Dante (Devil May Cry)
Dante, the silver-haired, red-coated demon hunter at the center of Capcom's Devil May Cry series, was almost something else entirely. He was nearly a Western policeman. His early name was Tony Redgrave, a nod to the Resident Evil character Chris Redfield. And the game he would anchor was originally conceived as an entry in the Resident Evil franchise itself. None of that survived. What did survive became one of the most recognizable characters in video game history, named after a 14th-century Italian poet, carrying twin pistols that never need reloading, and built around a personality that series creator Hideki Kamiya described as someone you would want to go out drinking with. How did a near-miss spin-off character become so enduring? And why did one redesign, decades into the franchise, provoke such fierce backlash that it nearly tore the fan base apart?
Hideki Kamiya drew the story of Devil May Cry from Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy, a decision that gave the character both his name and, eventually, a structural mirror in his third adventure. Kamiya's concept of a "cool and stylish" man was filtered through Buichi Terasawa's Cobra manga, which supplied the personality blueprint. To signal that stylishness visually, Kamiya dressed the character in a long coat and made him a non-smoker; he saw that choice as simply "more cool". Dante wears red, the traditional Japanese color for a heroic figure, a deliberate contrast to Leon S. Kennedy from Resident Evil 2, a character Kamiya himself created who wears blue.
Character designer Makoto Tsuchibayashi built the 3D model partly from a staff member's own clothing, while Yuichiro Hiraki, who joined Capcom after designing King of Fighters characters Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami at SNK in the late 1990s, handled motion capture and helped shape Dante's fighting style. Hiraki initially saw the character as a nihilistic anti-hero with a dark side, based on Tsuchibayashi's early concept art. Kamiya later steered him toward something more animated, giving Hiraki the impression Dante would be an incorrigible joke-cracker. The twin handguns, Ebony and Ivory, carry an inscription: "For Tony Redgrave, By.45 Art Warks", the old alias preserved in the weapons themselves. Dante's Devil Trigger forms were designed by Kazuma Kaneko of Atlus, work the Capcom staff admired so much that a wallpaper featuring those forms was designed as a tribute to the Japanese show Super Sentai.
Kamiya's guiding words for Dante were "composure" and "ambiance". He wanted someone who would not show off but would instead "pull some ridiculous, mischievous joke" to endear himself to an audience. When asked about Dante's bond with the character Trish, Kamiya said it was superior to love. He did not write the first two Devil May Cry novels himself, but he recognized author Shinya Goikeda's depiction of Dante as close to his own.
Devil May Cry 2 from 2003 stripped away that goofy ease and replaced it with brooding seriousness. Designer Daigo Ikeno, who was responsible for Dante's look in that game and its sequel, attempted to make the character more handsome, but later expressed disappointment with how little Dante did in the game. The staff believed Dante's stylishness survived the personality change because of his movements, even as his voice went quiet. When Devil May Cry 3 arrived in 2005 as a prequel, writer Bingo Morihashi described his goal as a departure from Kamiya's style and more of a team effort. Morihashi admitted that despite watching Dante across three games, he still had trouble fully understanding him. The design for that younger Dante drew from the Japanese entertainment group Johnnys, with more skin visible under his jacket to suit the character's more reckless youth.
In Devil May Cry 4, producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said the team deliberately made Dante seem significantly more powerful than the new protagonist Nero, to establish the gap between a veteran and a rookie. The staff were wary of repeating the backlash that had greeted Konami's Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty in 2001, which drew heavy criticism for its protagonist switch. One of the clearest expressions of the difference between Dante and Nero came in a single scene: Nero remained tense during a confrontation with the antagonist Agnus, while Dante mocked Agnus with a musical taunt before the boss fight.
Drew Coombs voiced Dante in the original 2001 game, describing it as his first video game role. Coombs was told the project was a Resident Evil spin-off and was given a script and basic storyboards while his movements were recorded. He did not recognize himself in the character's actions; his goal, as he put it, was simply to "bring Dante alive" with his voice.
