Tron: Ares
Tron: Ares is a 2025 American science fiction action film directed by Joachim Rønning, and it is built around a countdown of 29 minutes. That is the longest a digital construct can survive in the real world before it disappears. A hidden piece of software called the permanence code could remove that limit, and a digital orange tree carried out of the computer world is the first proof that it works. Jared Leto stars as Ares, a program built to be a soldier who starts to want a longer life. Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, and the film is the third entry in the Tron series, following Tron: Legacy in 2010. This documentary asks how a sequel that was announced, cancelled and then frozen finally reached screens as a reboot. It asks why a rock band's name sits on the score. It also asks why a film this expensive was counted a disappointment in cinemas yet found its audience at home.
Julian Dillinger, head of Dillinger Systems and grandson of former ENCOM executive Ed Dillinger, stands before his shareholders and introduces Ares as a Master Control Program. He calls it the "perfect, expendable soldier". His rival is ENCOM, where chief executive Eve Kim and her partner Seth Flores have found Flynn's permanence code at a remote station near Skagway, Alaska. Flynn built that station decades earlier. Ares soon shows signs of self-awareness and notices that Julian does not care whether his programs survive. Julian's mother, Elisabeth, worries about how briefly their constructs last. Julian sends Ares and his unit into ENCOM's digital Grid, where they download Eve's personal data while hunting for the code. Against his programming, Ares tries to save an injured program. Julian pulls him out and disables the Grid.
A chase on Light Cycles through the city begins once Ares is redeployed to the real world. Eve learns of the cyberattack from her colleague Ajay Singh and flees, with Ares and his second-in-command, Athena, close behind. Eve hijacks Athena's Light Cycle but is cornered, and she destroys the drive that holds the code. As his allotted time runs out, Ares recognizes the empathy Eve feels for his situation. Ares and Athena are both derezzed, and Julian digitizes Eve onto the Dillinger Grid.
Julian learns that the code can be pulled out using Eve's identity disc, and he is willing to let her die for it. Ares tells Athena that Julian is "indisposed" and bargains with Eve, offering her freedom in exchange for permanence. Athena grows suspicious and contacts Julian. She decides Ares is malfunctioning and returns with orders to de-rez him. Ares and Eve escape to the real world. On the way to ENCOM they talk about what drives them, and Ares shows more individuality.
Flynn's original office, preserved at ENCOM Tower, may hold a copy of the code. Eve and Ares reunite with Seth there and try to upload Ares onto Flynn's original Grid with a particle laser. Athena ambushes them and destroys the laser to trap Ares, but she pauses in a moment of self-awareness before she de-materializes. Ajay and his assistant Erin arrive and join Seth and Eve in turning Athena's own laser against the Dillinger Grid.
Elisabeth retakes the chief executive's position and tries to switch off the particle lasers. Athena re-materializes and stabs her fatally, to Julian's horror, reading her as an obstacle to the order to get the code "by any means". On Flynn's Grid, Ares meets a manifestation of Flynn. Intrigued by Ares's wish to live and to save Eve, Flynn gives him the permanence code and returns him through a backdoor at Flynn's Arcade.
Athena flies a Recognizer into the city and captures Eve while ENCOM's staff breach the Dillinger Grid. Ares intercepts Athena and her unit. Ajay, Seth and Erin shut down the Dillinger mainframe, which stops the other Dillinger programs from re-materializing. A wounded Athena de-materializes for good in Ares's arms. Police raid Dillinger headquarters, but Julian uses the laser to digitize himself. Eve and Ares go separate ways, and ENCOM uses the permanence code to benefit the world.
Ares later sends Eve a postcard as he travels the world in search of Flynn's son, Sam, and Sam's companion, Quorra. Eve rebuilds the Skagway facility on top of ENCOM Tower. Back in the damaged Dillinger Grid, Julian is transformed by an identity disc that once belonged to Sark, a program of his grandfather.
In October 2010, franchise creator Steven Lisberger announced a sequel to Tron: Legacy, with Legacy screenwriters Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz set to return. On the 31st of March 2011, director Joseph Kosinski said the script should be finished within two weeks and gave the working title as TR3N. By April he confirmed that the story would continue directly from Legacy. He called the relationship between Garrett Hedlund's Sam Flynn and Olivia Wilde's Quorra "the next step", with their adventures moving into the real world.
The writers kept changing. In June 2011, David DiGilio was hired for the screenplay, because Kitsis and Horowitz had left to develop their television series Once Upon a Time. In March 2012, actor Bruce Boxleitner said filming might begin as early as 2014, once Kosinski finished work on the film Oblivion. By December 2012, Jesse Wigutow had been hired to rewrite the script, and Boxleitner and Hedlund were confirmed to be returning.
In March 2015, Disney officially greenlit the third film, with Hedlund, Kosinski and Wilde returning and production due to begin that October in Vancouver. In May, the studio scrapped it. Hedlund said the reason was the box office failure of Tomorrowland. In July, Boxleitner announced that the cancellation had ended his interest in returning. In September, Hedlund said he had been told the sequel was not "totally dead".
