Gene Simmons
Gene Simmons was born Chaim Witz in Haifa, Israel, on the 25th of August 1949. He grew up to become the bassist and co-lead singer of the hard rock band Kiss, where he plays a stage character called the Demon. Rock stardom has a reputation for excess, yet Simmons says he has never been drunk or high on a substance in his life. The only slip came when he mistakenly ate pot brownies. He credits his mother for the rule. In his words, "I'm my mother's only child … I had no right to harm my mother. Life did that enough". What had life done to her? How does a boy from a dirt-poor household in Israel end up breathing fire on a stage? And how did one bass player turn a band into a business while collecting apologies and a lifetime ban along the way?
On the 5th of May 1945, Flóra Kovács was liberated from the Mauthausen camp in Austria. She had been held in Nazi concentration camps since November 1944. Born in 1925 in Jánd, in eastern Hungary, she and her brother Larry Klein were the only members of her family to survive the Holocaust.
In 1946 she married Ferenc "Feri" Yehiel Witz, a carpenter. The couple moved to Mandatory Palestine the following year.
Their son spent his early childhood in Tirat Carmel, in a practicing Jewish household. He has described the family as "dirt poor", getting by on rationed bread and milk. At the age of seven he and a friend picked wild fruit and sold it at the roadside.
When he was eight, his parents divorced, and he and his mother settled in Queens, New York City. His father stayed in Israel and later had another son and three daughters. In America the boy became Gene Klein. At nine he briefly attended a Jewish religious school, Yeshiva Torah Vodaas, before moving to a public school. He graduated from Newtown High School. From 1968 to 1970 he studied at Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York. In 1970 he earned a BA in Education from Richmond College on Staten Island.
Vogue magazine gave Klein one of his first jobs. A proficient typist, he worked as an assistant to one of its editors. He also spent six months teaching sixth grade on the Upper West Side.
The name Gene Simmons honors the rockabilly singer Jumpin' Gene Simmons. In other interviews, Klein said the actress Jean Simmons inspired it. He later gave a song on the 1976 album Destroyer the title of her 1946 film Great Expectations.
The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show set his direction. In his words, "There is no way I'd be doing what I do now if it wasn't for the Beatles. I was watching The Ed Sullivan Show and I saw them. Those skinny little boys, kind of androgynous, with long hair like girls. It blew me away that these four boys from the middle of nowhere could make that music."
His first band, Lynx, later renamed the Missing Links, formed in 1964-65 when he was 15. He broke it up to start the Long Island Sounds, a pun on the body of water Long Island Sound. That group included Steve Coronel, a future Wicked Lester guitarist, and Alan Stuart Graf, a future lawyer and author. Graf talked Simmons into buying his first bass, because the band needed a bass player. After Graf left in 1967, the group became The Love Bag. Another band, Bullfrog Bheer, lasted until 1970 with shifting line-ups. It recorded home demos, including a song called Leeta, which later appeared on a Kiss box set.
In the early 1970s, Simmons, Coronel and Brooke Ostrander of their 1969 band Coffee formed a group first called Rainbow and later Wicked Lester. Stanley Eisen, now known as Paul Stanley, joined them. The band recorded one album, which was never released in full. Simmons and Stanley disliked the group's sound and look, and they tried to fire the other members. When that met resistance, the two quit instead. They walked away from a record deal with Epic Records to build what they called the "ultimate rock band". Their new band still needed a drummer.
The year 1973 saw Kiss take shape, beginning with a newspaper-style ad placed by George Peter John Criscuola, known as Peter Criss. Criss was playing clubs in Brooklyn at the time. Simmons and Stanley answered the ad, and the three started out as a trio. Around then, Criss and Simmons also appeared on an unreleased album by Captain Sanity, alongside members of Criss's previous band, Chelsea.
An ad in The Village Voice brought in the fourth member. Paul Frehley, better known as Ace Frehley, responded to the call for a lead guitar player and soon joined. Kiss released its self-titled debut album in February 1974.
The band split its duties on stage and off. Stanley took the role of lead performer on stage. Simmons became the driving force behind an extensive Kiss merchandising franchise.
In 1983, Kiss's popularity was starting to fade. The band answered with a bold move and took off its iconic makeup to reinvent itself. The change paid off and sparked a renewed wave of success that carried through the 1990s.
The band hosted its own fan conventions in 1995. Fan feedback about reuniting the original members influenced the highly successful 1996-1997 Alive Worldwide reunion tour. In 1998, Kiss released the album Psycho Circus.
