  • José Andrés Guardado Hernández was born on the 28th of September 1986 in Guadalajara, Jalisco. He joined the youth system of Atlas at the age of seven and began his professional journey with the local side. His league debut occurred on the 20th of August 2005 during a match against C.F. Pachuca that ended in a 3, 2 home win for Atlas. Just weeks later on the 15th of October he scored his first goal against Tigres UANL in a 2, 1 away victory. The tournament concluded with him being voted best rookie by observers.

His second season brought even more recognition as he scored his first professional brace against Club América on the 19th of August 2006. Both goals were long-range shots from outside the box in a 2, 0 home victory. This performance led to back-to-back awards for best full-back in both Apertura and Clausura tournaments. Press speculation linked him to Serie A teams and Real Madrid before Deportivo de La Coruña moved quickly. An offer of €7 million for 75% of his rights was accepted on the 7th of July 2007 making him the most expensive Mexican player at that time.

  • Guardado officially joined Deportivo de La Coruña on the 24th of July 2007 receiving the number 18 shirt. He made his La Liga debut on the 26th of August in a 3, 0 loss to UD Almería. His first goal came on the 16th of September against Real Betis via what was described as a karate style finish from a long throw-in. Fans voted him the best player of 2008 halfway through his second year while coach Miguel Ángel Lotina called him key to their squad.

He reached his 100th La Liga appearance on the 15th of May 2011 during a scoreless draw at FC Barcelona becoming only the third Mexican to achieve this feat after Rafael Márquez and Hugo Sánchez. The Galician team eventually relegated to Segunda División after twenty years but Guardado contributed career-best numbers of 11 goals and 12 assists as they returned to the top level. He surpassed Juan Carlos Valerón as the highest provider of assists for the club before leaving Estadio Riazor on the 30th of June 2012.

  • Guardado made his first international appearance for Mexico on the 14th of December 2005 in a friendly match against Hungary. Four months later he represented his country at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany appearing in the round of 16 loss to Argentina. His first international goal came on the 28th of February 2007 in a friendly with Venezuela ending in a 3, 1 victory. He scored six times en route to winning the 2015 Gold Cup title including twice from the penalty spot in the semi-finals against Panama.

On the 19th of November 2022 he made his 178th appearance for Mexico during a friendly against Sweden surpassing Claudio Suárez for most caps in national history. He played his final match for the national team on the 15th of October 2024 in a farewell game against the United States where Mexico won 2, 0. The total count reached 180 appearances making him the most-capped player in Mexican football history while also placing him joint tenth on the all-time scorer list with 28 goals.

  • Guardado started his career as a winger at Atlas occasionally playing as a left-back but was mainly deployed in that position by Deportivo manager Miguel Ángel Lotina. When injuries hampered his speed later in his career he changed roles significantly. Under Miguel Herrera's improvisation in 2014 Guardado began to play as a defensive midfielder for the national team. At PSV Eindhoven manager Phillip Cocu facilitated this positional change allowing him to operate as a central midfielder with box-to-box and deep-lying playmaker qualities.

He took on more defensive duties over time while maintaining creative abilities like excellent vision and passing skills. His style became closer to the Iberian midfielder archetype focused on possession in the center of the field. He won the ball back with smart positioning instead of tackles then pushed it forward. This evolution allowed him to remain effective despite physical changes as he aged through his European stints.

  • Deportivo La Coruña secured the Segunda División title in 2011, 12 and the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008 under Guardado's tenure. He helped PSV win two Eredivisie titles in 2014, 15 and 2015, 16 along with two Johan Cruyff Shield victories. Real Betis awarded him a Copa del Rey trophy following their 2021, 22 campaign victory against Valencia. These club successes were matched by international honors including three CONCACAF Gold Cups in 2011, 2015, and 2019 plus the 2015 CONCACAF Cup.

Individual accolades included being named Mexican Primera División Best Rookie in Apertura 2005 and winning Fan's Player of the Year awards at Deportivo in both 2008 and 2011. He received the Tecate Premios Deportes Best Offensive Midfielder award in 2009 and was selected for the IFFHS CONCACAF Men's Team of All Time in 2021. His 180 caps stand as the highest number ever recorded for Mexico while his 28 goals place him among the nation's top scorers.

  • Guardado signed with Liga MX club León on the 18th of January 2024 marking his return to Mexico after leaving Real Betis. He made his debut coming on as a substitute and receiving the captain's armband in a 3, 2 victory over Santos Laguna on the 27th of January. On the 7th of November 2024 he announced his retirement from professional football but reversed that decision two months later intending to play in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Club León's disqualification meant his final match took place on the 11th of May 2025 during a Clausura quarter-final loss against Cruz Azul ending 2, 1. He officially retired after this match concluding a career that spanned nearly twenty years. The season ended shortly thereafter bringing closure to a journey that began in Guadalajara youth ranks and concluded in Mexican domestic competition. His legacy remains defined by longevity and adaptability across multiple continents and leagues.
