Daemons of the Shadow Realm
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is a Japanese manga by Hiromu Arakawa, and it opens with a pair of twins described as "born between day and night." Their names are Yuru and Asa. They come from a premodern village called Higashi, and a prophecy says they will wield great power. Yet the two grew up apart, in very different worlds. One of them has never seen the life the other knows. This story asks why they were separated and what the creatures called Daemons really are. It asks who wants the twins badly enough to kill for them. It also asks what happens when the siblings finally find each other, because the series says they must unite to save the world from destruction.
For centuries, Higashi Village has been cut off from what its residents call the "Lowlands," the modern world beyond its borders. Yuru grew up inside that isolation, preserving an Edo-period way of life. When he is a teenager, he learns that he once had a sister and was parted from her at a young age. Dera and Hana pull him out of the village during a massacre. His goals are blunt. He wants to find his sister and his parents, and he wants to learn why his sister's comrades killed adults from his village. He also wants revenge on them. Out in the modern world he behaves like a traveler from the past. Yet his advanced hunting skills let him work through complicated situations quickly.
Back in Higashi, the elder leader Yamaha cares for her village but is opportunistic, and she wants to use both twins. Her retainer Kyoka disagrees. She is Yamaha's childhood friend and hopes the twins can live ordinary lives. Her Daemons are a pair called Zashiki-Warashi, which use shadows to change their appearance and to attack.
The twins' father was Mine, a kind man and a great hunter. Their mother was Nagisa, an outsider from Okinawa Island who stumbled onto Higashi by accident and fell in love with him. Who killed the pair is an accusation the story saves for a very different place.
Asa embodies the Day, and she is the younger twin. She is a tall, masculine girl with a tough streak and a readiness for violence in critical moments. In private she is a reliable friend to Jin and Gabby. Her long separation from Yuru has left her with a pronounced brother complex. Her own Daemon is, for now, unknown.
The village never actually lost her in the way Yuru was told. Asa left Higashi at a young age with her parents. A complete double of her stayed behind in her place, with a more idealized personality and the ability to regenerate. After the opening events, this double is called False Asa, and she is later revealed to be Kiri.
Kiri is later taken from the village as a hostage together with a shy girl named Azami. Azami is one of the few survivors of an attack on Higashi led by Gabby. Gabby is a blonde teenager who is introduced as a cynical, cruel killer. Even so, she is shown never harming children, and she acts like any teenager around her friends. Her Daemon is Gabriel, shaped like a floating forehead with eyes. Her friends Jin and Asa both belong to a household with a very different attitude toward the twins.
Left and Right were once two statues standing in the settlement. Now Left is a tall, muscular woman reminiscent of an oni, with a phlegmatic temperament. Right is a large, muscular man who relishes battle and obeys his master's commands completely. Yuru commands both, as the elder twin who embodies the Night. Daemons always come in duos, and the manga treats the paired idea as tsugai.
The pairs are built on contrast. Torty and Bunbun are the Tortoise and Hare. Torty can crush targets under an adjustable weight, while Bunbun runs so fast that slow enemies cannot catch him. Yozakura can only exist at night or in the dark, and his other half Asagiri can only exist in daylight. The black and white pair Daifuku and Ohagi can combine into a giant beast with seemingly infinite storage space inside. Fujin and Raijin command wind and lightning.
Some pairs are stranger. Ai swallows anything she is asked to, and Makoto can reproduce an unlimited number of whatever Ai swallowed. Masochist is a deformed mass that speaks only to provoke blows, while Sadist is a small humanoid that can say hurtful things. Kodetsu, a striped orange cat, is tech-savvy from long years among humans, and his partner Jiro is a white dog with exceptional tracking skills. The Oshira are an ancient pair considered to be gods, a light-blue young woman riding a scarred horse of the same color.
The most unusual Daemon lives in Yomotsu Hirasaka, a border realm between the living and the dead. Only the twins can enter it, and only after they have died once. There resides Break, half of a pair, clad in white drapes. Break lets its master break anything they point at, whether physical or conceptual.
Dera first appears to be a middle-aged traveling merchant with slightly gray hair. In truth he belongs to a long line of skilled warriors, and his family sent him to protect Yuru. He can defeat a group of soldiers unarmed. His partner Hana wields two Daemons, Kodetsu and Jiro. To explain their travels, they pose as a married couple, with Hana as Dera's new young wife and Yuru's stepmother. She accepts the story reluctantly, since she dreams of Jason Statham as her ideal man.
