Arwen
The name Arwen Undómiel means noble maiden in the ancient tongue of Sindarin. She was born into the House of Finwë, a lineage stretching back to the first kings of the Noldor. Her father Elrond ruled the sanctuary of Rivendell while her mother Celebrían was the daughter of Galadriel. This bloodline connected her directly to Tuor of Gondolin and King Turgon of the Noldor. Through both parents she carried the heritage of three great Elven houses. Her elder brothers were the twins Elladan and Elrohir who often accompanied their sister on journeys. The name Evenstar marked her as the most beautiful of the last generation of High Elves. She lived over two thousand seven hundred years before meeting Aragorn.
Aragorn met Arwen for the first time when he was twenty years old inside Rivendell. She had recently returned from Lothlórien where she lived with her grandmother Galadriel. Thirty years later they reunited at Cerin Amroth on a mound of grass and stone. They committed themselves to marriage upon that hill under the open sky. In making this choice Arwen gave up the immortality available to her as a daughter of Elrond. She agreed to remain in Middle-earth instead of travelling to the Undying Lands. One year after Aragorn died at age 2,901 she also passed away. Her death followed the path of her ancestor Lúthien who chose mortality for love.
J.R.R. Tolkien conceived the character of Elrond's daughter late in the writing process. Prior to this decision he considered having Aragorn marry Éowyn of Rohan. The History of Middle-earth documents pages 59 through 67 regarding these early drafts. Melissa Hatcher described the character as a symbol of the unattainable match for Aragorn. Carol Leibiger noted that her lack of involvement followed general Elvish patterns of retreating to safe havens. Nancy Enright argued that Arwen served as inspiration and motivation for Aragorn throughout the novel. Her inner power was subtly conveyed rather than displayed through conspicuous action.
Liv Tyler played Arwen in Peter Jackson's film trilogy with an expanded role compared to the book. She single-handedly rescued Frodo Baggins from Black Riders at the Fords of Bruinen using a sudden flood. During this flight she wielded the sword Hadhafang which belonged to his grandmother Idril Celebrindal. Injured Aragorn was revived by a vision of Arwen who kissed him and asked the Valar to protect him. Elrond took the reforged sword Andúril to Aragorn instead of Arwen sending a banner. Some scenes showed Arwen fighting in Helm's Deep before writers deleted them with Liv Tyler's approval. Janet Brennan Croft commented that Jackson made Arwen passive while denying her independence of mind.
Arwen was held to be the reappearance in likeness of Lúthien fairest of all Elves called Nightingale. The story of Beren and Lúthien resembled her own union with a mortal man. Nancy Enright wrote that like Christ she is an immortal choosing mortality out of love for Aragorn. Her marriage united the lines of Half-elven and preserved bloodlines of three kings of High Elves. The union also connected Maiarin blood through Melian Queen of Doriath. This symbolic interpretation suggests she carries the weight of ancient Elven history within her choice.
Sonia Fraser voiced Arwen in the 1981 BBC radio serialisation of The Lord of the Rings. Rosalie Craig played the role in London during 2007 singing Prologue and three musical numbers including Star of Eärendil. Rita Ramnani portrayed Arwen in the 2009 fan film The Hunt for Gollum. A board game used a rendition by conceptual designer John Howe inspired by Isabelle Adjani. The films introduced a jewelled pendant called Evenstar which appeared in Marion Zimmer Bradley's short story The Jewel of Arwen. Critics debated whether these adaptations remained faithful to Tolkien's original writings despite significant changes.
