  • Jon Bon Jovi, born John Francis Bongiovi Jr. on the 2nd of March 1962, has played more than 3,000 concerts with his band in over 50 countries. The crowds added up to more than 35 million fans. He is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, and he has also worked as an actor. He founded the rock band that carries his stage name. This documentary asks how a New Jersey kid built a band that played to crowds around the world. It asks what a rock star does with fame once the stage is not enough, from film sets to football teams and community kitchens. And it asks what happens when the voice behind all those shows begins to fail him.

  • Perth Amboy, New Jersey, is where John Francis Bongiovi Jr. was born. His father, John Sr., born in 1930, was a barber and a former Marine. His mother, Carol, was also a former Marine, and she worked as a florist and had once been a Playboy Bunny. His father had Italian and Slovak ancestry, and the name Bongiovi comes from Sciacca, Sicily. His mother's side was German and Russian. Asked about his family tree, he joked about a famous rumour. He said, "I'm not a blood relative of Frank Sinatra, but I've always loved that rumour. Who wouldn't want to be related to the man?"

The boy was raised Catholic, but the strongest faith in the house was in The Beatles. During the height of Beatlemania, his mother became a fervent admirer of the band. She dreamed that her son would one day achieve similar fame. To plant a love of music in him, she gave him his first guitar when he was seven. The gift did not take. He received some lessons, never enjoyed them, and left the guitar in the basement. He later explained, "I liked the sound it made falling down the stairs more than any of those boring lessons."

His schooling moved between two towns. He spent his freshman and sophomore years at St. Joseph High School in Metuchen, New Jersey. He then transferred to Sayreville War Memorial High School in Parlin.

At 15, he went to a Bruce Springsteen concert with his friends. That night, he later said, he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. He went back to the guitar with a new teacher named Al Parinello. Parinello was very demanding, yet he also gave the teenager a real passion for music. Jon Bon Jovi later called those lessons one of the best things that had ever happened to him. When Parinello died in 1995, Bon Jovi carved the initials AP into his acoustic guitar. He kept doing that for many years. The bands, though, had begun forming well before that Springsteen night.

  • In 1974, Jon Bon Jovi formed a band called Raze and entered a talent contest at his school. At 16, he started another group, Atlantic City Expressway. David Bryan joined it, and he would later become a member of Bon Jovi itself. Still a teenager, Jon played in John Bongiovi and the Wild Ones. That group worked clubs such as the Fast Lane and opened for local acts.

In late 1979, he joined The Rest, a band founded by guitarist Jack Ponti. There he began writing his first songs. One of them, "Shot Through the Heart", would appear years later on the debut album of Bon Jovi. The Rest opened for New Jersey acts such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. No record company made an offer, however, and Ponti decided to disband the group.

By mid-1980, Jon was out of school and working part-time at a women's shoe store. He then took a job at Power Station Studios, a Manhattan recording facility. His cousin Tony Bongiovi was a co-owner there. One day he was sweeping the floor while the disco producer Meco recorded Christmas in the Stars: The Star Wars Christmas Album. Meco suggested that the young janitor sing "R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas". That became his first professional recording, and it was credited to John Bongiovi.

In 1981, he made his television debut with the John Bongiovi Band on The Uncle Floyd Show. Next came a stack of demo tapes, and one recording that would change everything.

  • Billy Squier produced one of the demos that Jon Bon Jovi mailed to record companies. None of them made an impact. In 1982, he recorded "Runaway" in his cousin's studio, backed by studio musicians. He had made a rough early recording of the song in 1981. For the 1982 version he gathered players he called The All Star Review. They were guitarist Tim Pierce, drummer Frankie LaRocka, bassist Hugh McDonald and keyboardist Roy Bittan, who played in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

A radio station gave the song its first break. Jon visited WAPP 103.5FM, known as "The Apple", in Lake Success, New York, to write and sing jingles. He spoke with DJ Chip Hobart and promotion director John Lassman. Lassman suggested that WAPP put "Runaway" on a compilation album of local homegrown talent. Jon was reluctant, but he handed the song over. It drew airplay around New York, and sister stations in major markets then picked it up.

In March 1983, Jon needed a band for a short tour supporting the song. He called David Bryan, who in turn called bassist Alec John Such and drummer Tico Torres. Both men had played in a band called Phantom's Opera. Such and Torres recommended hometown guitarist Richie Sambora, and Jon was impressed when he saw him play. After showcases and local opening slots, the group caught the attention of record executive Derek Shulman. He signed them to Mercury Records, part of the PolyGram company.