The Kagemori clan is headed by Gonzo, whose kind appearance hides an authoritarian, self-serving nature. His Daemons are the Centimanus and the Uyamuya. His eldest son Hikaru is kind and overweight, and spends most of his time as a manga artist under a pen name. Hikaru later becomes the clan's head after Gonzo is killed by Misasagi. Another family head, Roei of the Tadera Family, is a fan of Hikaru's work. He covers his face with a scarf and glasses after an assailant disfigured it.
The Kagemori have a doctor, Sakurazawa, who dislikes treating the wounded despite her professionalism. They also have the Kuroya foster siblings as bodyguards. Natsuki is the oldest and most serious. Fuyuki is the calm second child, whose Daemon Whisper is a manuscript that gathers information about a person. Haruo is the youngest and fiercely loyal.
When mercenaries attacked the Kagemori estate to retrieve the twins, several of them ended up on the family's payroll. Makoto accepted Gonzo's offer to pay for her sick mother's treatment. Keiichi, who took the job to square a debt, was recruited as a foot soldier after Asa used Break to free his Daemons. One of the Kuroya siblings, however, is not what he seems.
Akio is the expressionless member of the Kuroya family, and he is secretly a spy from Nishino Village. His task is to kill Yuru and Asa once they are reunited. He was born unable to feel pain, though the story implies that his mother sealed that sense. His Daemons are the giants Yamakaze and Tanikaze.
That mother is Minase, a manipulative former priestess and the older twin of Yamaha. She holds part of the Seal ability, which she used to stop herself, her sister and Akio from aging. Her Daemon is a one-eyed bird.
Misasagi runs a Chinese restaurant called West Wind and wants the twins' power for himself. He is carefree but calculating, with several red tattoos. His formless Daemons are Heaven, a star that makes things rise, and Earth, a shadow that forces targets down. His neighbors include Daigo, a burly bearded man proud of his strength, and Nagitsuji, an apathetic man with a childlike appearance. Nagitsuji's parasitic Daemons are Sodom, placed in the user's heart, and Gomorrah, placed in the user's hand.
Ivan is a bloodthirsty assassin tied to the village, and the alleged murderer of Mine and Nagisa. His Daemons are Daikyo and Shokyo. Shokyo is a short sword that cuts out a space and lets him teleport. Daikyo is a long sword that steals vital energy and passes it to another. Anna, a seemingly ordinary high-school student, works for him as a cleaner. She is secretly jealous and has a crush on him, and her beetle Daemons Taro and Hime turn corpses into egg-laden meatballs.
In the August 2021 issue of Monthly Shōnen Gangan, Square Enix announced Arakawa's new series to mark the 20th anniversary of her earlier work, Fullmetal Alchemist (2001-10). Serialization began in the same magazine on the 10th of December 2021. The first collected volume followed on the 10th of June 2022. By the 12th of March 2026-12 volumes had been released.
In July 2022, Square Enix Manga & Books announced it had licensed the series for English publication. The first English volume was released on the 25th of April 2023.
The anime adaptation was announced during Crunchyroll's panel at Anime Expo in July 2025. Bones Film produced it. Nobuhiro Arai designed the characters and Kenichiro Suehiro composed the music. The series premiered on the 4th of April 2026 on Tokyo MX and other networks. It is scheduled to run for two consecutive cours. Vaundy performs the opening theme and Yama performs the ending theme. Crunchyroll streams it, and Muse Communication licensed it in Southeast Asia.
By March 2026, the manga had more than six million copies in circulation. The honors began with a ranking of 19th on Da Vinci magazine's 2022 "Book of the Year" list. In 2023 it ranked 15th among Takarajimasha's Kono Manga ga Sugoi! best manga for male readers, then climbed to second in the 2024 edition. Nationwide bookstore employees ranked it second in their 2023 recommended comics list and third in 2024.
The year 2023 was especially rewarding. The series won Rakuten Kobo's first ever E-book Manga Award in the "I Want to Read it Now! Featured Manga" category. It ranked second in the Next Manga Award for print manga. It also took the grand prize at the seventh Tsutaya Comic Award.
In 2024 it was nominated for the 17th Manga Taishō and placed second with 73 points. Screen Rant's Francesco Cacciatore had already named it one of the best new manga to debut in 2021, though only one chapter had appeared by year's end. He likened it to Koyoharu Gotouge's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, since both feature a brother and sister as protagonists. Carlyle Edmundson, also of Screen Rant, compared the Tsugai concept to the Stands in Hirohiko Araki's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Another 2024 nomination, for the 48th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category, kept the series in contention for one of the field's major prizes.