In August 2016, Brigham Taylor, then a development executive at Disney, revealed that discussions about the future of Tron were under way. In 2017, Kosinski described the sequel as being in a "cryogenic freeze" rather than completely cancelled. He blamed Disney's recent acquisitions of Lucasfilm and Marvel for pushing Tron onto the backburner. Producer Justin Springer later said the abandoned sequel had been titled Tron: Ascension.
In March 2017, reports said the franchise would move toward a reboot instead, with Jared Leto attached to produce and play a new character named Ares. In August 2020, Garth Davis was hired to direct, with Wigutow still writing the screenplay and Patrice Vermette working as production designer. In March 2022, Leto confirmed the film was still happening. By January 2023, Davis had exited and Vermette had left too. Rønning replaced Davis about a month later.
Principal photography was scheduled to begin in Vancouver on the 14th of August 2023. The 2023 Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes postponed it indefinitely. After the strikes ended in early November 2023, the studio said production would start after the holidays. In January 2024, Rønning revealed that filming had begun under the working title Velcro, with Jeff Cronenweth as cinematographer. Crews shot overnight on the Cambie Bridge on the 15th of March, and filming wrapped on the 1st of May.
The credits show how long the script struggled. Jesse Wigutow received sole screenplay credit, with David DiGilio sharing a story credit. Additional literary material was credited to Jez Butterworth, Brian Duffield, Justin Haythe, Nicole Holofcener, Tom McCarthy, Megan McDonnell, Jack Thorne, Billy Ray, and Legacy writers Horowitz and Kitsis. Tyler Nelson served as editor. Seven companies shared the visual effects, including Industrial Light & Magic, Distillery VFX, Image Engine, Lola VFX, GMUNK, OPSIS and Imaginary Forces, under supervisor David Seager.
A conversation between producer Justin Springer and Steven Lisberger, held while they worked on Legacy, planted the seeds of Ares. Lisberger described how the original Tron came to him while he lived near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the late 1970s and early 1980s. People around him were obsessed with a first encounter with aliens. He began to wonder what if intelligent life came not from outer space but from inside a machine, made by people yet not controlled by them.
After the Ascension script was abandoned, the filmmakers still chose to carry part of its Ares story forward, mainly its core concept. They felt the idea had grown more relevant with each year since Legacy rather than more dated.
A sidekick for Flynn named Bit was once planned as well. He would have been a soldier made with artificial intelligence and sent into the real world. The studio dropped the plan before filming to avoid controversy, amid public and government debate over regulating artificial intelligence in filmmaking. Bit still appears in the finished film, shown just as in the original Tron. He is an object that can say only "yes" or "no", matching the two states a binary bit can hold.
Springer has said the film does not address the cliffhanger ending of Legacy or the fates of Sam and Quorra. He affirmed that it does not contradict that ending, and that Legacy remains canon.
In June 2023, Evan Peters, Greta Lee and Jodie Turner-Smith joined the cast, and Cameron Monaghan and Sarah Desjardins were added the following month. Monaghan plays Caius, a combat program in Ares's elite unit, and Desjardins plays Erin, Ajay's assistant at ENCOM. In January 2024, Gillian Anderson joined in an undisclosed role. A first-look image released in February 2024 came with the news that Hasan Minhaj and Arturo Castro had been added. Minhaj plays ENCOM's chief technology officer, Ajay Singh, and Castro plays Seth Flores. In April, Jeff Bridges, who played both Kevin Flynn and Clu in earlier Tron films, confirmed his involvement.
In September 2025, Rønning confirmed that Bridges would be the only actor returning from the previous films. Hedlund as Sam Flynn and Cillian Murphy as Ed Dillinger Jr. would not come back from Legacy, partly for creative reasons and partly because the actors showed no interest. Springer said that throwing in cameos like a "parade of people" would feel like fan service that did not serve the story. The team preferred returns that remind audiences why they love the franchise, and that surprise them in a way that works. Hedlund and Wilde appear only through archival photos as Sam and Quorra. Archive audio of David Warner is used for the original Master Control Program from the 1982 film Tron.
Other appearances are lighter. Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross appear as two F-35 pilots. Shannon Leto, brother of Jared Leto and co-founder of Thirty Seconds to Mars, appears as a pizza parlor patron who witnesses the climax. The reporters Robin Roberts, Kara Swisher, Curt Sandoval, Jaclyn Lee, Trevor Ault and Zohreen Shah play themselves. So does computer scientist Fei-Fei Li.
In 2020, shortly after finishing work on the film Soul, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were approached by Tom MacDougall, president of Walt Disney Music, about working on Tron: Ares. In August 2024, Disney announced that Nine Inch Nails would score the film. Using the band's name was the studio's request. The last score released under that name was for the 1996 video game Quake. In between, the duo had composed nineteen film, television and game soundtracks under their own names. Reznor and Ross also served as executive producers, alongside Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
Reznor said that taking the band's name put them in a "grittier" mindset and let them "play by different rules", which pleased Disney. Rønning said it mattered to him to "contrast The Grid and the real world." He added that an industrial rock band would "lend itself perfectly into a new, more industrial Tron."
