• 1. Introduction

  Terry William Rozier III carries a nickname meant to unsettle opponents: Scary Terry. In the fall of 2025, though, it was the Federal Bureau of Investigation studying his next move, not an opposing defender. He had built a long NBA career full of standout scoring nights, all while carrying a difficult family history from childhood. Then an alleged illegal gambling scheme intersected with all of it. What shaped the person behind that nickname, and how did a professional basketball career end up entangled in a federal investigation?

• 2. A Childhood Interrupted

  Rozier was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on the 17th of March 1994. His father, Terry Rozier Sr., was sent to prison for eight years when Rozier was only two months old. The elder Rozier was released in 2005, and father and son spent a few months together before he was arrested again. This time the charge was involuntary manslaughter, tied to a robbery and kidnapping from 2003 that had ended in the accidental death of an accomplice. A court sentenced Rozier Sr. to 13 years.

  Raised mainly by his mother, Gina Tucker, and grandmother, Amanda Tucker, Rozier grew up alongside a brother and a half-sister. Amid that upheaval, he began building the game that would eventually carry him out of Ohio.

• 3. Path To The NBA

  At Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, Rozier averaged 25.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.7 steals in his senior year. He led the team to a 21-3 record and a trip to the regional semifinals, the school's first appearance there since 2002. He earned All-Lake Erie League honors for three straight years and graduated in 2012, ranked 74th on ESPNU's Top 100 Players list.

  Rozier's grades needed work, so he spent a year at Hargrave Military Academy before enrolling at Louisville. In the 2012-13 season there, he averaged 29.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists as the team went 38-8. He was named MVP of the 2012 Kentucky Derby Festival Basketball Classic and finished second in that event's dunk and three-point contests.

  As a freshman at Louisville in 2013-14, Rozier averaged 7.0 points and 3.1 rebounds across 37 games and made the AAC All-Rookie Team. The following season he led the Cardinals in scoring at 17.1 points per game and earned second-team All-ACC recognition. On the 30th of March 2015, Rozier and teammate Montrezl Harrell both declared for the NBA draft.

• 4. A Reserve In Boston

  On the 25th of June 2015, the Boston Celtics selected Rozier with the 16th overall pick in the NBA draft. He signed his rookie-scale contract that July. As a rookie, he was assigned several times to the Maine Red Claws, Boston's development league affiliate. He appeared in 39 games that season, scoring a season-high seven points on two occasions.

  On the 18th of December 2017, Rozier delivered one of his signature plays. A steal and go-ahead dunk with 1.5 seconds left gave the Celtics a 112-111 win over the Indiana Pacers. A little over a month later, on the 31st of January 2018, he made his first career NBA start. He immediately recorded a triple-double, with 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, in a 103-73 win over the New York Knicks. That made him only the second player in NBA history to record a triple-double in his first career start. Tony Wroten had set the original mark with the Philadelphia 76ers on the 13th of November 2013.

  During the 2017-18 season, Rozier helped push Boston into the Eastern Conference Finals while starting in place of an injured Kyrie Irving. He scored a career-high 33 points in his sixth start, a 104-93 win over the Sacramento Kings, and added five rebounds and three assists. The Celtics ultimately lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers in seven games in the conference finals.

  In one of his final games in a Celtics uniform, Rozier scored 17 points on the 30th of January 2019. He tied a career high with 10 assists in a 126-94 win over the Charlotte Hornets, the team that would trade for him within months.

• 5. Full Time In Charlotte

  On the 6th of July 2019, the Hornets acquired Rozier in a sign-and-trade deal that also involved Kemba Walker. Charlotte gave him a three-year, $56.7 million contract.

  Critics questioned the contract after Rozier struggled in the 2019 playoffs and Charlotte lost longtime star Kemba Walker. His play improved as the season progressed. He set a career high with 40 points in a double-overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks on the 8th of March 2020. He broke that mark with 42 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers on the 23rd of December 2020. He broke it again with 43 points against the New Orleans Pelicans on the 9th of May 2021.

  The Hornets reached the new play-in tournament in the spring of 2021. Their season ended with a 144-117 loss to the Indiana Pacers on the 18th of May. Rozier finished that game with 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists. That August, on the 24th, Rozier signed a four-year, $97 million contract extension with Charlotte. The Hornets returned to the play-in round the following season but again fell short. They lost 132-103 to the Atlanta Hawks on the 13th of April 2022, even as Rozier scored 21 points.

  On the 6th of January 2023, Rozier posted a season-high 39 points in a win over the Milwaukee Bucks. It was one of his last standout nights in a Hornets uniform before a trade the following year sent him elsewhere.

• 6. A New Start In Miami

  On the 23rd of January 2024, the Miami Heat traded for Rozier, sending Kyle Lowry and a protected first-round draft pick to Charlotte in return. He made his Heat debut the very next day. He contributed nine points, five assists, four rebounds and two steals in a 105-96 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.

  It was a modest opening night for a player who had just finished four and a half seasons as a full-time starter in Charlotte.

• 7. Off The Court

  Rozier gained social media notoriety after appearing on NBA TV's The Starters. There, he revealed his 'family recipe': a sandwich made with spaghetti, ranch and sugar. He also co-hosted the Mickstape podcast, part of the Barstool Sports network.

  The podcast gave Rozier a platform well beyond the basketball court, one that continued even as his legal troubles began.

• 8. A Federal Case

  On the 30th of January 2025, the NBA confirmed that federal authorities were investigating Rozier over a 2023 game. An unusually high volume of bets had been placed on him underperforming in that game. In that game, playing for the Hornets, Rozier left after only nine minutes because of a foot injury.

  Unlike Jontay Porter, who was permanently banned from the NBA under similar suspicion, Rozier kept playing for the Heat. Porter had stopped playing for the rest of that season once the suspicion arose. At that point, Rozier had not been charged with a crime or personally accused of wrongdoing.

  On the 23rd of October 2025, federal agents arrested Rozier alongside Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former NBA player Damon Jones. The arrests were part of a much larger investigation into sports betting and gambling tied to organized crime. That investigation named the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese and Lucchese families of the American Mafia. The NBA responded by placing Rozier on indefinite unpaid leave and ordering him to stay away from the Heat, one game into the 2025-26 season.

  On the 8th of December 2025, Rozier pled not guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering. On the 10th of April 2026, the Heat waived him, ending his time with the franchise that had traded for him only two years earlier.
