  • Reese Witherspoon walked into an open casting call in 1991 intending to read for a bit part. She left with the lead in The Man in the Moon, playing Dani Trant, a 14-year-old country girl in Louisiana. Thirty years later, in 2021, Forbes named her the highest-paid actress in the world. By 2023 the same magazine counted her among the wealthiest celebrities in the United States, with an estimated net worth of $440 million. Between those two moments sits one of the more unusual careers in modern film and television. It includes comedies that critics disliked and audiences loved, a long stretch when almost nothing worked, and a decision to stop waiting for good parts and start building them. How does a girl raised in the South become both a star and a studio owner? Why would an actress once among the best paid in Hollywood spend years on the wrong side of the box office? And what does a monthly book pick have to do with any of it?

  • Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, is where Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon was born on the 22nd of March 1976. Her father was a medical doctor and a lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve. He kept a private practice as an otolaryngologist until 2012. Her mother, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Witherspoon, born Reese, holds a PhD in pediatric nursing and taught nursing at Vanderbilt University. Her parents separated in 1996 but remain legally married.

Witherspoon has claimed descent from John Witherspoon, the Scottish-born man who signed the United States Declaration of Independence. Genealogists from the Society of the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence have not verified the claim.

She calls her childhood a "definitive Southern upbringing," and she was raised Episcopalian. In her telling, it gave her "a sense of family and tradition." It also taught her about "being conscientious about people's feelings, being polite, being responsible, and never taking for granted what you have in your life." Faith has stayed with her. She attends church services twice weekly and has said, "I believe deeply that there's a higher power."

At age seven, a florist chose her as a model for its television ads. That experience pushed her into acting lessons. At age 11 she took first place in the Ten-State Talent Fair.

School came easily. She got high grades and described herself as "a big dork who loved reading loads of books." Of bookstores she said, "I get crazy in a bookstore. It makes my heart beat hard because I want to buy everything." Her parents nicknamed her "Little Type A," and she has been called a "multi-achiever."

She attended middle school at Harding Academy. She then graduated from the all-girls Harpeth Hall School in Nashville, where she was a cheerleader. Stanford University came next, with English literature as her major. She left before graduating to pursue acting full time.

  • Roger Ebert singled out one moment in The Man in the Moon: "Her first kiss is one of the most perfect little scenes I've ever seen in a movie." The film is set in her native Louisiana, and her character falls for a 17-year-old neighbor. The performance earned a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Young Actress. Television followed that same year with Wildflower, in which she acted alongside Patricia Arquette. In 1992 she played a critically ill young girl in the television film Desperate Choices: To Save My Child.

Three credits arrived in 1993. She played the young wife Nonnie Parker in the CBS miniseries Return to Lonesome Dove, appeared in Disney's A Far Off Place, and took a minor part in Jack the Bear. That last role won her the Young Artist Award for Best Youth Actress Co-star. In 1994 she led S.F.W. as Wendy Pfister, under director Jefery Levy.

Two thrillers defined 1996. In Fear, she played Nicole Walker, a teenager who starts dating a man with obsessive tendencies, opposite Mark Wahlberg. In Freeway, she played Vanessa Lutz, a poor Los Angeles girl who meets a serial killer on the way to her grandmother's home in Stockton. Kiefer Sutherland and Brooke Shields co-starred. Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote, "Witherspoon, who does a Texas accent, is dazzling, utterly believable in one extreme situation after the other." She won Best Actress at the Cognac Police Film Festival. Looking back, she said that getting past a film that scared her to death made her feel she could try anything.

In 1998 she took major roles in Overnight Delivery, Pleasantville and Twilight. Pleasantville, with Tobey Maguire, sends two 1990s teenage siblings into a 1950s television series. She played Jennifer, the sister who cares mostly about appearances, relationships and popularity. The part earned her the Young Hollywood Award for Best Female Breakthrough Performance.

