  • Ahmad Husein entered the world on the 1st of April 1925 inside a military hospital in Padang. His father Abdoel Kahar owned a pharmacy and raised eleven children alongside him. Seven boys and four girls filled their home with constant activity. The young boy attended Hollandsch-Inlandsche School Padang until he graduated in 1938. He then moved to Taman Siswa in Bukittinggi for further studies. That education ended when he completed his degree in 1941. The Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies arrived in 1943. Husein enrolled in Giyugun that same year as a native volunteer force member.

  • Japan surrendered in the Pacific War before long after the invasion began. Ahmad joined the People's Security Agency or BKR in Padang shortly thereafter. He actively recruited new members into this security organization during those turbulent months. His unit grew strong enough to become known as the Kuranji Tiger. This nickname marked him as a combat commander of the Padang Area. The Indonesian war of independence soon reshaped his entire military career. His unit reorganized into the Banteng Division to face Dutch forces directly. He fought against them during both the first and second Dutch police actions.

  • A visit to Bukittinggi brought Husein face to face with Sukarno himself. The meeting left him deeply disappointed by the central government's focus on Java. Development efforts seemed entirely absent from Sumatra despite its strategic importance. This regional neglect would fuel future rebellions across the archipelago. Colonel Ismail Lengah created the Banteng Council on the 20th of December 1956. The headquarters sat firmly within Medan while Husein commanded the fourth regiment. He held the rank of Bukit Barisan Territorial Command at that time. His appointment as governor of Central Sumatra followed quickly after these events.

  • A meeting took place in Dharmasraya Regency on the 9th of January 1958. Ahmad Husein's Banteng Council joined Maludin Simbolon's Elephant Council. They also united with Barlian's Garuda Council and Ventje Sumual's Manguni Council. These four groups banded together to form the Revolutionary Government of the Republic of Indonesia. This new entity stood as a direct rival to the Java-based Central government. President Sukarno led the nation alongside prime minister Djuanda Kartawidjaja. Husein was chosen as commander of this entire PRRI alliance structure. The group operated under Syafruddin Prawiranegara's leadership during their early days.

  • Husein led the PRRI in an alliance with D.J. Somba's Permesta forces. Their combined strength lasted until the movement fell apart in 1961. Government forces captured him during the final stages of that conflict. He remained incarcerated for several years following his arrest. Imprisonment continued until the fall of Sukarno in 1965 finally changed his fate. The long detention period removed him from active military command entirely. His absence left a power vacuum within the rebel ranks that never fully recovered.
