In 2012, Amazon acquired the British company Evi, founded in 2005 by computer scientist William Tunstall-Pedoe. This acquisition provided the question-to-answer system that would become a core component of Alexa. Two years later, in 2013, Amazon purchased Ivona, a Polish speech synthesizer inspired by the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. The text-to-speech model from Ivona merged with Evi's logic to create the foundation for the voice assistant. On the 6th of November 2014, Amazon officially announced Alexa alongside the Echo smart speaker. Developers chose the name Alexa because it contains a hard consonant with the letter X, which helps recognition systems identify the word with higher precision. They stated the name was also reminiscent of the Library of Alexandria, a connection used previously by Amazon Alexa Internet.
Hardware Evolution And Device Lineup
The first device to feature Alexa was the Amazon Echo, developed by Amazon Lab126. Subsequent models included the Echo Dot, Echo Studio, and Amazon Tap speakers. By January 2019, Amazon's devices team had sold over 100 million Alexa-enabled devices globally. In November 2018, Amazon opened its first Alexa-themed pop-up shop inside Toronto's Eaton Centre to showcase home automation products. The company began selling devices at Amazon Books and Whole Foods Market locations as well as through mall-based pop-ups throughout the United States. In December 2018, Alexa was integrated into the Anki Vector robot, marking the only home robot with advanced technology at that time. As of 2018, interaction capabilities were available in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, and Hindi. Canada received support for both English and French, including a Quebec accent.
