  • J. R. R. Tolkien wrote the first draft of The Fall of Gondolin between 1916 and 1917, introducing a character named Glorfindel at that time. The name itself meant "Goldtress" because his hair was golden, a rare trait among the dark-haired Noldor elves. Tolkien read this story aloud to the Exeter College Essay Club in the spring of 1920, marking an early public moment for the character. Christopher Tolkien later confirmed that the meaning of the name had been present from the very beginning of the writing process. In the original drafts, Glorfindel served as a key figure during the siege of the Elven city of Gondolin by the Dark Lord Morgoth. Years later, when Tolkien began drafting The Fellowship of the Ring, he reused the same name for a different elf who appeared in the Third Age. Early notes for the Council of Elrond scene listed Glorfindel alongside Frodo, Gandalf, and Trotter before Legolas or Boromir were added to the group. By the final published version, Legolas took the role of the Elven representative, yet Glorfindel retained immense power. He remained strong enough to stand against the Nazgûl alone, which allowed him to guide Frodo to safety. As Tolkien's ideas evolved over decades, he eventually decided that both characters should be one and the same person.

  • Glorfindel was born around the time of the Years of the Trees in Valinor, though he followed King Turgon only because they shared kinship ties. During the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, he acted as one of Turgon's chief lieutenants overseeing the retreat of their forces. After fighting in the defense of Gondolin, he escaped with Tuor, Idril, Eärendil, and others through the Encircling Mountains above the city. An ambush by enemies including a Balrog occurred during this escape, where Glorfindel fought the monster to its death. The battle left him mortally wounded, but his body was recovered by the great eagle Thorondor and buried under a stone cairn. Yellow flowers grew from that burial site, and the story became an in-universe proverb describing great skill and courage in battle. His spirit passed to the halls of Mandos in Valinor after his physical death in the First Age. The Valar later sent him back to Middle-earth on a mission similar to that of the Istari who appeared thousands of years later. This return marked a unique exception to the usual fate of Elves, allowing him to re-enter the world after being purified of guilt.

  • In The Fellowship of the Ring, Glorfindel was sent by Elrond of Rivendell toward the path the Nazgûl were most likely to take. He set Frodo Baggins upon his horse Asfaloth and had the hobbit ride ahead to the other side of the Ford of Bruinen. At the Bridge of Mitheithel, he revealed himself as a mighty Elf-lord terrible in wrath while Frodo saw him as a shining figure. Though nearly captured, he managed to drive the Nazgûl into the nearby river with help from Strider and Frodo's companions. A wave of water resembling charging horses swept them away, an enchantment created by Elrond and Gandalf. While staying at Rivendell, Frodo sat in honor next to Elrond and Gandalf in the Hall of Fire among Glorfindel and his kinfolk. He participated in the Council of Elrond where he voiced caution about sending the Ring to Tom Bombadil. He suggested that the Ring be destroyed and that the Three Rings of the Elves be sacrificed to accomplish this quest. Later accounts show he led Elvish forces against Angmar in the Battle of Fornost alongside Eärnur, the future king of Gondor.

  • Alexander Lewis and Elizabeth Currie argued that Tolkien tied readers and critics in knots over whether there were one or two characters named Glorfindel. Don Anger speculated that Glorfindel's death in The Fall of Gondolin prevented Tolkien from making an explicit connection until the complete publication of The History of Middle-earth series by 1996. Edmund Wainwright noted that Glorfindel is the best example of a male Elf who embodies semi-divine aspects within The Lord of the Rings. Verlyn Flieger observed that Tolkien initially found reincarnation theologically problematic as a devout Catholic before concluding it was a biological dictum for his imaginary world. Elizabeth Whittingham cited correspondence from Catholic readers like Father Murray and Peter Hastings which prompted changes to the mythology. These revisions gradually moved the texts into closer alignment with Christianity while keeping reincarnation as a notable exception to later stances. Megan Fontenton described Glorfindel's role as shaman-like, serving as a medium between the spiritual Valinor and physical Middle-earth worlds. His previous battle with the Balrog served as an initiation to a shamanic trial and journey through the narrative structure.

  • Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated version gave Glorfindel's lines and role to Legolas instead of featuring him directly. Peter Jackson's 2001 live-action film transferred Glorfindel's rescue function to Arwen, who took Frodo to the Ford and summoned floodwaters to disperse the Nazgûl. A British musical stage adaptation running from June 2007 to July 2008 at Theatre Royal Drury Lane reimagined the character as a dark-haired elf-woman played by Alma Ferović. The 2015 film The Martian included a reference where NASA Director Teddy Sanders asked to be called Glorfindel during Project Elrond discussions. Writer Drew Goddard claimed this reference was his proudest moment in that film. These adaptations redistributed Glorfindel's narrative functions to other characters like Arwen or Legolas depending on the medium. The core story of rescuing Frodo remained central but shifted hands across different interpretations of Tolkien's work.

  • Glorfindel appears as a non-player character in the 2002 video game The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring voiced by Steve Staley. The 2006 real-time strategy game The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II featured him with silver-blond hair instead of golden-blond. He appeared on the box art of that game and served as one of the playable hero units of the Elvish faction riding Asfaloth. The Lord of the Rings Online included Glorfindel as another non-player character within its persistent world environment. A tabletop strategy battle game adaptation from Games Workshop offered two versions of Glorfindel clad either in armor or robes while riding Asfaloth. A version also appeared in the Lego Lord of the Rings video game available as downloadable content. These appearances cataloged the character across various franchises as both a playable unit and an NPC figure.