The year 1999 brought Cruel Intentions, a modern retelling of the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. She starred with Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe, playing Annette Hargrove, and the San Francisco Chronicle praised her in the least flashy role. Phillippe mattered off screen too. They met at her 21st birthday party in March 1997, became engaged in December 1998, and married on the 5th of June 1999 at Old Wide Awake Plantation in Hollywood, South Carolina. Their daughter Ava Elizabeth was born on the 9th of September 1999, and their son Deacon Reese followed on the 23rd of October 2003.

Also in 1999, Matthew Broderick starred opposite her in Election, based on Tom Perrotta's novel. As the driven Tracy Flick, Witherspoon earned her first Golden Globe and Independent Spirit Award nominations. The National Society of Film Critics and the Online Film Critics Society named her Best Actress, and Premiere ranked the performance among the 100 greatest film performances of all time. Director Alexander Payne said of her, "She's got that quality that men find attractive, while women would like to be her friend. But that's just the foundation. Nobody else is as funny or brings such charm to things. She can do anything."

The praise carried a cost. She struggled to find work afterward because of typecasting, and she said people assumed the extreme Tracy Flick was who she really was. She would audition and, as she put it, "I'd always be the second choice." In 2000 she played Patrick Bateman's trophy girlfriend in American Psycho and made a cameo as the mother of the Antichrist in Little Nicky. She also guest-starred in the sixth season of Friends as Jill, the sister of Rachel Green.

  • "She's from Beverly Hills, she's rich, she's in a sorority. She has a great boyfriend. Oh yeah, she gets dumped. Who cares? I still hate her." That was Witherspoon's first reaction to the script of Legally Blonde in 2001. The challenge, she said, was making Elle Woods someone you just can't hate. Elle is a fashion-merchandising major who enrolls at Harvard Law School to follow her ex-boyfriend. The film grossed US$96 million domestically, and the press began calling Witherspoon "the new Meg Ryan." Roger Ebert wrote that she "effortlessly animated this material with sunshine and quick wit." She received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress and an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

On the 29th of September 2001, she hosted Saturday Night Live. It was the first episode to air after the September 11 attacks.

In 2002 she voiced Greta Wolfcastle in The Simpsons episode "The Bart Wants What It Wants." She also played Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest, an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's play that earned her a Teen Choice Award nomination. Later that year came Sweet Home Alabama, in which she played the fashion designer Melanie Carmichael, opposite Josh Lucas and Patrick Dempsey. Melanie must return to Alabama to divorce a childhood sweetheart she has been separated from for seven years. Witherspoon called it a personal role, since it echoed her own move from Nashville to Los Angeles. It became her biggest live-action hit, with over $35 million in its opening weekend and over $127 million in the United States. Critics were unkind. The Christian Science Monitor wrote, "She is not the movie's main attraction, she is its only attraction."

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde followed in 2003, with Elle now a Harvard-educated lawyer trying to protect animals from cosmetics testing. Reviews were mostly negative, and USA Today found the film plodding while conceding that she still did a fine job. Even so, it took in over $39 million in its first five days and grossed $90 million in the United States. Witherspoon earned $15 million for the role, and she was one of Hollywood's consistently highest-paid actresses between 2002 and 2010.

Mira Nair directed her in Vanity Fair in 2004, adapted from the 19th-century novel. Witherspoon played Becky Sharp, a poor woman with a ruthless drive to win a place in society. She was pregnant during filming, and costumes were designed to hide it. She said she loved the luminosity pregnancy brought and found it gave her more to play with. Reviews were mixed. LA Weekly argued that she conveyed little of what is appalling and perversely attractive about Becky, and some critics thought she was miscast. The Los Angeles Times disagreed, calling Becky "a role Reese Witherspoon was born to play."

  • Reese Witherspoon never met June Carter Cash. The singer died while Witherspoon was filming Vanity Fair, which closed off any chance of studying her in person. Their story reached the screen in Walk the Line (2005), directed by James Mangold, with Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Witherspoon as his second wife.

