Jollibee
Jollibee had more than 1,668 restaurants as of January 2024, and over 400 of them stood outside the Philippines. Those outlets were spread across 17 countries, from Canada and Hong Kong to the United Kingdom and Vietnam. Jollibee is the top fast-food chain in the Philippines, and it ranks among the fastest-growing restaurant chains in the world. Between 2014 and 2024, its international presence grew almost sixfold. It is the flagship brand of Jollibee Foods Corporation, usually shortened to JFC.
How did a homegrown Philippine chain survive the arrival of a global giant? What does it serve when it opens in countries with very different tastes? And why does a bee stand at the center of its logo?
In 1975, Tony Tan Caktiong and his family opened a Magnolia ice cream parlor in Cubao, Quezon City. Over time, the shop added hot meals and sandwiches. Customers took to the food even more than the ice cream. The family decided to turn the parlor into a fast-food restaurant, and in 1978 it became the first Jollibee outlet. A management consultant named Manuel C. Lumba advised them on the change in strategy. The name began as "Jolibe" before it became "Jollibee".
Jollibee Foods Corporation was incorporated in January 1978. By the end of that year, seven branches were operating in Metro Manila. The first franchised outlet followed in 1979, in Santa Cruz, Manila.
In 1981, McDonald's entered the Philippines. Jollibee withstood the challenger by concentrating on the particular tastes of Filipino customers. Growth stayed rapid, and the first provincial outlet opened in Mabalacat, Pampanga.
In 1985, the first overseas Jollibee opened at the Katong Shopping Centre in Singapore. That branch closed only a year later, and the brand did not return to Singapore until 2013. Also in 1985, the chain opened branches in the Middle East and Guam. North America came in 1998, when the first United States location opened in Daly City, California. Europe followed in 2018, with a branch in Milan, Italy.
Behind these openings sits JFC, which is based in Pasig. Besides Jollibee, it owns the Philippine brands Chowking, Greenwich Pizza, Red Ribbon Bakeshop and Mang Inasal. It also operates Burger King franchises.
Outside the Philippines, Vietnam and the United States are the biggest markets. Vietnam had about 200 outlets as of 2024, while North America had around 100. The customers differ from place to place. In the Middle East, the main market is overseas Filipino workers. In Vietnam, it is the local population.
Not every market held. Jollibee outlets have previously operated in Taiwan, mainland China, Indonesia, the Northern Mariana Islands and Papua New Guinea.
A slim, floppy, somewhat damp hamburger slathered with a strangely sweet mayo. That was how Michael Deacon of The Daily Telegraph described the Yumburger in a three-star review of a Jollibee location in London. The Yumburger, also spelled Yum Burger or Yum!, was among the first products the chain sold. It is a beef patty topped with mayonnaise.
In 2017, Jollibee introduced the Aloha Yumburger. That same year, an advertising video about the Yumburger went viral on YouTube in the Philippines. A collectible toy set depicting the burger arrived in 2018, packaged with the Jolly Kiddie Meal. Then in 2019, a Yumburger commercial about love on Father's Day became the subject of memes.
A bee has appeared in the Jollibee logo since 1978. In 1980, the mascot itself arrived as a large anthropomorphic bee in a red blazer, shirt and chef's hat. Its design is based on Mickey Mouse. The character was meant to epitomize Filipino optimism.
Founder Tony Tan has compared the mascot to the Filipino working class. He said the bee "hops around and produces sweet things for life, and is happy even though it is busy".
The bee did not stand alone. Chickee, a mascot for Chickenjoy, appeared in 1983 and was retired in the early 2000s. Lady Moo, who represented milkshakes, also began in 1983 and was discontinued by the mid-1990s. Hetty, tied to spaghetti, came in 1984, and Twirlie, tied to sundaes, in 1988. Champ, the face of the premium hamburger, debuted in 1984 and returned in a second incarnation in 2020.
In 2025, the stacked logo and the mascot received the well-known mark designation from the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines. The first of its kind to be registered, according to the source. JFC adopted a separate corporate logo that same year.
From 1996 to 2002, Jollibee partnered with GMA on Chikiting Patrol, a children's magazine show. The chain's own show came later. Jollitown premiered on the 13th of April 2008, timed to coincide with Jollibee's 30th anniversary.
The cast included Jollibee, Yum the scientist, Twirlie the star performer, Hetty the cheerleader and Popo the gym coach. At first it aired on GMA Network on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. On the 17th of July 2011, it moved to ABS-CBN for its fourth and fifth seasons, with a Sunday slot at 9:00 a.m. On the 20th of July 2013, it returned to GMA Network for its sixth season, which ended on the 12th of October.
The chain later turned to the internet. In November 2018, the 23 original Kwentong Jollibee videos on its YouTube channel had drawn 64 million views in total. By July 2020, that figure had climbed to 405 million, and the channel had 567,000 subscribers.
