlier film's entire run. After 52 days it topped ¥2 billion. Its 2021 domestic total reached ¥2.23 billion, ranking 14th among Japanese films of the year. Total admissions came to about 1.08 million.

Critics and audiences largely praised the visuals and the blend of CG and hand-drawn work. On the Chinese platform Douban the film opened at 9.0 before settling at 8.6, and Bilibili gave it 9.8. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 93% audience approval rating, and IMDb gave it 7 out of 10. Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network gave it a B. Complaints centered on compressed character development, a plot squeezed relative to the novel, and battle scenes so dark that mobile suit details were lost.

Then came the pumpkin. The hijacker leader wore a distinctive pumpkin mask, and viewers linked him to an older viral video of a pumpkin-masked dancer. Set to "Senkō," this became the "Mafty Passionate Speech" meme on Bilibili and Niconico. The Gadget Tsūshin Anime Buzzword Awards gave Gold to the Mafty meme and Bronze to the Pumpkin Dance. In January 2023 the film aired on television as four episodes and led the anime charts for two weeks.

The second part, The Sorcery of Nymph Circe, arrived on the 30th of January 2026. Because it is set in Australia, Ogata said the pandemic made on-site scouting hard, and the team planned to lean on online resources such as Google.