The original lineup then dissolved again. Tommy Thayer replaced Frehley on lead guitar. Eric Singer, who had performed with Kiss from 1991 through 1996, replaced Criss on drums. Simmons and Stanley remained constant members until the band's dissolution in 2023.
The makeup that Simmons wore through all of this had a surprising origin, and it was drawn on a page.
The eye section of the Demon makeup came from the wing design of the comic book character Black Bolt. It is a small borrowing that sits at the center of a face seen by Kiss fans around the world.
Simmons is also well known for his long tongue. He often sticks it out during performances, and it became one of his most recognizable trademarks. As the Demon he breathes fire and spits fake blood, building a dark and theatrical image. His trademark stalking moves were inspired by the creature Ymir from the movie 20 Million Miles to Earth.
Some media outlets have reported that his tongue measures up to seven inches and that he insured it for $1 million. Simmons has never publicly confirmed or denied either claim.
The flames earned a place in record books in 2020. At the KISS 2020 Goodbye concert, Simmons won two Guinness World Records. One was for the highest flame projection in a music concert, and the other was for the most flame projections launched simultaneously in a music concert.
The Demon has escaped the stage into games. In Tony Hawk's Underground, Simmons is a playable character, unlocked by completing the story mode on Normal difficulty. The Demon is playable in Kiss: Psycho Circus: The Nightmare Child. In the 2010 game Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Simmons narrates the main storyline and voices the character Demigod of Rock in cutscenes. The Pokémon Obstagoon, introduced in Pokémon Sword and Shield, resembles the Demon.
Most Kiss songs split the lead vocals between Simmons and rhythm guitarist Paul Stanley. Simmons has a baritone voice. His lead vocals include "God of Thunder", "Rock and Roll All Nite", "Deuce", "A World Without Heroes", "I Love It Loud", "Calling Dr. Love", "Unholy" and "Christine Sixteen". "You Wanted the Best" was his first lead vocal.
Simmons prefers what he calls "memorable simplicity" over technical complexity. He says he never wanted to be a bass virtuoso. "I don't like show-offs in music. I'm much more attracted to things that are memorable. It's part of the joy of music for me." He admires the skill of jazz musicians but doubts their reach: "You can be a jazz player and be respected by musicians, but the rest of the world doesn't care."
In 1978, Simmons appeared with Kiss in the NBC television movie Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Acting came slowly after that. In 1981 he auditioned at ABC for a Marcy Carsey-produced show called Grotus and was offered his own TV show. He declined it because the pay was lower than what he earned with Kiss.
His feature film debut came in the 1984 Michael Crichton thriller Runaway, starring Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes and Kirstie Alley. In 1985 he appeared in the season premiere of the second season of Miami Vice, in an episode titled "The Prodigal Son". In 1986 he and Ozzy Osbourne spoofed "Satanic panic" in the heavy metal horror film Trick or Treat, starring Tony Fields. In 1987 he appeared in the Gary Sherman action film Wanted: Dead or Alive, starring Rutger Hauer.
Simmons also created and executive produced the animated series My Dad the Rock Star with the Canadian company Nelvana, which aired on Nickelodeon. In 2004 he played a mob drug kingpin in two episodes of Third Watch, titled "Higher Calling" and "Monsters".
In 2005 he created two reality shows. Mr. Romance was a six-episode comedy series on Oxygen. Rock School had him teaching rock music to prep school students at Christ's Hospital School in Great Britain.
The 2006 reality show Gene Simmons Family Jewels followed his life with his wife, Shannon Tweed, and their two children, Nick and Sophie. It aired for seven seasons on the A&E network.
Simmons kept finding new screen roles. In 2010 he played a psychic at the Mystic Journey Bookstore in Venice, California, on the hidden camera series I Get That a Lot. In 2014 he guest-starred as himself in an episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. In 2022 he became a judge on the talent show Yoshiki Superstar Project X, produced by the Japanese musician and composer Yoshiki. In October 2024 he was a guest judge for "Hair Metal Night" on Dancing with the Stars.
In March 2015, Simmons founded the film production company Erebus Pictures. Its first announced project was the horror-thriller Armed Response. That year he and Kiss also lent their voices, and a new song, to the animated film Scooby-Doo! and Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery.
In May 2023, Gary Hamilton of Arclight Films announced a partnership with Simmons called Simmons/Hamilton Productions. The company aims to produce 25 films over five years, focusing on action, thriller and franchise titles. Its first title is Deep Water, directed by the Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin.
