  • Ali Larter, born Alison Elizabeth Larter on the 28th of February 1976, once played a woman who did not exist. In November 1996, Esquire magazine put her on its cover as Allegra Coleman, billed as the movies' next dream girl. The article invented a whole life for its star. Allegra was said to be involved with David Schwimmer. Quentin Tarantino had supposedly broken up with Mira Sorvino to date her. Woody Allen had supposedly overhauled a film just to give her a starring role. None of it was true, yet Esquire received hundreds of phone calls about the non-existent Coleman. How does a fabricated starlet turn into a working actress? What did the real person behind the hoax do once the joke was over? And why do fans of horror films, superhero television and video game adaptations all know her face?

  • Cherry Hill, New Jersey, is where Larter was born, to a realtor named Margaret Walker and a trucking executive named Danforth Larter. She attended Carusi Middle School and then Cherry Hill High School West. Her parents later moved to Allentown, Pennsylvania. By her own account, Larter was a tomboy until she turned 13.

At 14, a modeling scout spotted her on the street and asked her to star in a Philadelphia Phillies commercial. That commercial led to a contract with the prestigious Ford Modeling Agency in Manhattan. Australia, Italy and Japan then replaced her senior year of high school. She was simply too busy modeling to finish it. At 17 she lived in Japan for a time, and her mother accompanied her everywhere until she turned 18.

Italy is also where she met another model with acting ambitions, Amy Smart. Larter said the two "became instant friends". Smart was still a close friend years later, and she was among the guests at Larter's wedding.

  • Suddenly Susan, the NBC series starring Brooke Shields, gave Larter her first professional acting job in 1997, in an episode called "The Ways and Means". Another NBC show, the short-lived Chicago Sons, came that same year. Appearances followed on Dawson's Creek at The WB, Chicago Hope at CBS and Just Shoot Me! at NBC.

After the Esquire cover appeared, morning television shows phoned Larter for interviews. Looking back on that moment, she said: "When the door opens for you in Hollywood, you need to run with it. You know?" The cover also led directly to her part in Varsity Blues.

Varsity Blues, released in 1999, was her film debut. It reunited her with Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek and with Amy Smart, who had talked her into auditioning. Larter played Darcy Sears, a love interest for Lance Harbor, played by Paul Walker. The film earned $53 million at the domestic box office. In the same year she took supporting parts in two teen comedies, playing Amber in Giving It Up and Dulcie in Drive Me Crazy.

One image from Varsity Blues outlasted the plot. Darcy appears covered by nothing but whipped cream, and the scene became a media favorite. On MTV's Jersey Shore, a character referred to it as the "Varsity Blues outfit".

  • House on Haunted Hill, a 1999 remake, was Larter's first horror film. It follows a group of strangers invited to a party at an abandoned asylum, and she played Sara Wolfe. The budget was around $20 million. Critics panned it, yet it earned $15 million on its opening weekend and over $40 million overall.

Final Destination arrived in 2000 and made her a name in the genre. Larter played Clear Rivers, one of the main characters. Devon Sawa and Kerr Smith co-starred. Several teenagers survive a plane crash, only to be stalked and killed by death itself. The film made $112 million by the end of its theatrical run.

In 2003 she came back for Final Destination 2. She told IGN: "When New Line asked me to come back, I thought it was great. They showed me the script and let me have some input, and it was really terrific." The sequel made $90 million worldwide, with a mixed critical reception. MSN eventually acknowledged her as a scream queen because of such roles.

Resident Evil: Extinction, in 2007, paired her with Milla Jovovich. Larter played Claire Redfield, a heroine from the video games. In the film, Claire leads a convoy of zombie apocalypse survivors toward Alaska in search of a safe haven. Filming took her to Mexicali, Mexico, from May to late July, and her hair was dyed a light red. Larter described Claire as "incredibly strong, patient". Despite negative reviews, the film made $147 million worldwide.

The supernatural thriller The Diabolical premiered in 2015 at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. Larter played Madison, a single mother who battles evil forces in her house. A Los Angeles Times critic found her character underdeveloped. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter came out in 2016, with Claire joining Alice and the Red Queen, played by Ever Anderson, to save the remnants of humanity. It grossed over $312 million worldwide, and it remains Larter's biggest box office success.

  • Tim Kring, creator of the NBC series Heroes, remembered Larter's audition clearly. "Ali read for the part and just owned it from the second she walked in," he told the Chicago Tribune. "It was a very impressive audition." Larter was living in Los Angeles when she tried out.

Her first character was Niki Sanders, a wife, mother and former internet stripper from Las Vegas. Niki had superhuman strength and suffered from dissociative identity disorder. Her alternate personalities went by the names Jessica and Niki.

In the third and fourth seasons, Larter played a new character, Tracy Strauss. Tracy could freeze objects and, later, transform her body into water. Across the show's run from 2006 to 2010, Larter appeared in 55 episodes as a main cast member.

The awards listings tie her to Heroes repeatedly. In 2007 she appears for the Saturn Awards in the category of best supporting actress on television. The Scream Awards that year list her under both Scream Queen and Sexiest Superhero. In 2008 she appears for the Gracie Allen Awards, and the Teen Choice Awards list her for Choice Action TV Actress in both 2008 and 2009.

