Bones (studio)
Bones opened its doors in October 1998 within the Igusa district of Suginami, Tokyo. Three former Sunrise employees named Masahiko Minami, Hiroshi Osaka, and Toshihiro Kawamoto established the new company together. Their initial staff count stood at exactly eight people when they began operations. Minami selected the name Bones to reflect this small group size while expressing a desire to build something substantial. He described the eight founders as bones that needed flesh to become a complete body. This metaphor guided their early philosophy about growing from a skeletal structure into a full production house.
The studio suffered a significant blow on the 24th of September 2007 when co-founder Hiroshi Osaka passed away from cancer. He was only 44 years old during his battle with the disease. Osaka had previously designed characters for major titles like Mobile Suit Victory Gundam and The Mars Daybreak before joining Bones. Following his death, the board of directors expanded to include two new members. Makoto Watanabe joined the leadership team alongside Takahiro Komori. Komori remained with the studio since its inception and served as character designer for Angelic Layer and Darker than Black.
Bones divides its production work across six specialized sub-studios labeled A through F. Each unit operates under distinct producer leadership to manage different project types. Naoki Amano leads Studio A which handled Gosick and Wolf's Rain before moving to Gachiakuta. Tatsuya Saitō directs Studio B where Eureka Seven and Space Dandy were produced. Yoshihiro Oyabu manages Studio C responsible for Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater. Nobuhito Takemoto heads Studio D focusing on Bungo Stray Dogs since 2015. Studio E handles projects like Metallic Rouge while Studio F remains dedicated to an unknown upcoming venture as of 2024.
In October 2024 the company executed a major structural change by spinning off its film division. This new entity operates as a wholly owned subsidiary called Bones Film. All animation productions scheduled from 2025 onward now carry credits under this separate name. The move separates theatrical film development from standard television series operations within the parent organization. This restructuring allows the main studio to focus on ongoing television commitments while the subsidiary prepares future movie releases.
Critics and audiences have widely praised several key titles that defined the studio's reputation over two decades. The 2003 adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist ran for 51 episodes and featured a partially original storyline alongside source material. A second version titled Brotherhood aired from 2009 to 2010 with 64 episodes total. Mob Psycho 100 appeared across three seasons between 2016 and 2022 based on manga by One. Soul Eater concluded in 2008 after 51 episodes adapted from Atsushi Okubo's work. These shows established a pattern of high production values and strong character designs throughout their run.
The studio has maintained continuous output since 2000 across multiple formats including films, games, and music videos. Their first feature film Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door released in 2000 with a runtime of 115 minutes. Original net animations like A.I.C.O. -Incarnation- arrived on Netflix in 2018 while Super Crooks followed in 2021. Video game collaborations included Robot Alchemic Drive in November 2002 and Persona 4: Dancing All Night in June 2015. Music video projects such as the Pokémon Special GOTCHA! video appeared in September 2020 directed by Rie Matsumoto. This diverse catalog demonstrates their ability to adapt to changing media landscapes over twenty-five years.