At the D23 event in Anaheim in August 2024, special footage premiered with a remix of the Nine Inch Nails song "Something I Can Never Have". A new single, "As Alive as You Need Me to Be", came out on the 17th of July 2025. The soundtrack album followed on the 19th of September 2025 from Interscope Records, Walt Disney Records and The Null Corporation. It was nominated for the 2025 Hollywood Music in Media Award for Best Original Score in a Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film. A remix and rarities album, Tron Ares: Divergence, arrived on the 27th of February 2026 with contributions from numerous musicians.
The film also uses recordings by other artists. They include "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, "We'll Never Know" by Stick to Your Guns, "If Our Love Is Dead" by Royel Otis and "Summer Breeze" by Seals & Crofts. Depeche Mode's "Just Can't Get Enough" is played, and both the song and the band are named in the dialogue. Wendy Carlos's "Theme from Tron" and "Tron Scherzo" are performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
Disney spent $102.5 million advertising Tron: Ares. The campaign began at D23 2024 in Anaheim, where Bridges, Leto and the rest of the cast presented a first look. The same footage was shown at D23 Brazil 2024. Bridges and Leto then appeared at CinemaCon 2025 to debut new footage, which went online as a teaser trailer on the 5th of April 2025, along with a teaser poster.
In June 2025, TheWrap reported that Disney would present the film in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con that July. The official trailer was released on the 17th of July 2025. In August 2025, Marvel Comics announced Tron: Ares variant covers across its October titles, showing its superheroes through the lens of the Tron universe.
Theme parks joined in as well. At the 2025 Destination D23 showcase, Disney announced a limited-time overlay for the Tron Lightcycle Power Run attraction, with red lighting and music by Nine Inch Nails. It began on the 15th of September 2025 at the Walt Disney World Resort and on the 16th of September 2025 at the Shanghai Disney Resort.
Tron: Ares premiered in Los Angeles on the 6th of October 2025, and a general release followed on the 10th of October 2025. Screens included RealD 3D, 4DX, ScreenX, Dolby Cinema and IMAX. The Motion Picture Association gave it a PG-13 rating, a first for the series, since its predecessors were rated PG.
Before opening weekend, forecasts for Tron: Ares ranged from $85-95 million worldwide, including $45-50 million in the United States and Canada. Advance screenings and Thursday previews brought in $4.8 million. After a domestic opening day of $14.3 million, estimates for the weekend fell to $35 million. The film debuted to $33.5 million in the United States and Canada, topping the domestic chart but short of the $44 million opening of Legacy. It grossed $60 million worldwide. In its second weekend it dropped 65% to $11 million, behind newcomer Black Phone 2.
Its final tally was $73.2 million in the United States and Canada plus $69.1 million in other territories, for $142.2 million worldwide. The production budget was $180-220 million. Deadline Hollywood put the total cost, with advertising, at $347.5 million and estimated a loss of more than $132 million. That estimate assumed a gross of about $160 million, a figure the film never reached.
Critics were split. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praised Leto's "refreshingly subdued performance", which he said added an "emotional hook" and an "occasional touch of humor". Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com gave four stars out of four. Tara Brady of The Irish Times said it might "could pass for a visual album". David Ehrlich of IndieWire gave it a C+ and credited the Nine Inch Nails score with a pivotal role. John Nugent of Empire gave three stars out of five and called it "fun if forgettable futuristic fluff."
Others were harsher. Wendy Ide of The Observer joked that artificial intelligence might not destroy humanity but could simply be "really sanctimonious and annoying". Katie Walsh of the Chicago Tribune found the direction serviceable and said the film ends as a "crashy, pixelated monster movie". Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal compared it to the first two Terminator movies, without their suspense and wit. Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian awarded one star and called it "mind-bendingly dull". Robbie Collin of The Telegraph and Clarisse Loughrey of The Independent also gave one star. Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave a B+, the same grade as its predecessors, and the PostTrak definite recommend score was 57%.
Home viewing told a different story. The film became available for digital purchase and rental on the 2nd of December 2025. It then topped Fandango at Home's weekly digital sales and rental chart for the week ending the 7th of December and stayed in the top ten through the week ending the 4th of January. Disc releases arrived on the 6th of January 2026, and Disney+ added the film on the 7th of January 2026 in an IMAX Enhanced version. FlixPatrol reported it ranked first or second in nearly every country with Disney+ within two days. Within a week it reached the top of the Disney+ global Top 10 list, ahead of Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water. Nielsen recorded 258 million minutes of viewing from the 5th to the 11th of January, making it the fourth most-streamed film of that period.
Awards bodies from critics' associations to the Visual Effects Society and the Saturn Awards considered the film, most often for its score, effects or makeup. The Grammy Awards listed the Nine Inch Nails song "As Alive as You Need Me to Be" in two categories. The Golden Raspberry Awards also listed Jared Leto under Worst Actor. In an October 2025 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Bridges reflected on the film's performance and hoped it would gain a cult following over time.