  • Reese Witherspoon led Legally Blonde in 2001, and Larter played Brooke Taylor Windham, a widow accused of murdering her husband Hayworth. The comedy opened in first place with $20 million and finished with $141 million worldwide. Of that total, $96 million came from domestic markets, which makes it her highest-grossing film in that territory.

American Outlaws, a western comedy directed by Les Mayfield, cast her as Zerelda Mimms. Colin Farrell and Scott Caan co-starred. Critics and audiences were unkind, and it made only $13 million. She also appeared in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and in 2005 in the romantic comedy A Lot Like Love, starring Amanda Peet and Ashton Kutcher.

Marigold, released in August 2007, took her to the world of Bollywood. She played Marigold Lexington, an American actress who travels to India and gets caught up in the Bollywood scene. Salman Khan co-starred. Filming began in June 2004 in North India and London. Larter told the BBC the part let her face her fear of singing and dancing, since she had no professional training. She was paid a seven-figure salary.

Obsessed, in 2009, put her opposite Beyonce and Idris Elba. Larter played Lisa Sheridan, a co-worker whose aggressive interest threatens the marriage of Elba's character. She told Glam that she loved playing women who are "dark and vulnerable and sort of filled with a little bit of crazy emotion." Reviews of the film were mixed, but her own performance drew praise. Derek Malcolm of the Evening Standard wrote: "Larter as the pathological minx is the best thing about it."

Obsessed opened at number one with $28 million and finished with $68 million domestically, her second highest in North America. Larter and Beyonce were nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie: Rumble in 2009, and the film also earned an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Fight.

  • In spring 2002, Larter left Los Angeles for New York City. "I was too young and impressionable to handle the pressures of L.A.," she later said. In 2001 she had already been on the cover of Maxim and onstage in The Vagina Monologues in Manhattan. In New York she made herself available for independent films and theater.

The move was also about identity. She told Phillymag: "I took some time off to define myself outside the pressures of the industry. Part of me really needed to know if this is what I wanted to do with the rest of my life." In 2004 she was both an associate producer and the star of the thriller Three Way, playing Isobel Delano. While discussing Resident Evil: Extinction, she said she had many ideas and avenues she wanted to pursue as her career went on. Confess, an independent political thriller, came in 2005, the same year she returned to Los Angeles.

After Resident Evil: Afterlife, Larter went on hiatus in 2010 to focus on her family. Her comeback in 2014 began with Lovesick, a comedy that screened at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where she played Molly Kingston opposite Matt LeBlanc. She also played Keely, a fair-weather friend of Hilary Swank's character, in You're Not You, an independent drama about a woman with ALS. That film was directed by George C. Wolfe, and Emmy Rossum and Josh Duhamel co-starred.

Television filled the next years. TNT's Legends cast her as Crystal McGuire, an operative with the FBI's Deep Cover Operations. On Fox's Pitch she played Amelia Slater, in a series about Ginny Baker, portrayed by Kylie Bunbury, who becomes the first woman to play for a Major League Baseball team. It ran for one season in 2016. In 2019 and 2020 she played Grace Sawyer on ABC's The Rookie. In 2021 she led the neo-western The Last Victim, and The Man in the White Van premiered at the 2023 Newport Beach Film Festival before its release in December 2024.

In 2024, Taylor Sheridan's Landman brought her the role of Angela Norris, alongside Billy Bob Thornton. She describes Angela as a "cartoonish" funny caricature of a gold-digging ex-wife. The awards listing shows the cast of Landman under a 2026 Actor Award, for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series.

  • Maxim, FHM and Stuff all placed Larter on their lists, and in 2007 People named her to its Ten Best Dressed List as "The Newcomer". In 2009, Cosmopolitan named her its Fun Fearless Female of the year at a ceremony in Beverly Hills, California. Her magazine covers include Allure, Entertainment Weekly, Glamour, InStyle, Self, Seventeen and Shape, along with several editions of Cosmopolitan.

In June 2010, Larter joined thousands of delegates from 130 countries at the United Nations conference Women Deliver in Washington, D.C. In 2013 she and her husband hosted The Art of Elysium Gala, and they received the Spirit of Elysium Award in January 2014. In September 2013 she also published a cookbook, Kitchen Revelry: A Year of Festive Menus from My Home to Yours. As of April 2017, her films had grossed over $1.31 billion worldwide.

Hayes MacArthur is the husband. She met him on the set of National Lampoon's Homo Erectus, and they became engaged in December 2007. In a Cosmopolitan interview that year she said: "I told my boyfriend after three weeks that I wanted to marry him and that we could do it tomorrow." They married on the 1st of August 2009 at his parents' estate in Kennebunkport, Maine.

In 2012 the couple bought a three-story home in the Hollywood Hills for $2.9 million. During the COVID-19 pandemic they moved to Sun Valley, Idaho. On the 20th of July 2010 Larter announced that they were expecting their first child, and on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon in September she said it was a boy. Their son was born in 2010. A daughter followed in 2015. As of 2013, the household also included two dogs, a German Shepherd named Jackpot and a Wheaten terrier named Ella.

On the 10th of November 2025, on Live with Kelly and Mark, Larter spoke about the importance of working with Higher Ground of Sun Valley, Idaho. Her father served in the U.S. Army and was deployed to Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
