Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire
Lucasfilm publishing director Lucy Autrey Wilson met with Bantam editor Lou Aronica in 1994 to discuss future publications. Aronica suggested a Star Wars crossover multimedia event that would span multiple formats. Later that year, Lucasfilm gathered franchise licensees including LucasArts representatives and author Steve Perry. They planned a story set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi without producing an actual film. George Lucas wanted to reinvigorate interest ahead of his 1997 Special Editions of the original trilogy. Producers originally intended the project to focus on main characters between the first two films. Dark Forces game designer Jon Knoles proposed placing the narrative after The Empire Strikes Back instead. This era had never been explored by any other Star Wars novel at that time.
Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Lando Calrissian hire Battle of Hoth veteran Dash Rendar. He has located Boba Fett's ship carrying the frozen Han Solo aboard. The heroes lead an attempt to liberate Han from the bounty hunter but are outgunned by Imperial TIE fighters. Luke Skywalker constructs a new lightsaber while being chased by swoop bike riders working for Jabba the Hutt. Dash saves Luke before he leads Bothan pilots to intercept plans for a second Death Star. Darth Vader agents capture Luke briefly revealing Prince Xizor, a Falleen leader of Black Sun crime syndicate. Xizor attempts to kill Luke to gain Emperor Palpatine's favor. Leia and Chewbacca travel to Rodia meeting Xizor's human-replica droid Guri who takes them to Coruscant. Xizor tries to seduce the princess to bait Luke into his trap. Luke, Lando and Dash sneak into the palace to rescue Leia while Vader destroys Xizor's Skyhook base with his Star Destroyer. Debris hits the Outrider apparently killing Dash in the process.

Excerpts from the comic appeared in Nintendo Power magazine alongside two mini-comics released with Micro Machines toys. These constraints prevented dynamic camera angles and real-time rendering found in the computer version. Four distinct mission phases guide players through battles against IG-88 swoop bikers Imperial fighters and Xizor's forces.

The disc includes interactive content for personal computers containing concept art project overviews creative team galleries and information about all media components. Ten tracks span durations from 1:48 to 10:44 covering key narrative moments like Xizor's Theme and Destruction of Palace.
Kenner produced action figures including new characters such as Xizor Dash Rendar Chewbacca disguised as Snoova and Luke Skywalker in Imperial uniform. Their line contained vehicles ranging from Outrider to swoop bikes plus two-pack pairings of classic and new characters. Swoop bikes ASP labor droids and Dash Rendar's ship Outrider appear in the 1997 Special Edition of A New Hope. The novel Specter of the Past mentions Xizor while Bounty Hunter Wars trilogy explores his and Fett's backstory from 1998 to 1999. Following Disney's 2012 acquisition most licensed novels and comics became rebranded as Legends non-canon material declared in April 2014. The Clone Wars episodes made Falleen and Black Sun canon through Darth Maul's Shadow Collective absorbing the syndicate. Modified Outrider appears in Star Wars Rebels while Rendar is mentioned in Solo: A Star Wars Story Tales from Vandor book. Galaxy's Edge cookbook features recipe for Xizor Salad released in 2019. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy stated characters like Dash Rendar were discussed all time for future projects without specific announcements in 2023.
