  Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The match was played on the 13th of July at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Chelsea became the inaugural world champions under a 32-team format unlike anything the competition had previously attempted. A total of $1 billion in prize money was distributed among all 32 participating clubs. The competition was also the first major FIFA tournament since the 1978 World Cup to finish without a penalty shootout. For the winning club, the prize reached up to $125 million. The competition was the 21st edition of the FIFA Club World Cup. Its scale and structure bore little resemblance to the tournament that had run annually for more than two decades before it.

• 2. Building the New Format

  FIFA president Gianni Infantino first suggested expanding the Club World Cup to 32 teams in late 2016. He proposed moving the tournament to a June-July window to make it more attractive to broadcasters and sponsors. In late 2017, FIFA discussed a 24-team format to be held every four years from 2021. That format was explicitly designed to replace the FIFA Confederations Cup.

  At the March 2019 FIFA Council meeting in Miami, the 32-team structure and its June-July schedule were formally confirmed. China was appointed as host in October 2019. The 2021 edition was then canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and China's role fell away with it.

  On the 23rd of June 2023, FIFA confirmed the United States would host the 2025 tournament. The announcement positioned the event as a prelude to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which the US was also preparing to stage. Alongside the expanded Club World Cup, FIFA introduced a separate annual event, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, modeled on the previous seven-team structure.

  On the 14th of February 2023, the FIFA Council approved the slot allocation. UEFA received the most spots with twelve. CONMEBOL was allocated six, while the AFC, CAF, and CONCACAF each received four. The OFC and the host nation received one each.

  Manchester City entered as the technical title holders, having won the final annual edition in 2023. They were eliminated in the round of 16 by Al-Hilal.

• 3. The Trophy and Spectacle

  Tiffany & Co. created the newly designed trophy for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. It was made from pure 24-karat gold and drew inspiration from pioneering maps, the periodic table, astronomy, and the Voyager Golden Record. Laser-engraved details covered its surface, including a world map and the names of all 211 FIFA member associations. Inscriptions appeared in 13 languages, including braille. The trophy weighed approximately 5 kg and was valued at between €200,000 and $230,000.

  United States president Donald Trump kept the original in the Oval Office. Chelsea received an identical replica.

  French Montana and Swae Lee headlined the opening ceremony at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Singers Vikina and Richaelio also performed. The ceremony took place before the opening match between Al Ahly and Inter Miami.

  Italian singer Gala's song "Freed from Desire" served as the tournament's official audio signature. A remake of Queen's "We Will Rock You" by rapper Pitbull and producer RedOne also numbered among the official songs. Pitbull had previously performed the 2014 FIFA World Cup official song. RedOne had produced the 2022 tournament's official album.

  Gala's song became a cultural phenomenon well beyond any official role. Spotify reported a rise of over 13 percent in daily average listening globally during late June 2025. In Brazil, the song saw a rise of over 850 percent compared to the same period in 2024. A 450 percent rise occurred in the first half of June alone.

  DAZN acquired global broadcasting rights for €1 billion in December 2024 and streamed all matches free of charge. In some regions, coverage was sublicensed to linear television broadcasters.

• 4. Disputes Before Kickoff

  FIFPRO, the global players' union representing players from 66 associations, raised concerns about player welfare and fixture congestion. The World Leagues Forum, representing 47 professional leagues, shared those objections. La Liga voiced opposition and threatened legal action. In May 2024, FIFPRO and the World Leagues Forum sent FIFA a letter demanding rescheduling and reform of the international match calendar. On the 13th of June 2024, the English Professional Footballers' Association and France's equivalent body filed a legal claim at the Business Court in Brussels.

  Mexican clubs Pachuca and León both qualified for the tournament under common ownership. Both were controlled by Grupo Pachuca. FIFA regulations prohibited any club from owning shares in or exerting influence over another club competing in the same tournament. Costa Rican club Alajuelense argued it was next in line under CONCACAF rankings and requested that one of the two clubs be disqualified. On the 4th of February 2025, Alajuelense appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against FIFA, Pachuca, and León. On March 21, FIFA announced León had been removed. Los Angeles FC secured the vacated spot with a 2-1 extra time win over América on May 31 at BMO Stadium.

  Some seats for the final were listed at over $2,200 under dynamic pricing. FIFA adjusted prices in February 2025, bringing them to around $140 for the semifinals and $300 for the final. A 10 percent cancellation fee on exchanges also drew attention.

  On the 10th of June 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection announced their involvement in security during the tournament's first round. FIFA president Gianni Infantino defended the increased security presence. He cited the 2024 Copa América final at the same venue, where large numbers of supporters had stormed the gates to gain entry. Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa was initially denied a US visa due to a 2018 robbery case. The decision was reversed and Costa was issued a special 26-day visa to participate in the tournament.

• 5. Continental Rivalry

  In twelve direct matches between UEFA and CONMEBOL clubs, European teams registered six wins. South American clubs won three, with three matches drawn. The on-field results intensified a debate about the balance of global football, one that coaching staff entered publicly.

  PSG coach Luis Enrique stated that South Americans had no need to compare themselves with Europeans. He pointed to the widespread recruitment of South American players by European clubs as evidence of shared global standing. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola argued that European fans should not be surprised by wins from South American clubs. He described such results as a reflection of genuine global quality. Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca raised fixture congestion as a factor affecting European fitness. A journalist challenged that view, noting South American teams had played even more matches during the same period.

  Google Trends recorded the highest search volume for the Brazilian domestic league since 2020. The spike reflected the attention generated by Brazilian clubs' performances in the tournament.

  Thunderstorm stoppages across the tournament ranged from around 46 minutes to nearly two hours. FIFA safety protocols required pauses whenever lightning was detected near stadiums. High temperatures posed additional challenges, particularly for midday kickoffs. Severe weather also contributed to flight delays and traffic congestion around venues, affecting teams, officials, and supporters.

  By early July, FIFA had recorded over 2 million tickets sold and average attendance of approximately 36,000 per match, a figure comparable to several leading European domestic leagues. Eleven fixtures surpassed 90 percent of stadium capacity. Fourteen matches attracted under 20,000 spectators, mostly at MLS venues.

• 6. Chelsea and the Awards

  Cole Palmer of Chelsea won the Golden Ball as the tournament's outstanding player. His teammate Moisés Caicedo received the Bronze Ball. PSG's Vitinha took the Silver Ball. Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez won the Golden Glove. PSG's Désiré Doué received the FIFA Young Player Award. Bayern Munich were awarded the FIFA Fair Play Trophy.

  Gonzalo García of Real Madrid won the top scorer award. The goal of the tournament went to Lucas Ribeiro of Mamelodi Sundowns for his goal against Borussia Dortmund. Shortlisted goals included a free kick by Lionel Messi against Porto, a goal from Kenan Yildiz against Al Ain, and an effort from João Pedro against Fluminense.

  The draw for the tournament had been held on the 5th of December 2024, at the Telemundo headquarters in Doral, Florida. The ceremony was led by Alessandro Del Piero. Chelsea had entered that draw in Pot 2 with a FIFA club ranking score of 79. PSG had been placed in Pot 1 with a score of 85. What those numbers implied about the final result was left to the 3-0 scoreline to answer.

  Two hundred and fifty million dollars was the target of a solidarity investment program tied to the 2025 Club World Cup prize pool. The funds were directed to club football worldwide, reaching organizations well beyond the 32 clubs that had competed in the United States that summer.