She arrived at the part fresh from Just Like Heaven, a late-2004 romantic comedy with Mark Ruffalo. There she played Elizabeth Masterson, an ambitious young doctor left in a coma after a car accident.

The singing nearly broke her nerve. Witherspoon performed her own vocals, and the songs had to be sung in front of a live audience. She worried so much that she asked her lawyer to end her film contract. "That was the most challenging part of the role," she later recalled. "I'd never sung professionally." She then spent six months learning to sing, with help from the vocal coach Roger Love.

The work paid off. Roger Ebert said her performance added "boundless energy" to the film. She won Best Actress at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and the British Academy Film Awards, plus a Screen Actors Guild award. She and Phoenix also received a CMT Music Awards nomination for collaborative video of the year.

Witherspoon has spoken warmly about what drew her to the story. She liked that the film portrays a real marriage, with forbidden thoughts and fallibility, and says it is about compassion over the long haul. She also saw June as a woman ahead of her time, who traveled alone in a car full of famous musicians when that was not widely accepted. In Witherspoon's words, "She didn't try to comply to social convention, so I think that makes her a very modern woman."

Her next project came from her own production company, Type A Films. Penelope cast her as Annie, best friend of a girl with a family curse, played by Christina Ricci. Filming began in March 2006, and the film premiered at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival. It then sat unreleased until February 2008.

  • On the 30th of October 2006, Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe announced their separation. She filed for divorce on the 8th of November 2006, citing irreconcilable differences. The marriage officially ended on the 5th of October 2007, and final arrangements were settled on the 13th of June 2008. They shared joint custody of their two children. In a December 2014 interview, she tied the career trouble that followed to this split. She admitted to "kind of floundering career-wise" and spending a few years trying to feel better, since "you can't really be very creative when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs."

Rendition, released in October 2007, was her first film since Walk the Line. She played Isabella El-Ibrahim, the pregnant wife of a bombing suspect. It drew mixed reviews and disappointed at the Toronto festival. Claudia Puig of USA Today called her "surprisingly lifeless." Her co-star Jake Gyllenhaal became her partner from March 2007, but by multiple accounts they split in 2009 because the relationship left too little time for her children.

A comedy offered relief in 2008. Four Christmases, with Vince Vaughn, follows a couple trying to visit all four of their divorced parents in one day. Reviews were negative, yet it earned more than $120 million domestically and $157 million worldwide. In 2009 she voiced Susan Murphy, the lead in DreamWorks Animation's Monsters vs. Aliens, which grossed $381 million worldwide. She also co-produced Legally Blondes, a spin-off starring Milly and Becky Rosso.

Then came two years without a live-action film. She told Entertainment Weekly the break was unplanned. She simply read nothing she liked, and she noted that big movies about robots rarely have a part for a 34-year-old woman.

In February 2010, she was reported to be dating Jim Toth, a talent agent at Creative Artists Agency, where she is a client. They announced their engagement that December and married on the 26th of March 2011 at Libbey Ranch, her country estate in Ojai, California. Their son Tennessee James was born on the 27th of September 2012.

On screen, she returned with three romances in which her character is caught between two men. How Do You Know, directed by James L. Brooks, put her between Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. Its budget exceeded $100 million, and it earned only $48.7 million worldwide. The Los Angeles Times called it one of the year's biggest flops. Water for Elephants, adapted from Sara Gruen's novel, paired her with Christoph Waltz and Robert Pattinson in a circus setting, and she trained for it from March 2010. It opened on the 22nd of April 2011 to mixed reviews. This Means War, directed by McG, put her between Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. It opened in fifth place with $17.6 million, and The New York Times said it extended the box office cold streak for the Oscar-winning Ms. Witherspoon. She joked to MTV in 2012 that 2010-12 was her "love triangle period."

