  Mitchell Wiggins and Marita Payne-Wiggins met as student athletes at Florida State University, a detail that explains a great deal about their son. Mitchell had played in the NBA; Marita had competed as a sprinter at the Olympic level, originally from Barbados. Andrew grew up in Vaughan, in the Thornhill area of Ontario, with five siblings: sisters Stephanie, Angelica and Taya, and brothers Nick and Mitchell Jr. The athletic inheritance ran through the whole family. Nick played college basketball at Vincennes University, Wabash Valley College and Wichita State University. Mitchell Jr. played at Hillsborough Community College and Southeastern University. Andrew began playing organized basketball at nine, joining an under-10 team in Toronto. By 13 he was dunking a basketball, and within a year he was generating enough force to bring down a glass backboard during a dunk on a community centre rim.   On the 7th of February 2013, a Sports Illustrated article criticized Canadian basketball and questioned Wiggins' work ethic. Later that same day, Wiggins scored 57 points in a 111-59 win over Marietta College. The response was wordless and emphatic. Wiggins had transferred to Huntington Prep School in Huntington, West Virginia, after two years at Vaughan Secondary School, where he had led his AAAA team to a 44-1 record and the Ontario provincial championship as a sophomore, scoring 25 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the title game amid chants of "Over-rated!" from the crowd. At Huntington, he averaged 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.7 blocks per game as a junior. A reclassification into the class of 2013 shuffled the national prospect rankings, and ESPN immediately moved him ahead of Jabari Parker to number one overall. By the end of the high school cycle, he had collected the 2013 Naismith Prep Player of the Year award, the 2013 Gatorade National Player of the Year title as the first Canadian player to earn that honor, and the Mr. Basketball USA designation.   Wiggins committed to Kansas on the 14th of May 2013, narrowing a list that had included Florida State, Kentucky and North Carolina. His freshman season produced averages of 17.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, along with 34.1% shooting from three-point range. On the 8th of March 2014, he scored 41 points against West Virginia, the highest single-game total by a Big 12 Conference freshman since Michael Beasley scored 44 against Baylor in 2008. On the 13th of January 2014, he recorded 17 points and 19 rebounds in a 77-70 victory over Iowa State, becoming only the second freshman in the previous 15 years to reach those numbers in a win against a ranked opponent, joining Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. He was named a second-team consensus All-American. He declared for the draft on the 31st of March 2014, after a single college season, and the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him first overall on the 26th of June 2014, making him the second Canadian picked at the top of the draft after Anthony Bennett had gone first overall to Cleveland one year earlier.

• 5. The Trade and the Timberwolves

  On the 23rd of August 2014, a three-team deal involving the Cavaliers, the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Philadelphia 76ers sent Wiggins to Minnesota without him ever playing a regular-season game for Cleveland. Only Chris Webber, following the 1993 draft, had previously been drafted first overall and then traded before playing a single game for the selecting team. In his NBA debut on the 29th of October 2014, Wiggins scored six points in a 105-101 season-opening loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. He earned Rookie of the Month honors in the Western Conference for each of the first two months of the season, scored 22 points to win the Rising Stars Challenge MVP on the 13th of February 2015, and was named NBA Rookie of the Year for the 2014-15 season on the 30th of April 2015.   On the 6th of February 2020, Wiggins was traded to the Golden State Warriors along with two draft picks in exchange for Jacob Evans, D'Angelo Russell and Omari Spellman. His first full Golden State season ended with no playoff appearance; the Warriors finished 15-50, the worst record in the league. Two years later, everything changed. On the 27th of January 2022, Wiggins was named a Western Conference starter for the 2022 NBA All-Star Game, his first All-Star selection. He was the first number one overall pick in the modern draft era, dating to 1966, to earn his first All-Star nod in his eighth season or later. K-pop star BamBam provided a significant social media push in the fan voting phase. In the 2022 NBA Finals, Wiggins averaged 18.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game against the Boston Celtics, finishing as the Warriors' leading rebounder and blocker and second-highest scorer. Game 4 brought a 17-point, 16-rebound double-double; Game 5, a 26-point, 13-rebound effort. Golden State won the series in six games. On the 15th of October 2022, he signed a four-year, $109 million extension to stay with the Warriors. On the 24th of March 2024, he became the first NBA player born in Canada to make 1,000 career three-pointers.

  Wiggins played in the 2010 FIBA Under-17 World Championship alongside Anthony Bennett, a future first overall pick who would later be his Timberwolves teammate, and both helped Canada win a bronze medal. In the 2012 FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship, Wiggins led the junior national team in scoring at 15.2 points per game along with 7.6 rebounds per game, earning another bronze. At the senior level, he helped Canada win the bronze at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship, leading the team at 15.1 points per game and earning All-Tournament Team honors. On the 6th of February 2025, a five-team trade sent Wiggins to the Miami Heat, with Jimmy Butler heading to the Warriors.
