Star Wars Roleplaying Game (Fantasy Flight Games)
Fantasy Flight Games announced the acquisition of the Star Wars roleplaying license at Gen Con 2011. The new publisher unveiled three distinct product lines for release between 2013 and 2015. These included Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, Star Wars: Age of Rebellion, and Star Wars: Force and Destiny. A beta version of the first line appeared later that same year alongside a Beginner Game box set. Parent company Asmodee transferred the license to its subsidiary Edge Studio shortly thereafter. Edge Studio announced continued support through reprints in October 2021. The third line arrived in September 2014 as a beta release before its full launch in June 2015. Additional support exists for eras depicted in films like Rogue One and The Clone Wars television series. Star Wars: Rise of the Separatists covers the beginning of the Clone Wars era at the start of the Palpatine regime. It was released on the 9th of May 2019 alongside Collapse of the Republic which details the second half of that conflict. Players design characters using species templates that determine base characteristic ratings between one and six. Human-like Corellian and Mandalorian species classify as human races alongside standard humans. Xenophobic Empire terms humanoid aliens near-humans while treating non-humanoid creatures differently. Each species possesses unique racial minimums maximums plus additional talents or special abilities. Players select a career then choose three or more available specializations within that career path. Specialization trees grant specialization-based talents costing experience points to unlock sequentially. Characters cannot buy new careers but may purchase additional specializations under existing ones at reduced cost. Universal careers allow crossover between different game lines with lower costs than switching careers entirely. Skills range from knowledge combat and general types all starting at zero level by default. Skill ranks substitute yellow proficiency dice for green ability dice per rank purchased. Opposing skill rolls use purple difficulty dice scaled from one to five based on task complexity. Talents add flavor through bonuses benefits penalties removals or adversary disadvantages requiring experience point expenditure. Passive talents remain always active during sessions while active talents require difficulty rolls before use. Disadvantages offset point costs during creation including obligation duty morality ambition cause relationship quest belief faith. Motivation systems guide character principles earning experience point bonuses when
utilized effectively in gameplay.
