Chris Weitz
Christopher John Weitz was born on the 30th of November 1969 in New York City. His mother Susan Kohner worked as an actress while his father John Weitz served as a Berlin-born novelist and menswear designer. The family history stretches back to Czech-born agent Paul Kohner and Mexican actress Lupita Tovar on his maternal side. Tovar starred in Santa, Mexico's first talkie released in 1932 alongside a Spanish language version of Drácula. His paternal grandparents escaped Nazi Germany before his grandfather operated a successful textile manufacturing business. The family maintained close ties with writer Christopher Isherwood and actress Marlene Dietrich during that era.
Weitz grew up in a nonreligious household despite having a Jewish father and Catholic grandmother. He described himself later as a lapsed Catholic crypto-Buddhist. As a young boy he attended Allen-Stevenson School alongside his brother Paul. Both boys joined the Knickerbocker Greys youth marching corps which has existed since 1881. At age 14 Weitz boarded at St Paul's School in London where his father had studied previously. He eventually graduated from Trinity College Cambridge with a degree in English.
The film career began for Chris Weitz through co-writing duties on the animated feature Antz released in 1998. He followed this work by contributing to various sitcoms including Off Centre and the 1998 revival of Fantasy Island. In 1999 he directed American Pie together with his brother Paul while Adam Herz wrote the screenplay. The film became a major box office success and spawned two theatrical sequels where Weitz served as executive producer.
Their next project arrived in 2001 when they co-directed Down to Earth starring Chris Rock. The brothers then created About a Boy based on Nick Hornby's book in 2002. Hugh Grant starred in the film originally set up at New Line Cinema with Robert De Niro producing. They insisted the main character remain British despite initial plans to make him American. Inspiration came from the 1960 film The Apartment. Their adaptation earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside a BAFTA nomination.
New Line Cinema hired Weitz to direct their adaptation of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series in 2003. He approached the studio with an unsolicited 40-page treatment before receiving an invitation from Peter Jackson to visit King Kong sets. Weitz announced his departure from the project in 2005 citing technical challenges and fear of criticism from fans. British director Anand Tucker replaced him but left over creative differences in 2006. Weitz returned after receiving a letter from Pullman asking him to reconsider.
Post-production conflicts arose when New Line replaced Weitz's editor and made final cuts against his vision. The studio trimmed the originally unhappy ending while removing references to religion or religious ideas. Weyz stated that darkness and threat at the story's conclusion disappeared because executives feared raising arms against the movie. The film released in 2007 with mixed reviews and U.S. grosses described as disappointing relative to its $180 million budget. International box office reached approximately $250 million bringing worldwide totals to $372,234,864. Sequels never materialized due to economic recession and Catholic Church protests before being rebooted as a television series in 2019.
Weitz directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon which opened in November 2009 one year after the first installment. The film set records for biggest midnight opening domestically by grossing an estimated $26.3 million across 3,514 theaters. It surpassed Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince previously holding that record. Opening day domestic gross reached $72.7 million making it the biggest single-day opening in history ahead of The Dark Knight's $67.2 million tally.
This performance contributed to another record where top ten films combined for over $100 million in a single day. The opening weekend became third-highest in US domestic history with $142,839,137 while sixth-highest worldwide at $274.9 million total. With an estimated budget under $50 million the film became least expensive ever to open above $200 million globally. Over Thanksgiving weekend it grossed $42.5 million bringing totals to $66 million including Wednesday and Thursday sales. The movie earned $230.7 million in its first ten days adding $38 million more than the previous film's entire run. International grosses added roughly $85 million during that same holiday period reaching $473.7 million worldwide in just ten days.
Summit Entertainment released A Better Life in June 2011 written by Eric Eason about a Hispanic gardener searching for his stolen truck in Los Angeles. Weitz said working on this unusual production allowed him to explore his Mexican grandmother heritage while learning Spanish. The film received an Oscar nomination despite featuring almost entirely Hispanic cast members set within a Hispanic community. He collaborated with journalist Jose Antonio Vargas on four documentary shorts called Is This Alabama? examining effects of state anti-immigration legislation HB 56 from 2011.
Disney released Cinderella in theaters on the 13th of March 2015 with screenplay written by Weitz who studied versions from Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault alongside the 1950 animated original. He scripted Rogue One: A Star Wars Story released in 2016 replacing Gary Whitta while sharing writing duties with Tony Gilroy. Fox 2000 produced The Mountain Between Us in 2017 adapted from Charles Martin's novel with co-writer J. Mills Goodloe. Operation Finale arrived as a 2018 MGM historical drama thriller about Mossad teams capturing Adolf Eichmann starring Oscar Isaac and Ben Kingsley. Blumhouse horror thriller Afraid followed releasing the 30th of August 2024.
Weitz wrote The Young World beginning a young adult trilogy series in 2014 followed by The New Order in 2015 and The Revival in 2016. These stories follow teenagers surviving in a post-apocalyptic world where disease killed all adults over age 18. He used natural intelligence theories called Society of Mind created by Marvin Minsky to construct narratives loosely autobiographical about growing up in New York City.
Acting credits include lead role in Chuck & Buck directed by Mike White plus bland suburbanite portrayal in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Weitz married Cuban Mexican Mercedes Martinez at Burning Man festival with whom he has son Sebastian and daughter Athena. In March 2016 he signed two-year first look deal with Amazon Studios through production company Depth of Field established with brother Paul and producer Andrew Miano. The company planned potential trilogy films for Universal Pictures based on Michael Moorcock's Elric saga after meeting Moorcock himself in May 2007.
