  • On the 8th of July 2000, Victoria Beckham performed alone in public for the first time. The setting was London's Hyde Park, where a crowd of 100,000 had gathered for a Prince's Trust charity concert. She sang "Out of Your Mind", her first solo song. Until then she had always shared a stage with four other women. What followed was not a straight climb. Why did her pop ambitions stall within four years? How did a former pop star become an internationally known designer? And why does a label with such a high profile keep struggling to turn a profit?

  • Victoria Caroline Adams was born on the 17th of April 1974 at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex. She grew up in Goffs Oak, Hertfordshire, the eldest of three children. Her mother, Jacqueline, had worked as an insurance clerk and a hairdresser, and her father, Anthony, was an electronics engineer. Together they ran an electronics wholesale business, which gave Victoria, her sister Louise and her brother Christian a comfortable childhood.

In 1980, a viewing of the musical film Fame convinced her to pursue a career in music. Her parents enrolled her at Jason Theatre School. At St. Mary's High School in Cheshunt, she felt embarrassed by the family's wealth and begged her father not to drop her off outside in their Rolls-Royce. In 1991 she entered Laine Theatre Arts in Epsom, Surrey, where she studied dance and modelling. She also became a member of a band called Persuasion.

In March 1994, an advertisement in The Stage asked for girls who were "street smart, extroverted, ambitious and able to sing and dance". She answered it and joined the group that became the Spice Girls. Her early recordings credit her under her maiden name, Victoria Adams. Her bandmates were Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel B and Melanie C. The media gave every member a nickname, and she became Posh Spice.

The group's first single, "Wannabe", came out in 1996. It reached number one in the United Kingdom, in the United States and in 35 other countries. Eight more number ones followed from the albums Spice, Spiceworld and Forever. The Spice Girls have sold over 80 million records, which makes them the best-selling female group of all time. Forever, their third album, reached number two in the UK but sold far less than its predecessors. The group then stopped recording to concentrate on solo careers.

When the group disbanded in 2000, her next step was a solo recording contract with Virgin Records, the group's own label.

  • On the 14th of August 2000, Beckham released "Out of Your Mind" with Dane Bowers and Truesteppers. Spiller's "Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)", featuring Sophie Ellis-Bextor, came out the same week. The tabloids billed the clash "Posh vs. Posher".

The 17th of September 2001 brought "Not Such An Innocent Girl" and another hyped rivalry. Kylie Minogue's "Can't Get You Out of My Head" outsold it eight to one, despite a huge promotional campaign. Beckham's single debuted at number 6. Her self-titled debut album arrived on the 1st of October 2001 and reached number 10 in the UK. It reportedly cost £5 million to produce and sold a modest 50,000 copies.

The second single from the album, "A Mind of Its Own", appeared on the 11th of February 2002. It reached number 6 and sold 56,500 copies. Rumours spread that Virgin would drop her for missing the top three. She said newspapers "just like to put all the negative stuff in" while she and the label thought "it is all great." A third single, "I Wish", was promoted but never released. After the announcement of her second pregnancy, it was shelved. Reports claimed that Mel B and Emma Bunton were dropped by Virgin alongside her. Her publicist replied: "No-one has been dropped. The Virgin deal has come to a natural end and both parties have decided not to continue."

In 2002, Telstar Records and 19 Management gave her a contract worth £1.5 million. She began an electropop album, tentatively titled Open Your Eyes. A year later she wanted a more urban sound. She began recording R&B and hip hop tracks with producer Damon Dash for a second project, tentatively titled Come Together.

In July 2003, radio stations premiered "It's That Simple", featuring M.O.P., as a promotional single. Reviews were mixed. On the 29th of December 2003, Telstar released a double A-side, "Let Your Head Go" and "This Groove". It took one song from each project. Heavy promotion and many television appearances over Christmas lifted it to number three in the UK. Simon Fuller reportedly planned to market her music in the United States.

In April 2004, Telstar announced its bankruptcy, and both albums were cancelled. Disappointed by the studio time she felt had been wasted, Beckham gave up music to focus on fashion. The albums were never released, but both have since leaked online in full.

  • The Spice Girls reformed in 2007 for a tour that reportedly paid each member £10 million, about $20 million. Beckham explained her motive plainly: "I wanted my children to see that Mummy was a pop star. It was the last opportunity for them to stand in a crowd full of people screaming for the Spice Girls." A Greatest Hits album came out in early November 2007, and the tour opened on the 2nd of December 2007. Film-maker Bob Smeaton directed a record of the tour, Spice Girls: Giving You Everything, which BBC One aired on the 31st of December 2007. The group also appeared in Tesco advertisements and were paid £1 million each.

On the 26th of June 2012, all five Spice Girls attended a London press conference to launch a stage musical, Viva Forever! Development had begun in 2010, when producer Judy Craymer teamed up with the group and Simon Fuller. On the 12th of August 2012, they reunited only for one night, performing a medley of "Wannabe" and "Spice Up Your Life" at the 2012 Summer Olympics closing ceremony. It was the most tweeted moment of the ceremony, with over 116,000 tweets per minute. Viva Forever! opened at the Piccadilly Theatre in the West End on the 11th of December 2012.

