Miami Heat
In 1987, the National Basketball Association granted one of four new expansion teams to Miami. The franchise began play in November 1988 as an expansion team alongside the Orlando Magic, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves. The early years were defined by mediocrity rather than immediate success. The Heat made the playoffs only twice in their first eight seasons, losing both times in the opening round. Ron Rothstein served as the franchise's first head coach from 1988 through 1991. Kevin Loughery took over from 1991 to 1995 but was fired after a 17, 29 record in the 1994, 95 season. Alvin Gentry filled the role on an interim basis before moving to Detroit. The team struggled to find its identity during this period.
Micky Arison purchased the franchise in 1995 and hired Pat Riley as team president and head coach. Riley acquired center Alonzo Mourning and point guard Tim Hardaway to transform Miami into a contender. The team improved to a 61, 21 record in the 1996, 97 season, earning the moniker Road Warriors for their 32, 9 road record. They reached the conference finals against Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls before losing in five games. In 2003, Miami selected Dwyane Wade with the fifth overall pick out of Marquette. A blockbuster trade brought Shaquille O’Neal from the Los Angeles Lakers just before the 2003, 04 season began. Alonzo Mourning returned that same year to serve as a backup to O’Neal. The Heat finished 59, 23 and earned the first seed in the Eastern Conference. After defeating the Indiana Pacers in the second round, they met the defending champion Detroit Pistons in the conference finals. Despite taking a 3, 2 lead, Wade went down injured in Game 6. The Heat lost Game 7 at home despite his return.
Entering the 2010, 11 season with nearly $48 million in salary cap space, the Heat signed Chris Bosh and LeBron James during free agency. This formed the Big Three alongside Dwyane Wade. The team started 9, 8 but improved after a players-only meeting. They finished 58, 24 and defeated the Philadelphia 76ers, Boston Celtics, and Chicago Bulls all in five games to reach the 2011 NBA Finals against Dallas. The Heat lost the series four games to two. In the shortened 2011, 12 season, Miami started 27, 7 and won their fourth consecutive Eastern Conference title. They defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Finals to win their second championship. On the 11th of July 2012, the Heat signed Ray Allen to a three-year contract and Rashard Lewis to a two-year deal. From the 3rd of February 2013, through the 27th of March 2013, they set an NBA record with a 27-game winning streak. They finished 66, 16 and swept the Milwaukee Bucks before defeating Chicago and Indiana to return to the Finals. The Spurs took Game 1 but the Heat won Game 6 when Ray Allen hit a three-pointer with 5.2 seconds left to force overtime. They won Game 7 behind LeBron James’ 37-point performance to capture back-to-back titles.
On the 11th of July 2014, LeBron James announced he would leave the Heat to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Wade and Chris Bosh remained in Miami. The team drafted Justise Winslow with the 10th pick in 2015. In 2016, Dwyane Wade returned from the Chicago Bulls after one season away. He retired following the 2018, 19 season. His jersey was retired in February 2020. In 2019, 20, Miami acquired Jimmy Butler, Andre Iguodala, and Jae Crowder while drafting Tyler Herro. The season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and resumed in Orlando’s NBA Bubble. The fifth-seeded Heat went 12, 3 in the bubble playoffs to win their sixth conference championship. They lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. The 2021, 22 season saw them finish first in the Southeast Division but lose to Boston in seven games of the Eastern Conference Finals. In 2022, 23, they became just the second eighth seed to reach the NBA Finals before losing to Denver. On the 5th of February 2025, Butler was traded to the Golden State Warriors in a multi-team deal.
The original uniforms unveiled for the 1988, 89 season featured simple striping on the right side only. Home jerseys were white with red, black, and orange trim; away jerseys were black with matching colors. The flaming ball logo appeared on the left leg of the shorts. A red alternate uniform introduced in 1995, 96 used black, white, and orange lettering. Current uniforms have been worn since 1999, 2000 with striping on both sides and yellow trim replacing orange. Special editions include Noche Latina promotions from 2007, 08 featuring El Heat wordmarks. The 2017, 18 City uniforms paid homage to Miami Vice with pink, light blue, and black accents. These wore the Miami Arena-inspired logo. Black versions followed in 2018, 19 while a pink Earned edition appeared exclusively for playoff qualifiers. In 2023, 24, the HEAT Culture uniform centered on organization identity with CULTURE written across the front. A modified version worn by Jaime Jaquez Jr. during the 2024 All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest read EL HEAT CULTURA. Midway through 2024, 25, the team retired the red HEAT Culture design in favor of reverting to the 2017, 18 white Miami Vice jersey as a temporary substitute.
