Ahmad Husein entered the world on the 1st of April 1925 inside a military hospital in Padang. His father Abdoel Kahar owned a pharmacy and raised eleven children alongside him.
The young boy attended Hollandsch-Inlandsche School Padang until he graduated in 1938. He then moved to Taman Siswa in Bukittinggi for further studies that ended when he completed his degree in 1941.
A visit to Bukittinggi brought Husein face to face with Sukarno himself and left him deeply disappointed by the central government's focus on Java. Development efforts seemed entirely absent from Sumatra despite its strategic importance which fueled future rebellions across the archipelago.
Ahmad Husein's Banteng Council joined Maludin Simbolon's Elephant Council, Barlian's Garuda Council, and Ventje Sumual's Manguni Council on the 9th of January 1958 in Dharmasraya Regency. These four groups banded together to form a direct rival entity to the Java-based Central government under Syafruddin Prawiranegara's leadership.
The combined strength of Husein's PRRI alliance with D.J. Somba's Permesta forces lasted until the movement fell apart in 1961. Government forces captured him during the final stages of that conflict and he remained incarcerated for several years following his arrest.