  • In March 2012, Witherspoon merged Type A Films with Bruna Papandrea's Make Movies banner to create Pacific Standard. Her aim was to produce projects with strong female leads, which she felt Hollywood lacked. The Type A name has its own story. The media assumed it came from her childhood nickname, but she told Interview magazine it began as a family in-joke, because at age seven she understood the medical difference between type A and type B personalities. She added that she wished she had named the company Dogfood Films or Fork. In 2016 she and Papandrea parted ways, and Witherspoon took full control. Pacific Standard later became a subsidiary of Hello Sunshine, a firm she co-owns with Otter Media, built around female-oriented stories.

Gillian Flynn's novel Gone Girl became a 2014 film with Witherspoon as a producer. That same year she produced and starred in Wild, as Cheryl Strayed on her 1,000-mile hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune wrote, "Witherspoon does the least acting of her career, and it works." Wild was seen as her comeback and earned her a second Academy Award nomination. In 2016 she voiced a character in the animated musical Sing and performed on its soundtrack. It was her first film to pass $200 million domestically and $600 million worldwide.

Television then became her main stage. Big Little Lies, a seven-part adaptation of a Liane Moriarty bestseller, was co-produced with Nicole Kidman and director Jean-Marc Vallée. It premiered on HBO on the 19th of February 2017 and ended on the 2nd of April. A second season arrived in June 2019. For this series, Witherspoon won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series.

The Morning Show on Apple TV+ premiered in November 2019, with Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell. When the COVID-19 pandemic halted production on season two, scripts were rewritten to reflect it. Filming resumed on the 19th of October 2020, and the season premiered in September 2021. Also in 2020, she produced and starred in Little Fires Everywhere on Hulu opposite Kerry Washington, adapted from Celeste Ng's 2017 novel. Daisy Jones & the Six, a miniseries from 2023, extended the pattern of adapting books to the screen.

In 2018 she began hosting Shine On with Reese on DirecTV, interviewing women about how they reached their ambitions. In 2023 she starred opposite Ashton Kutcher in Your Place or Mine for Netflix. In 2025 she starred in and produced the romantic comedy You're Cordially Invited for Amazon Prime Video.

In March 2023, she and Jim Toth announced their divorce after 11 years of marriage, a few days before their 12th anniversary. The divorce was finalized on the 3rd of August 2023. Afterward, she moved from Los Angeles to Nashville, Tennessee.

  • In May 2015, Witherspoon launched Draper James, a fashion and home-décor brand inspired by the American South. It is named for her grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon, whom she counts among her greatest influences. The brand began online and then opened its first shop in 2015 in her hometown of Nashville. In 2020, during the pandemic, it launched "Draper James Loves Teachers," which offered free dresses to teachers.

In March 2017, she became chief storyteller for Elizabeth Arden, Inc. Her job was to help shape the company's narrative through advertising and marketing, with a focus on women's true-life experiences.

Her advocacy work began well before that. In 2006, she joined a group of actresses on a Children's Defense Fund project in New Orleans to publicize the needs of Hurricane Katrina victims. There she helped open the city's first Freedom School and later called it an experience she would never forget. She now serves on the board of the Children's Defense Fund, and she is a longtime supporter of Save the Children. In 2007 she became the first Global Ambassador for Avon Products and honorary chair of the Avon Foundation, which supports women and focuses on breast cancer research and preventing domestic violence.

In October 2017, after the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse scandal, she revealed that a director had sexually assaulted her at age 16. She said she had "multiple experiences of harassment and sexual assault" throughout her career. In 2018 she joined about 300 actors, agents, writers and entertainment employees in creating the Time's Up initiative, which works against sexual harassment in the workplace.

The book club grew out of her Instagram account, where she posted photos of books she read. Reese's Book Club began in 2017 and picks a title each month with a woman at its center, from romance to thrillers. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, chosen in September 2018, became its most influential pick. Hello Sunshine adapted it into a 2022 feature film that was a box office hit that summer. In September 2018 she also published Whiskey in a Teacup, a lifestyle book inspired by her Southern upbringing.

The girl who loved bookstores has now written fiction herself. In 2025, Witherspoon co-authored her first novel, Gone Before Goodbye, with Harlan Coben.
