Atlas F.C.
In a bar in Guadalajara, Mexico, during August 1916, Alfonso Cortina and his friend Juan José Lico Cortina made a decision that would alter Mexican football history. They gathered with Pedro Perico Orendain, Carlos Fernández del Valle, the three Orendain brothers, and Federico Collignon to establish a new team. These men had studied at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire, England, and their shared experience there shaped the club's identity. They chose the name Atlas after the Titan of Greek mythology who holds up the sky. The colors red and black were selected to mimic the uniform of Ampleforth College. Red represented the blood of St Lawrence while black symbolized his martyrdom. St Lawrence was also the patron saint chosen for both the college and the new football club. Occasionally fans hang a banner displaying the crest of Ampleforth College inside the stadium as a tribute to these origins.
Atlas FC claimed its first league title in the 1950, 51 season after winning twelve matches out of twenty-two played. This victory marked the beginning of a golden era spanning the late 1940s through the 1960s. The club won four Copa MX titles including victories in 1945, 46 and 1949, 50. A dramatic moment occurred when they lost 4, 0 against Tampico in 1953 leading to their first relegation from the top flight. They returned immediately the following season showing resilience despite early struggles. Ricardo La Volpe managed the team during the late 1990s with players like Rafael Márquez and Pavel Pardo. Despite reaching the Verano 1999 final, Atlas lost to Deportivo Toluca on penalties after a 5, 5 aggregate draw. On the 12th of December 2021, the club ended a seventy-year drought by defeating Club León via penalties 4, 3 at Estadio Jalisco. Just five months later on the 29th of May 2022, they secured back-to-back championships by beating Pachuca 3, 2 on aggregate.
The club's youth academy has produced numerous players who went on to represent the Mexico national football team. Names like Jared Borgetti, Daniel Osorno, José de Jesús Corona, Pável Pardo, Oswaldo Sánchez, Rafael Márquez, and Andrés Guardado emerged from this system. Many young players enter the academy knowing there is a strong possibility of promotion to the first team due to the club philosophy. This approach has allowed talent to flourish domestically and internationally over recent decades. The lower youth divisions have achieved many titles both within Mexico and abroad. Players such as Jorge Hernández, Mario Méndez, Miguel Zepeda, Juan Pablo Rodriguez, and Joel Herrera all came through these ranks. Jeremy Márquez, Diego Barbosa, and Edgar Ivan Pacheco are among others who benefited from the program. The academy remains famous for developing professional careers that extend beyond the club itself.
Estadio Jalisco was constructed on the 31st of January 1960 and serves as the home ground for Atlas FC. It stands as the third largest stadium in Mexico hosting historic matches including Pelé's Brazil in 1970. During the 1970 FIFA World Cup the venue hosted eight games including six group stage matches plus two quarter and semi-finals. The stadium returned to host nine games during
the 1986 FIFA World Cup with six group matches one round of sixteen game and two quarter and semi-finals. These events cemented its status as a landmark venue in Mexican football history. The capacity and design allow it to accommodate large crowds while maintaining an intimate atmosphere for supporters. Fans gather here regularly to witness matches that define the club's legacy across generations.
