  • Idris Elba was born Idrissa Akuna Elba on the 6th of September 1972 in the London Borough of Hackney, the only child of a Sierra Leonean father who worked at the Ford Dagenham plant and a Ghanaian mother. He grew up in Hackney and East Ham, shortened his name to Idris while at school in Canning Town, and got his first taste of the entertainment world not on a stage but behind a pair of turntables helping his uncle with a wedding DJ business in 1986. A Prince's Trust grant of £1,500 opened the door to the National Youth Music Theatre. Between auditions, he fitted tyres, made cold calls, and worked night shifts at the same Ford plant where his father had spent his working life. By 2016 he had been named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World. What drove a Hackney kid from tyre-fitting to playing Nelson Mandela, to voicing Disney villains, to a professional kickboxing debut at London's York Hall? That question runs through everything that follows.

  • Elba's first screen appearance was in Crimewatch murder reconstructions, and in 1994 he appeared in a BBC children's drama called The Boot Street Band. His first significant series role came in 1995 on Bramwell, a medical drama set in 1890s England, where he played an African petty thief named Charlie Carter who had to care for a newborn daughter after losing his wife to childbirth. That same year he appeared as a gigolo in the "Sex" episode of Absolutely Fabulous, his first named role. He spent years accumulating supporting parts on British television, appearing on The Bill, The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, Family Affairs, Ultraviolet, and Dangerfield before deciding to move to New York City. After a supporting turn on a 2001 episode of Law and Order, Elba landed the role that would make his name in America. From 2002 to 2004, he portrayed Stringer Bell in the HBO drama series The Wire, a character widely considered one of the most compelling figures in the history of American television. He had also played Achilles in a stage production of Troilus and Cressida in New York City in 2001, signalling an ambition that extended well beyond the screen.

  • In September 2009, Elba signed a deal to star as the lead on the BBC television series Luther, which aired in May 2010. He played DCI John Luther across the series until 2019, and the role earned him the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film, which he accepted at the 69th Golden Globe Awards telecast on the 15th of January 2012. The same character generated four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie. Before Luther had even aired, Elba had appeared as Charles Miner in a six-episode story arc on NBC's The Office in 2009, a rival to the Dunder Mifflin regional manager played by Steve Carell. He also earned an Emmy nomination for a guest role in Showtime's comedy-drama series The Big C in 2011, and another for his lead in Apple TV's thriller Hijack in 2023. In January 2014, he confirmed that a film adaptation of Luther was in development, a project he had long wanted to bring to the cinema.

  • In February 2012, Elba confirmed he would portray Nelson Mandela in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, based on Mandela's autobiography. To prepare, he spent a night locked in a cell alone on Robben Island, where Mandela himself had been imprisoned. His performance earned a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama. Three years earlier, Beasts of No Nation, which premiered on Netflix in 2015, had shown a different range entirely. In that film Elba played a ruthless and charismatic warlord alongside Abraham Attah, earning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role as well as nominations from BAFTA and the Golden Globes. His film appearances across this period ranged widely: Prometheus in 2012 under Ridley Scott, Pacific Rim in 2013, Molly's Game in 2017 alongside Jessica Chastain, and the Fast and Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw in 2019, where he played the villain. He also played Roland Deschain in the Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower in 2017 and took the role of Macavity in Tom Hooper's film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats in 2019.

  • Elba entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe playing Heimdall in Kenneth Branagh's Thor in 2011, a role he reprised across six MCU films including Thor: The Dark World in 2013 and Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. On the DC side, he played mercenary Robert DuBois, also known as Bloodsport, in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad in 2021. His voice has populated a string of animated films. In 2016 alone he voiced Chief Bogo, the cape buffalo chief of police, in Disney's Zootopia alongside Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman; he voiced the villainous tiger Shere Khan in Jon Favreau's live-action The Jungle Book; and he voiced the sea lion Fluke in Pixar's Finding Dory alongside Ellen DeGeneres and Albert Brooks. He voiced Knuckles the Echidna starting with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022, reprised that character in a solo Paramount+ series and in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, both in 2024, and went on to play the prime minister of the United Kingdom in Heads of State and the president of the United States in A House of Dynamite in 2025.

  • In 1986, a teenage Elba began helping his uncle with a wedding DJ business, and within a year had started his own DJ company with friends. He worked nightclubs under the nickname "Big Driis" through his adolescence. He recorded a four-song EP called Big Man for Hevlar Records in 2006 and co-produced and performed on the intro to Jay-Z's album American Gangster in 2007. He DJed at the 2007 NBA All-Star parties at The Venetian and Ice House Lounge in Las Vegas. His six-song EP Kings Among Kings was announced in the August 2009 issue of Essence, and his EP High Class Problems Vol. 1 followed in the United Kingdom in February 2010, earning a Billboard Music Awards nomination among other prizes. In November 2015, he opened for Madonna during her Rebel Heart Tour in Berlin. He appeared on Taylor Swift's song "London Boy" in 2019, with the intro sampling a snippet from an interview he had given. On the 8th of January 2024, he released "Knives Down" featuring UK rapper DB Maz as part of his campaign against knife crime. In 2024, he launched the record label Sound International, inspired by his uncle's legendary 1980s London Sound System, with the goal of signing music from every country to highlight what he described as the global unity within house music.

  • In April 2009, the Prince's Trust, the UK youth charity that had funded Elba's early training with a £1,500 grant, appointed him as their anti-crime ambassador. In January 2016, Elba addressed the UK parliament on the lack of diversity on screen, saying: "Change is coming but it's taking its sweet time." He also worked alongside the UK Secretary of State for International Development Justine Greening in 2014 on efforts to eradicate Ebola from West Africa. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to drama. He served on the Board of Governors of the British Film Institute between 2018 and 2022. In 2024, he attended the UK government's inaugural knife crime summit alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, where his Elba Hope Foundation was part of a coalition aiming to halve knife crime over the next decade. In December 2022, Ravensbourne University London awarded him an honorary Doctor of Arts degree in recognition of his work championing diversity in the creative industries. Elba was knighted in the 2026 New Year Honours for services to young people, a recognition that traced a direct line back to the Prince's Trust grant that had first let him leave tyre-fitting behind.
