Hard Rock Stadium
In 1976, the city of Miami demanded a fourfold increase in rent for the Dolphins' existing home at the Orange Bowl. Team founder Joe Robbie decided to build a new facility entirely with private money. The stadium opened on the 16th of August 1987, as Joe Robbie Stadium. It stood in unincorporated Miami-Dade County within the Scott Lake census-designated place before the area became the city of Miami Gardens on the 13th of May 2003. Robbie designed the structure as a rectangular field that was wider than standard NFL stadiums. This choice allowed for easier conversion to baseball and soccer configurations later. The first row of seats sat far from the sideline compared to other venues like Soldier Field. That distance created a less intimate atmosphere for football fans during the early years.
The venue opened as Joe Robbie Stadium on the 16th of August 1987. Wayne Huizenga gained control of the property in the early 1990s. He sold naming rights to Pro Player, the sports apparel division of Fruit of the Loom. The stadium became Pro Player Park on the 26th of August 1996. It changed again to Pro Player Stadium before the 1996 season ended. Fruit of the Loom filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1999. The brand liquidated in 2001 but the name persisted until January 2005. Stephen M. Ross acquired 95% of the stadium by February 2008. He partnered with Jimmy Buffett to rename it Land Shark Stadium on the 8th of May 2009. Sun Life Financial took over the rights on the 20th of January 2010. The team announced in August 2015 that they would not renew the deal. Hard Rock Cafe International purchased the rights on the 17th of August 2016 for $250 million over 18 years.
The first regular season NFL game played there occurred on the 11th of October 1987. A 42, 0 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs marked the opening during a players strike. The Dolphins hosted their first Monday Night Football game on the 7th of December 1987 against the New York Jets. They lost an overtime thriller to the Buffalo Bills on the 25th of October 1987. The venue has hosted eight playoff games including the 1992 AFC Championship Game. The Miami Hurricanes began playing there in 2008 after moving from the Orange Bowl. A 25-year contract runs through 2033. The stadium hosted the 2013 BCS National Championship Game between Alabama and Notre Dame with 80,120 fans present. It also served as home field for the Florida Atlantic Owls from 2001 to 2002. Stephen Ross successfully petitioned the NFL to start September home games at or after 4 pm due to oppressive heat.
The Florida Marlins began play at the facility on the 5th of April 1993. They defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6, 3 in that inaugural game. The team drew over three million people in their first season. They won World Series titles in 1997 and 2003. Despite these successes, the stadium was never a true multi-purpose venue. Most seats pointed toward center field where the 50-yard line existed during football games. Fans in the left-field upper deck could not see game action except on replay boards. Temperatures frequently reached well above 90 degrees Fahrenheit during summer day games. The Marlins played most home games at night to avoid the tropical heat. Attendance dropped to crowds of 5,000 or fewer when the team was not contending. Players admitted they could not wait to go on the road due to poor playing conditions. The franchise moved to LoanDepot Park in 2012.
Six Super Bowls have been hosted at this venue including XXIII, XXIX, XXXIII, XLI, XLIV, and LIV. The 22nd of January 1989 game saw the San Francisco 49ers defeat the Cincinnati Bengals 20, 16 with 75,597 spectators. Heavy rains marred Super Bowl XLI in 2007 when the Indianapolis Colts beat the Chicago Bears 29, 17. An estimated 30% of lower-level seating remained empty during the second half. The 2nd of February 2020 event featured the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31, 20 before 62,417 fans. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira performed during the halftime show for that match. The stadium also hosted the 2010 Pro Bowl. Stephen Ross opened an open-air canopy in 2016 to protect fans from elements though it left the field exposed.
Rod Stewart headlined a concert on the 3rd of July 1988 as part of Happy Birthday America '88. Paul McCartney played two shows in April 1990 drawing 95,410 attendees total. Guns N' Roses performed their Use Your Illusion Tour here in December 1991. Pink Floyd held a Division Bell Tour stop on the 30th of March 1994 with 54,738 people present.