In January 2026, after a social media outburst from her eldest son Brooklyn, her old singles climbed the charts again. Sales of "Not Such An Innocent Girl" rose by 19,615%. It reached number one on both the UK Singles Downloads chart and the UK Singles Sales chart. "Out of Your Mind" debuted at number 42 on the downloads chart and number 47 on the sales chart. Her album Victoria Beckham entered the UK Albums Downloads chart at number 44 and peaked a week later at number 38.

The revival did not lead to another group reunion. A Spice Girls tour went ahead in 2019 without her, because she chose to focus on her fashion label. Ellen DeGeneres, the American television presenter, asked her why. Beckham answered: "It just didn't feel like the right thing to do. I'll always be Posh Spice, always."

  • On the 17th of February 2000, Beckham made a guest appearance on the catwalk for Maria Grachvogel. It was her debut as a model at London Fashion Week. She went on to serve as a British ambassador for Dolce and Gabbana and was briefly the face of Rocawear in 2003. In 2004 she designed a limited line of jeans for Rock & Republic, called VB Rocks, which sold for about $300 in the US.

On the 16th of January 2006, she walked the runway for Roberto Cavalli at Milan Fashion Week. For a period he dressed her exclusively for red-carpet and social events. In March 2006 she served as fashion editor of Harper's Bazaar for an issue and styled her close friend Katie Holmes. In September 2006, after leaving Rock & Republic, she launched her own denim label, dvb Style. She introduced the dvb Denim collection at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York on the 14th of June 2007, together with her first eyewear range in the United States.

August 2007 brought the Intimately Beckham perfume to American stores. It is one of more than 20 fragrances that she and David Beckham have introduced over the years. In September 2007 her V-Sculpt cosmetics line launched in Tokyo. The April 2008 British edition of Vogue carried her first Vogue appearance. Her eponymous label followed in September 2008, known at first for its dresses.

By 2011 the label had become a fixture of New York Fashion Week, and a lower-priced line, Victoria by Victoria Beckham, was introduced. Sales were predicted to top £60 million a year. The range grew to include separates and luxury handbags selling for up to £18,000. In November 2011 it won Designer Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

Belinda White wrote in the Daily Telegraph in 2011 that the move from WAG to designer had gone better than most people predicted. She said Beckham had "gathered a significant celebrity following" and "won over the scathing fashion pack". In September 2012, research by The Whispr Group found she was the most talked about designer on Twitter during New York Fashion Week. She gained 57,000 new followers during the shows. In February 2014, Alexander Fury wrote in The Independent that the brand had moved from novelty to respected designer. He pointed to her guest editorship of French Vogue and a planned panel with the dean of Parsons design school. He concluded that sales came from the designs themselves, not the celebrity association.

In 2017, her collection for Target offered women's sizes from XS to 3X, along with a new line of children's wear. That year she was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the New Year Honours, for services to the fashion industry. She said she was "delighted and humbled for the recognition," but Conservative MP Peter Bone criticised a "betrayal of etiquette", because she had announced the honour before its official publication. In 2018 the collection was shown at London Fashion Week instead of New York. In 2019 the brand confirmed that it would remain fur-free and, from the autumn and winter collection, would also drop exotic skins. Her stand against fur drew praise from animal rights groups, including PETA.

In September 2019, she launched Victoria Beckham Beauty with co-founder Sarah Creal. They showed it at London Fashion Week. The secondary packaging of the makeup is made from 100% post-consumer waste. Beckham described the products as "active and effective, but clean and kind". The first line was eye makeup, and lip products followed the next month.

In 2026, the French Ministry of Culture named her a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters for services to the fashion industry.

  • In 2012, The Guardian reported that Beckham Ventures, a company linked to the fashion business, was the best performer of the family's three businesses. It came close to matching turnover at the sister company that promotes the David Beckham brand. The accounts told a harder story later.

In 2018, the label was losing £4,000 a day. In November 2019, the BBC reported that Victoria Beckham Limited had posted another annual loss as demand for its high-end clothes "plateaued". The company had not made a profit since it launched in 2008. Its loss for 2018 was £12.3m. Sales slipped 16% to £35m amid weaker wholesale demand.

Chairman Ralph Toledano spoke to the trade journal Business of Fashion. He said: "The performance was in line with expectations, so we were not surprised. Our goal is to reach profitability as soon as possible." He explained that sales of clothing and accessories had levelled off after years of growth. By then the label sold its fashion and accessories in more than 400 stores around the world.

By 2022, the label stood £54 million in debt.

  • On the 11th of January 2000, Channel 4 aired Victoria's Secrets, a programme shown only in the UK. Cameras followed Beckham as she interviewed other British celebrities, including Elton John. Being Victoria Beckham followed in March 2002 and tracked her solo career, her photo shoots and her recording sessions. It drew 8.83 million viewers and topped its timeslot. The verdict from one critic was memorable. She seemed "so clearly level-headed, happy with her not inconsiderable lot and seemingly unfazed by the madly intrusive nature of her monumentally ridiculous fame".