Music was a business for him as well. In 1988, Simmons formed his own record label, Simmons Records, distributed by RCA Records. Its first acquisition was House of Lords. The label also released albums by Kobra and the Lotus, Silent Rage and Gypsy Rose, along with Simmons's own solo releases.
As a producer, Simmons worked on WOW by Wendy O. Williams in 1984. He produced The Right to Rock in 1985 and The Final Frontier in 1986 by Keel, and Nasty Nasty in 1986 by Black 'n Blue. In 1987 he produced the self-titled album by Ezo. In 1989 he managed the recording side of Liza Minnelli's entry into mainstream pop. In 1990 he was executive producer of the self-titled album by Doro.
Not every venture lasted. In 2002, Simmons launched the men's lifestyle magazine Gene Simmons' Tongue, which ran for five issues before it was discontinued. From 2006 to 2008 he held a marketing and publicity role with the Indy Racing League.
In August 2013, Simmons, Paul Stanley and the manager Doc McGhee joined the ownership group of the Los Angeles Kiss arena football team. The team played home games at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and ceased operations in 2016.
In 2017 Simmons launched "The Vault", a compilation of all his major works, priced at $2,000. In 2018 he was named "Chief Evangelist Officer" of the Canadian cannabis company Invictus MD Strategies, in which he also holds a large investment stake.
In 1983, Simmons began dating the Canadian actress and former Playboy Playmate Shannon Tweed. They did not marry until 28 years later. For more than 20 of those years he joked that the two were "happily unmarried". He often paraphrased Groucho Marx: "Marriage is an institution, and I don't want to live in an institution".
They wed on the 1st of October 2011 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. They have two children, Nick, born on the 22nd of January 1989, and Sophie, born on the 7th of July 1992. The family lives in Los Angeles.
Tweed was not his only famous partner. Simmons formerly had live-in relationships with Cher and Diana Ross. He has said he fell in love with Ross while he was dating Cher.
In 2010, Simmons claimed that the number of women he had slept with stood at 5,000. He said he kept a Polaroid picture of each, with the hotel key from where it happened. A 2012 episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels shows Tweed finding a key to the lockboxes holding the photos. She confronts him, and he eventually expresses remorse and agrees to dispose of them. The episode ends with Tweed setting the collection on fire.
Simmons speaks Hungarian, German, English and Hebrew, and some Japanese.
His teenage interests ran to science fiction and comic books. He published several science-fiction fanzines, including Id, Cosmos, Tinderbox, Sci-Fi Showcase, Mantis and Adventure. Cosmos eventually merged with another fanzine, Stilletto, to become Cosmos-Stilletto and then Faun. He also contributed to the fanzines BeABohema and Sirruish. By 1977 he had left that scene behind, writing in a letter to the editor of Janus, "I haven't been active in fandom for about five years".
On the 7th of October 2025, Simmons was reportedly hospitalized after a car accident in Malibu, California. He had lost consciousness while driving.
In March 2011, Simmons returned to his birth country, Israel, for a visit he called a "life changing experience". He said he still feels Israeli: "I'm Israeli. I'm a stranger in America. I'm an outsider". There he met his half-brother Kobi and his triplet half-sisters Drora, Sharon and Ogenia. He also visited the grave of his estranged father.
Simmons described himself as an ardent supporter of Israel. At a press conference there he spoke in both Hebrew and English, and he called artists who refuse to perform in Israel for political reasons "stupid". Kiss played Tel Aviv for the first time in 2015. During the 2006 Lebanon War, he sent a televised message in English and Hebrew to a seriously wounded Israeli soldier, calling him his "hero". On the 6th of November 2015 he attended a Friends of the Israel Defense Forces gala in Beverly Hills that raised more than $31 million. In a 2024 interview with Sky News Australia, he called the Gaza War protests "well intentioned but misinformed".
His American politics have shifted over the years. He supported the foreign policy of the George W. Bush administration and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He explained his loyalty to the United States this way: "I wasn't born here. But I have a love for this country and its people that knows no bounds. I will forever be grateful to America for going into World War II, when it had nothing to gain, in a country that was far away... and rescued my mother from the Nazi German concentration camps."
In 2010, Simmons said he regretted voting for Barack Obama, and he criticized the 2009 health care reforms. After Obama's 2011 Middle East speech, he told CNBC the president was gravely misguided on Israel's borders. He also called the United Nations "the most pathetic body on the face of the earth". In an April 2012 interview he endorsed the Republican Mitt Romney: "America should be in business and it should be run by a businessman."