Reuben Langdon took over the role starting with Devil May Cry 3 and has voiced and performed motion capture for the character since 2005. He auditioned four times before being chosen, and he was not aware of the series' popularity when he began. He later described the work as "one of the most difficult, frustrating and yet rewarding character of anyone I've ever played", crediting cast director Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Yutaka Maseba from ADR Production for helping him through it. GamesRadar+, Anime News Network, and IGN all cited Langdon as the character's best voice actor, with IGN finding him more effective than Japanese voice actor Toshiyuki Morikawa because of his familiarity with the material.
For Devil May Cry 5, Langdon found the initial script dialogue "horrible" and rewrote portions of it alongside translator Mike McNamara and Itsuno's input. He collaborated with Dan Southworth and Johnny Yong Bosch to sharpen the English translation. One scene required Dante to parody a Michael Jackson dance, which Langdon could not execute in motion capture; a stunt double named Shibata performed it instead. For Japanese releases, Toshiyuki Morikawa has voiced the character, describing Dante's appeal as rooted in his courage and his indifference to money.
DmC: Devil May Cry arrived in 2013 as a reboot, with Dante redesigned by Italian concept artist Alessandro Taini, known as Talexi. Capcom's staff told the Ninja Theory team that the character needed a new look to attract a younger demographic. The result drew from Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight. His coat was shorter, his hair black and cropped, and his background reframed as Nephilim, half-angel and half-demon, with a childhood explanation for his white hair woven into the origin story.
Motohide Eshiro acknowledged before release that this Dante was completely different from previous versions and that criticism was expected. Design director Tameem Antoniades said the original Dante's attire would read as comical to modern players and that the new character was built around rebellion as a theme. He compared the new Dante unfavorably to Bayonetta in terms of style, saying her look was not what he wanted. Antoniades said that Dante would not be changed because the character fit the game's setting, and that he personally liked the result.
Fan reaction was mainly negative. Reuben Langdon said he was disappointed after having looked forward to the project. He stated that Hideaki Itsuno was troubled enough by the changes to consider leaving Capcom, though Itsuno himself later went on record saying he had genuinely wanted to make a sequel to DmC. Itsuno described the development of Devil May Cry 5 as a product of both camps, those who had worked on DmC and those who had not, with the shared goal of taking what they had learned from that game forward. Hideki Kamiya, commenting on the reboot's character, said he missed the original but hoped players would adjust. Some critics argued that the fan backlash focused too narrowly on the character's look rather than his personality, which several writers found close to the original.
The 2011 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition listed Dante among the best video game characters. Game Informer called him "one of the most bad-ass characters around" at the time of his introduction, specifically noting his contrast with Resident Evil's aesthetic. Meristation credited Kamiya's design and characterization as among the main reasons for Dante's status in hack and slash games. IGN described him as "a dark antihero kind of guy even a down-in-the-dumps, disgruntled teenager would love."
In a poll hosted by Capcom in 2024, Dante was voted the company's most popular character. His image was used by Sony in Japan alongside Toshiyuki Morikawa's voice to promote pizza, and Capcom produced limited-edition jacket replicas for Japanese gamers during the Devil May Cry 5 campaign. The limited editions of Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition were packaged in a pizza box, a reference to the character's in-game habit of eating pizza. A Mii Fighter costume based on Dante was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the 29th of June 2021, having been speculated for some time after Capcom released Nintendo Switch ports in 2019 and 2020, though the reveal was met with disappointment from fans who had wanted him as a full playable fighter.
The anime series prompted comparisons to the Deadpool character from Marvel Comics, with critics divided on whether the playful tone served or undercut the character. Reviewer Lucas Simons wrote that across two seasons of the Netflix series, Dante was "treated like a ragdoll at best, or worse, sidelined by all other characters", raising the question of what the show would be without its main character at center. In the 2025 animated series from Studio Mir, Dante is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, the same actor who played Nero in the games, continuing the franchise's long history of revisiting and reshaping a character who, despite every transformation, kept drawing audiences back.