The Real Beckhams aired on ITV1 on the 24th of December 2003. It followed the family's move from London to Madrid after David Beckham signed with Real Madrid. It showed her relaunching her solo career and mocking the tabloid stories she reads every day. About 6.10 million viewers watched. Another ITV documentary aired on the 28th of May 2006. It followed the couple as they prepared a 2006 World Cup party in a marquee at their Hertfordshire mansion, to raise money for their charity. Two tickets sold at online auction for £103,000. Their friend Gordon Ramsay designed the menu and catered for 600 guests, with 40 chefs and 100 waiting staff. Graham Norton hosted the charity auction, and the programme averaged 7.56 million viewers.

Victoria Beckham: Coming to America aired on the 16th of July 2007 in the US and Canada. It documented her preparations for the family's move across the Atlantic. She had signed a deal with NBC for six half-hour episodes, but the plan shrank to a one-hour special. There "just wasn't enough (material) for a series." The New York Post called the show "an orgy of self-indulgence" and described her as "vapid and condescending". It drew 4.9 million viewers, behind a repeat of Wife Swap and two sitcoms. In Britain, 3.84 million watched on ITV the next day.

Later in 2007 she appeared as herself in Ugly Betty, in an episode that aired in the US on the 9th of November. She was guest judge for the finale of Project Runway's fourth season, which aired on the 5th of March 2008. She turned down a part in Sex and the City: The Movie because Spice Girls rehearsals kept her busy. In 2010 she voiced Queen Amphitrite in SpongeBob SquarePants and said the invitation was thrilling, because her children were fans.

On the 13th of September 2001, Beckham published her autobiography, Learning to Fly. The title came from a line in a song from the musical Fame: "I'm gonna live forever, I'm gonna learn how to fly". Hello!, the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday joined forces to buy the right to preview and serialise it, for a figure thought to be near £1 million. A guest appearance on Parkinson, watched by nine million people, helped to promote it. After four weeks it reached number one in the book charts, pushing Robbie Williams' book to second place. It became the third best-selling non-fiction title of 2001, and UK sales stand at more than 500,000 copies.

In 2005, a Spanish journalist quoted her as saying: "I've never read a book in my life". She later said this was a mistranslation. What she had actually said was that she never had time to finish a book, because she was always busy looking after her children.

That Extra Half an Inch: Hair, Heels and Everything in Between came out on the 27th of October 2006. It is a fashion advice guide with photography by Mario Testino, Annie Leibovitz and Steven Meisel. It has sold 400,000 hardcover copies in Britain alone. Its rights have been sold to the United States, the Netherlands, Japan, Portugal, Lithuania, Russia and, most recently, China.

  • In early 1997, Victoria began dating footballer David Beckham after they met at a charity football match. He had watched her music videos and told teammates he was attracted to her, but shyness overcame him when they were first introduced. Months earlier, at a Spice Girls football photo session, she had worn the kit of his club, Manchester United, because the group's manager supported the team. Of their first meeting, she said: "I didn't really know who he was. I was never into football."

The couple announced their engagement in 1998, and the media dubbed them "Posh and Becks". On the 4th of July 1999, they married at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. Paul Colton, the Bishop of Cork, conducted the ceremony. Gary Neville was best man, and the couple's four-month-old son Brooklyn was ring bearer. An exclusive deal with OK! magazine kept most of the media away, but released photographs showed the Beckhams on golden thrones. Victoria wore a diamond coronet created by jewellery designer Slim Barrett. The reception employed 437 staff and cost an estimated £500,000.

In January 2000, a tip-off to Scotland Yard detectives exposed a plot to kidnap Victoria and Brooklyn and hold them at a house in Hampstead, London. The family was moved to a secret location, and no arrests were made. In March of that year, she received a death threat before performing at the Brit Awards with the Spice Girls. At rehearsal, a red laser light appeared on her chest and she was rushed off stage. A fire door was found lodged open, and Beckham later said she had been terrified. In November 2002, five people were arrested over another kidnap plot, which a tabloid newspaper had infiltrated. All charges were dropped after a witness was deemed unreliable.

In a 2025 Netflix documentary, Beckham spoke about her struggles with an eating disorder. She said it "made her good at lying."

In 1999 the couple bought what became their most famous home, for £2.5 million. It stood on 24 acres, received a £3 million renovation and was nicknamed Beckingham Palace by the media. They sold it in 2014. They have four children: sons Brooklyn, born in 1999, Romeo, born in 2002, and Cruz, born in 2005, and a daughter, Harper, born in 2011. Elton John and David Furnish are reportedly godparents of Brooklyn and Romeo. In 2007, the couple's joint wealth was estimated at £112 million ($225 million). By May 2019 the estimate had reached £355 million. She also owns over 100 Birkin bags made by Hermès, including a £100,000 pink one, and the collection is thought to be worth more than £1.5 million. In 2024 they bought a mansion on North Beach Road in Miami Beach for a record-setting $72 million.