By August 2021 he was speaking against Donald Trump's first administration. He said that "we all lie to some extent" but that what happened in the previous four years was beyond anything he had imagined. On the 10th of November 2021, he called people who refused the COVID-19 vaccine "an enemy" and "evil".
A 2004 interview in Melbourne, Australia, produced his most criticized remarks about religion. Speaking about Islamic extremists, Simmons called Islam a "vile culture" and claimed that Muslim women had to walk behind their husbands and could not be educated or own houses. The Muslim media personality Susan Carland argued his stereotyping was inaccurate. Simmons later clarified on his website that he had been talking specifically about extremists.
On the 2nd of February 2002, Simmons clashed with Terry Gross on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air. He paraphrased a lyric from the Who's 1981 song "You Better You Bet" to say that anyone welcoming him must accept his crude side too. Gross replied, "That's a really obnoxious thing to say". Simmons refused to let NPR post the interview online, though it appears in print in Gross's book All I Did Was Ask. In a 2014 interview with HuffPost, he said he was upset by her "holier-than-thou" attitude, including her calling his band "the Kiss".
In July 2014, Simmons made comments in an interview with Songfacts that encouraged people with depression to kill themselves. Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe, who had suffered from depression, criticized him. The radio stations Triple M and Winnipeg's Power 97 said they would pull all Kiss songs from their lineups in protest. Simmons later clarified his comments and apologized.
In 2018, Simmons settled a sexual assault lawsuit brought by an unnamed radio personality. She accused him of touching her inappropriately and of turning standard interview questions into sexual innuendo. He denied the allegations despite the settlement. In 2019, his former bandmate Ace Frehley stated that Simmons had groped Frehley's wife.
On the 16th of November 2017, Simmons appeared on Fox & Friends to promote a new book. Afterward he burst uninvited into a staff meeting, unbuttoning his shirt and telling jokes. On the 17th of November, Fox News banned him for life from its programs and its properties. He then issued a statement saying he had "a tremendous amount of respect" for the company's workers and apologizing for "unintentionally offending" any staff.
File sharing drew his sharpest anger. In 2007, Simmons spoke out against music piracy and called for file-sharers to be sued. A year later he threatened more lawsuits and said he would withhold new recordings if the sharing continued. In 2010, Anonymous staged a DDoS attack on his website. Simmons hit back with provocative comments once the site returned, and Anonymous took it down again. In September 2014 he put his case this way: "The death of rock was not a natural death. Rock did not die of old age. It was murdered".
More than 140 children receive sponsorship from Simmons through ChildFund International, which he supports as an advocate. During the run of Gene Simmons Family Jewels he traveled to Zambia to visit several of them. He said the trip "was a stark reminder that life doesn't treat everyone the same".
On the 9th of November 2013, his family received the MEND Humanitarian Award at the annual gala of Mending Kids International. Mel Gibson presented it. In his speech, Simmons described his difficult childhood in Israel in a bullet-riddled house. He recalled his mother's excitement the day a CARE box arrived.
Simmons also helped found "The Children Matter", a collaboration with the charity MATTER that works to give children around the world access to health care. He is an honorary board member of Little Kids Rock, a national nonprofit that restores music education in disadvantaged U.S. public schools. Family Jewels visited a Little Kids Rock classroom, and he decorated a guitar for auction with his son Nick. During the COVID-19 pandemic he urged people to wear face masks and follow social distancing rules.
On the 28th of January 2011, the city of Dallas, Texas, saluted his work with the Wounded Warrior Project and gave him the key to the city. Simmons and Tweed spent four days visiting the U.S. Army base at Fort Hood. They then hosted the Aces & Angels Celebrity Salute to the Troops charity event in Dallas on the 2nd of February. It was held in Fair Park, and the street in front of the Centennial building was temporarily renamed "Gene Simmons Boulevard". Cameras filmed all of it for Family Jewels.
On the 15th of June 2011, Winnipeg, Manitoba, also gave him the key to the city. In 2012, Revolver magazine awarded him its Golden God award. In 2014, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Kiss. On the 15th of December 2014, the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, the Royal Artistic Circle of Barcelona, gave him its Golden Medal.
In 2013, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History accepted an autographed Gene Simmons Axe bass, donated by John Upshaw Downs Jr. The museum wrote that his story deserved to be preserved. It described him as an immigrant and the son of a Holocaust survivor who used creative vision and entrepreneurial acumen to make a significant impact on American popular culture.
On the 6th of December 2025, Simmons, Paul Stanley, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley were all named recipients of the 2025 Kennedy Center Honors. Frehley had died the previous October.
