Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater

8 sections
  • Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater sends a soldier into the Soviet jungle in 1964, using a game that first appeared in 2004. It is a 2025 stealth action-adventure from Konami, rebuilt from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, the first chronological story in the Metal Gear series.

The hero is a FOX operative codenamed Naked Snake. His orders are to rescue a prominent Soviet rocket scientist and sabotage a nuclear superweapon called the Shagohod. Standing in his way is his former mentor, The Boss, who has defected to the Soviets. Confronting her is also meant to clear the United States of Soviet suspicion during the Cold War.

Why would a company that had stepped back from big console games return to a story first told in 2004? Why this entry, and not another? And what does a remake owe to the original it copies?

  • In September 2015, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain arrived, and series creator Hideo Kojima soon split publicly with Konami. The following month, Konami's head of gaming, Hideki Hayakawa, said the company would stop developing and publishing major third-party games for consoles and PC. Mobile gaming and arcades would get the attention instead.

Metal Gear Survive in 2018 was the exception. It was a spin-off made without Kojima, and it drew mixed reviews and failed commercially. Konami's focus then stayed on budget and mobile games rather than big-budget console releases, which is why Delta became the first major Metal Gear entry since Survive.

In October 2021, Andy Robinson of Video Games Chronicle reported that Konami was heading back to the mainstream games industry. Production was starting on several projects in dormant console franchises. Metal Gear was named, and so were Castlevania and Silent Hill, which meant Metal Gear was not the only sleeper waking.

  • Christopher Dring, a gaming industry expert, offered the BBC a theory for the wave of remakes. In his words, "the industry is getting older, gamers are entering middle age and are nostalgic for classic titles." Final Fantasy VII and Demon's Souls, both in 2020, and Resident Evil 4 in 2023, had all sold strongly as remakes.

Konami chose Snake Eater over the other Metal Gear games because it is an origin story. It explains the franchise itself, and it explains Big Boss in particular. Several of the series' pivotal characters also take their places in it.

Kojima was not involved in the remake, and neither was the original artist, Yoji Shinkawa. Konami said the team wanted a faithful adaptation and would add nothing new to the story. That promise shaped even the name on the box.

  • The Metal Gear Twitter account explained the Greek letter in the title this way: it "fits the concept of the remake project. Delta means 'change' or 'difference' without changing structure." The account was pointing to the symbol's use in math and science for a change in quantity.

The development team's stated goal matched that idea. They wanted to reproduce the gameplay and story of Snake Eater faithfully, with modern graphics and enhancements, but without major departures from the original structure.

Fans reacted in their own way and began jokingly calling the game "Metal Gear Solid Triangle." The joke gave the remake a nickname before anyone had played it.

  • Konami Digital Entertainment, the publisher's internal studio, developed the remake, as it had several earlier Metal Gear games. Virtuos, a studio based in Singapore, contributed additional development as a support studio.

Noriaki Okamura supervised the project. He had produced Metal Gear Survive and Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops in 2006. Yuji Korekado, creative producer on The Phantom Pain in 2015, supervised alongside him.

The game runs on Unreal Engine 5. That made it the first Metal Gear game since the dissolution of Kojima Productions to skip the Fox Engine, which Konami last used for Metal Gear Survive. The remake also reused the voice actors' audio from the original Snake Eater.

PlatinumGames, the developer of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance in 2013, joined late in the process. Konami announced on the 22nd of August, in the week before launch, that PlatinumGames had developed the remade "Guy Savage" mode.

  • Delta keeps the core stealth mechanics that Metal Gear Solid 3 introduced. Snake crosses tropical and industrial settings while dodging enemies, traps and surveillance, and he collects melee weapons, firearms and gadgets as he goes. Crouch-walking and third-person shooting are newer arrivals. They first appeared in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008 and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in 2010, then reached Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D in 2012.

Cuts and bruises on Naked Snake now stay on his body for the whole game, visible in real time. The aim is to show each player's own journey with the character. The Survival Viewer reflects the same idea, so scars remain even after bandages or ointments treat the wounds.

The revamped camouflage system follows the same logic. Leaves that fall from trees can stick to Snake's gear, and crawling through mud leaves stains on his clothing. Clothing also tears and collects bullet holes when he takes damage.

The "New Style" offers controls based on contemporary action games and recent Metal Gear entries, with a free-moving third-person camera like the one in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence and HD Edition. "Legacy Style" restores the classic controls and systems, with the fixed overhead camera of the original Snake Eater.

The original's "Snake vs. Monkey" minigame returns on PlayStation 5 and Steam. It is a crossover with Sony Interactive Entertainment's Ape Escape series. Xbox Series X/S and Microsoft Store versions get "Snake vs. Bomberman" instead, a crossover with Konami's own Bomberman series. The "Secret Theater" from Subsistence also comes back, with most of the original bonus videos plus new ones to unlock. Which crossover a player sees depends on where they buy the game.

  • On the 24th of May 2023, Konami announced the remake for PlayStation 5 at PlayStation Showcase 2023. It appeared beside the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 compilation, which includes the original version of Snake Eater. Windows and Xbox Series X/S versions were confirmed soon afterward.

An in-engine gameplay trailer followed on the 25th of October 2023, during Microsoft's Xbox Partner Preview. An early PlayStation promotional video had hinted at a 2024 launch window. On the 9th of June 2024, a full trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase gave brief looks at Major Zero, Para-Medic, Ocelot and The Boss.

The next day, Konami released an episode of its Metal Gear Solid Legacy web series with Snake's voice actor David Hayter and producer Noriaki Okamura. Okamura also spoke on a roundtable on the Official Xbox Podcast on the 11th of June. The release date trailer then debuted in the February 2025 State of Play.

The game launched on the 28th of August 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S. A Deluxe Edition and a Collector's Edition came with a SteelBook case showing Yoji Shinkawa's original Japanese key art of Naked Snake and The Boss. Each also included a custom FOX patch and vouchers for downloadable extras.

The Deluxe Edition added a metal and enamel keychain and a clamshell case with art cards. The Collector's Edition had a second patch that nods to Snake's HALO jump in the opening sequence, a replica key card, and a "Terrarium Diorama" of the tree in the Dremuchij region with Snake's backpack. A separate Collector's Edition was set for EMEA regions.

The online multiplayer mode, Fox Hunt, was missing at launch. It arrived on the 30th of October 2025.

  • Critics gave the game "generally favorable" reviews, according to the review aggregator Metacritic. Christopher Cruz of Rolling Stone mostly praised it but faulted it for sticking too close to the original. He compared it with the 2024 remake of the 2001 game Silent Hill 2. In his view, "Delta doesn't fundamentally change the game or make it feel new. In fact, it feels especially old in ways both good and bad..."

Cruz argued that familiarity with the original would decide how much a player enjoyed the remake. He closed his review with the line, "for now, we're left to dine on reheated leftovers."

In Japan, 63,585 physical units of the PlayStation 5 version sold in the first week. That made it the country's best-selling retail game of the week. Konami announced that global physical shipments and digital sales passed one million units within the first 24 hours.

The game was nominated for Best Remake/Remaster at the Golden Joystick Awards 2025. By March 2026, it had sold over 2 million copies worldwide.