Jon wanted a group name, and Pamela Maher supplied one. She was a friend of Richard Fischer and worked for Doc McGhee. She proposed Bon Jovi, in the manner of two-word bands such as Van Halen. Her idea beat out the earlier choice, Johnny Electric, though it drew little enthusiasm at first. Two years later the band hit the charts under that name.

With McGhee as manager, the group recorded its debut album, Bon Jovi, released on the 21st of January 1984. It included "Runaway", the first hit single, which reached the top forty on the Billboard Hot 100. A second album followed in 1985 and was certified Gold by the RIAA.

Then came the third album, Slippery When Wet, in 1986. It brought global recognition and sold 30 million copies worldwide. Its first two singles, "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer", both reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The 1988 sequel New Jersey and the 1992 album Keep the Faith were each international hits, selling over ten million copies. The band folded elements of soft rock and country into its sound, which helped it stay popular into the 21st century.

As of 2022, the band had released 16 studio albums, three compilations and two live albums. It has sold more than 149 million records worldwide. The UK Music Hall of Fame inducted Bon Jovi in 2006, and the U.S. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame followed in 2018. Jon Bon Jovi himself entered the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2012, Billboard ranked him number 50 on its Power 100 list of the most powerful and influential people in the music business. Both Slippery When Wet and New Jersey had come with punishing tours, and those tours were about to exact a toll.

  • Sixteen months of concerts was what the band had behind it by the end of the New Jersey tour. Recording Slippery When Wet and New Jersey back to back, plus the fast world tours, left the members exhausted physically, mentally and emotionally. After the final show in Mexico, with no clear plans, they simply went home. The band has since said there were few if any goodbyes. During the break, each member retreated to his own projects, and none wanted to make another album.

In 1990, Jon turned to film. His friend Emilio Estevez had approached him to lend "Wanted Dead or Alive" as the theme for Estevez's upcoming Billy the Kid sequel. Instead, Jon wrote an all-new theme and ended up delivering his first solo album, the soundtrack to Young Guns II, commonly known as Blaze of Glory. Guests included Elton John, Little Richard and Jeff Beck. The title track reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1991, it won Favorite Pop/Rock Single at the American Music Awards and also won a Golden Globe. It earned him nominations for an Academy Award and a Grammy Award as well.

Also in 1991, he started his own label, Jambco Records. He produced Aldo Nova's album Blood on the Bricks and Billy Falcon's album Pretty Blue World. His second solo album, Destination Anywhere, arrived in 1997. A short movie of the same name used only songs from the record. It starred Jon Bon Jovi alongside Demi Moore, Kevin Bacon and Whoopi Goldberg, and it debuted in 1997 on both MTV and VH1.

In 2012, he recorded the soundtrack to the movie Stand Up Guys, commonly known as Not Running Anymore. Its title song was nominated for a Golden Globe Award that year. By then the acting he had tried alongside his music had become a second career of its own.

  • In 1995, Jon Bon Jovi played a character called The Painter in the film Moonlight and Valentino. Acting soon became a second career. His film credits include The Leading Man, Little City, Homegrown, No Looking Back, Row Your Boat, Vampires: Los Muertos, Cry Wolf, National Lampoon's Pucked and New Year's Eve. In U-571, he played Lieutenant Pete Emmett. In Pay It Forward, he took a supporting role as Helen Hunt's abusive ex-husband. His first screen appearance had been a brief, uncredited part in Young Guns II.

On television, he appeared in Sex and the City, 30 Rock, Las Vegas and The West Wing. On Ally McBeal he had an extended run as a plumber who was Ally's boyfriend for a short time. On the 24th of January 2011, it was confirmed that he would join New Year's Eve, released later that year. He played a successful rock star connected to Katherine Heigl's character.

In 2004, he became founder and primary owner of the Philadelphia Soul, a team in the Arena Football League. He appeared in several television commercials for the league, typically with John Elway. Elway was a Hall of Fame quarterback for the Denver Broncos and a co-owner of the league's Colorado Crush. Bon Jovi is no longer part owner of the Soul. In 2014, he joined a group that tried to buy the Buffalo Bills, but Terry Pegula won the sale.

On the 8th of June 2024, he opened JBJ's, a rooftop restaurant and bar at 405 Broadway in Nashville, Tennessee. It is themed around Bon Jovi and rock music, with live music every day. Each level of the multi-level venue has a balcony overlooking a central stage. The grand opening featured a performance by Bon Jovi and the rest of the band. It was their first full band show since the end of the 2022 tour. Guests included Vince Neil of Mötley Crue, Jeremy and Ajay Popoff from Lit, Big Kenny, Jelly Roll and Jamie O'Neal. JBJ's also has the first permanent installation of a Proto hologram machine in a music venue. It can show holograms of Jon and his band and "beam in" special guests.

On the 3rd of December 2025, he co-hosted NBC's Christmas in Rockefeller Center. He performed alongside Gwen Stefani, Marc Anthony and Reba McEntire. His song "Unbroken" explores the struggles of war veterans coping with PTSD and the healing presence of service animals.

  • On The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005, the band Bon Jovi, not the individual, donated $1 million to the Angel Network foundation. In July 2007, Jon announced a project to rehabilitate a block of 15 homes in North Philadelphia. The Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation was founded in 2006 under its earlier name, the Philadelphia Soul Charitable Foundation. It supports community efforts to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness.

On the 19th of October 2011, the foundation opened the JBJ Soul Kitchen in Red Bank, New Jersey. Patrons pay what they can afford for a meal, either with money or by volunteering their work. Three more locations have since opened, in Toms River, on the Newark campus of Rutgers University, and inside the Gilligan Student Union at New Jersey City University. In 2025, Mayor Dan Rodrick of Toms River accused the organization of attracting homeless people from other parts of the country to the town. Jon was also one of 21 artists on "Everybody Hurts", a charity single organized by Simon Cowell to aid victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.

His politics have been visible too. During the 2004 presidential campaign, he toured extensively for John Kerry. He played acoustic sets with Richie Sambora at rallies for the Kerry-Edwards ticket. In 2009, he played a Manhattan fundraiser for Hillary Clinton to help ease her $6.3 million 2008 campaign debt. On the 18th of January 2009, he performed Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come" as a duet with Bettye LaVette at Barack Obama's inauguration concert. On the 4th of June 2009, he gave an acoustic benefit show for New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine at the NJPAC in Newark.

On the 24th of June 2009, Bon Jovi, Sambora and Andy Madadian recorded a message of worldwide solidarity with the people of Iran. A handwritten Persian sign in the video translates to "we are one". On the 15th of December 2010, President Obama appointed him to the White House Council for Community Solutions.

His support has not run in one direction. In 2017, he raised money for Jim Renacci, a Republican congressman from Ohio and a possible candidate for governor. The two had shared business interests several years earlier. In the 2020 Democratic primaries, he endorsed fellow New Jersey resident Cory Booker. On the 24th of October 2020, he played a drive-in event for Joe Biden at Dallas High School in Dallas, Pennsylvania. On the 20th of January 2021, he and the Kings of Suburbia performed the Beatles' "Here Comes the Sun" for the "Celebrating America" inauguration event. On the 18th of October 2025, he joined a No Kings protest in New Jersey. His sign read "No Kings. No Tyrants. No Sycophants. No Trump."

  • On the 29th of April 1989, Jon Bon Jovi married his high school girlfriend, Dorothea Hurley, at the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. The two had slipped away in secret during a stop in Los Angeles on the New Jersey Syndicate Tour. They have a daughter, Stephanie, born in 1993, and three sons: Jesse, born in 1995, Jake, born in 2002, and Romeo, born in 2004. In 2024, the English actress Millie Bobby Brown married Jake, making her Jon's daughter-in-law. The couple adopted a daughter in 2025, and Jon became a grandfather.

For years he lived in Rumson, New Jersey, and built his Sanctuary Sound recording studio in the basement of the house. He calls himself a recovering Catholic. He is a close friend of New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and former head coach Bill Belichick. He owns two Super Bowl rings from the Patriots and has played several times at Gillette Stadium. In 2019, the University of Pennsylvania gave him an honorary Doctor of Music degree. Princeton University awarded him a second honorary doctorate in 2021, recognizing his work in music and social welfare.

In October 2021, he tested positive for COVID-19 at a fan event in Florida. He was fully vaccinated, showed no symptoms and said he felt "great". He had recovered by the 12th of November. In April 2022, he said the experience made him realize "how volatile we are and how fragile life is". He added, "It didn't matter if you were young or old, American or Egyptian, no matter who you were or where you were from, the COVID-19 pandemic affected you. I was aware of that when I was writing the record."

In February 2024, he revealed that he had been struggling with vocal cord problems. In June 2022, he had undergone reconstructive surgery, a procedure called vocal cord medialization. He then spent nearly two years in extensive daily vocal rehabilitation to regain his singing voice.

In September 2024, during a break from shooting a music video on the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge in Nashville, he noticed a woman preparing to jump. He persuaded her to climb back over the railing. Nashville police thanked him, and CNN released security camera footage of the incident.

In an October 2025 interview with People, he said that one of his vocal cords was atrophying. He was still trying multiple approaches to recover it.
