  • Matthew McConaughey, the American actor, won the part that launched his career by walking up to a stranger in a hotel bar. At the time he was a film student at the University of Texas in Austin. He had gone out with his girlfriend to the Hyatt bar, and the bartender pointed out a man sitting nearby. Casting director Don Phillips later recalled the moment. The bartender said, "See that guy down there? That's Don Phillips. He cast Sean Penn in Fast Times." According to Phillips, the student answered, "I'm gonna go down and talk to this guy." That single decision set up one of the more unusual careers in modern film. How does a student with no part in a movie become one of its most remembered faces? Why would a man who was famous and well paid decide to turn down the very work that made him famous? And what did the path to Hollywood look like for someone whose early plans pointed in entirely different directions?

  • Uvalde, Texas, is where Matthew David McConaughey was born on the 4th of November 1969. His mother, Mary Kathleen, was a published author and former kindergarten teacher from Trenton, New Jersey. His father, James Donald McConaughey, was born in Mississippi in 1929 and raised in Louisiana. There he ran an oil pipe supply business. Jim also played college football for the Kentucky Wildcats and the Houston Cougars. The Green Bay Packers chose him in the 27th round of the 1953 NFL draft. They released him before the season began, and he never played an official league game. The elder McConaugheys married each other three times and divorced twice. Matthew has two older brothers, Michael and Patrick, who was adopted. Michael goes by the nickname "Rooster" and is a millionaire who starred in the CNBC docu-series West Texas Investors Club. The family were Methodists with Irish roots, particularly in the County Cavan and County Monaghan area. Matthew is also a relative of the Confederate brigadier general Dandridge McRae.

In 1980 McConaughey moved to Longview, Texas, and later attended Longview High School. In 1988 he set off for Australia, expecting to attend a high school in Sydney. Instead he spent a year in Warnervale, New South Wales, as a Rotary Youth Exchange student at Gorokan High School. He worked as an assistant for an attorney and as a bank teller for ANZ. During that year, and for the next 10 years, he seriously considered becoming a monk. A friend who was a monk set him straight. The friend told him he was not meant to be a monk but "a communicator" and "a storyteller".

McConaughey began at the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1989 and joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He had wanted to attend Southern Methodist University until one of his brothers warned that private-school tuition would strain the family's finances. He graduated in the spring of 1993 with a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film. Law school had been the plan, but he found he had no interest in becoming a lawyer. On screen, though, he would play lawyers again and again.

  • Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused originally had a small role called Wooderson, which the filmmakers meant to cast locally to save money. That is why a student in an Austin bar was even in range. Phillips recalls that Linklater did not like McConaughey at first, because he was "too handsome". Production then shifted in his favor. Another character, Pickford, had been planned as a larger part. Linklater remembered the actor playing him as the opposite of McConaughey, someone who "wasn't really getting along with everybody". The cast did not respond to that actor, so Pickford's screen time was cut and Wooderson grew. Much of the new material was improvised or written on the spot.

Before that film, on the 6th of August 1993, Bob Balaban's My Boyfriend's Back had given McConaughey his first big-screen appearance, as a character credited as "Guy 2". Dazed and Confused opened on the 24th of September 1993 in 183 theaters. It took in $918,127 on its opening weekend and finished with $7.9 million in North America. Reviews were positive, and the film holds a 92% approval rating on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Marjorie Baumgarten of The Austin Chronicle singled out the newcomer. She wrote that he "nails this guy without a hint of condescension or whimsy". The large ensemble around him included many actors who would later become stars. Within three years, a courtroom drama would give McConaughey a lead of his own.

  • In 1992, a year before his breakthrough, McConaughey was cast as the boyfriend in the music video for "Walkaway Joe", a song by Trisha Yearwood featuring Don Henley. He had also begun working in television commercials and acted in an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. After Dazed and Confused, 1994 brought Angels in the Outfield, The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Daniel Johnston's music video "Life in Vain". Herbert Ross's Boys on the Side premiered on the 3rd of February 1995. That year he also appeared in the crime thriller Scorpion Spring.

John Sayles's Lone Star, released in 1996, put him in an ensemble with Chris Cooper, Kris Kristofferson, and Elizabeth Peña. The neo-Western mystery is set in a small South Texas town. Then came Joel Schumacher's A Time to Kill, which premiered on the 24th of July. McConaughey played the lawyer Jake Brigance in this adaptation of John Grisham's courtroom novel. He shared top billing with Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kevin Spacey. Critics were lukewarm, and the film holds a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences disagreed. It reached number one in its first two weeks and grossed over $108 million domestically, plus $43.5 million abroad. McConaughey won Best Breakthrough Performance at the MTV Movie Awards. He also took supporting roles in Bill Murray's road comedy Larger Than Life and in Glory Daze.

In 1997 he starred in Robert Zemeckis's Contact, an adaptation of Carl Sagan's 1985 novel of the same name. Sagan and his wife, Ann Druyan, wrote the story outline, and Jodie Foster played the protagonist. That same year Steven Spielberg's Amistad cast McConaughey as Roger Sherman Baldwin, then a lawyer. In 1998 Linklater co-wrote and directed The Newton Boys, the true story of the Newton Gang, a family of bank robbers from McConaughey's own hometown of Uvalde. Ron Howard's EDtv followed in 1999, adapted from the Quebecois film Louis 19, King of the Airwaves. It flopped, earning only $35.2 million against an $80 million production budget. In 2000 he starred in the submarine film U-571, directed by Jonathan Mostow.

  • The Wedding Planner arrived in 2001, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days followed in 2003. Both were box office successes. Failure to Launch, with Sarah Jessica Parker, came in 2006. Fool's Gold followed in 2008 and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past in 2009. Together, these romantic comedies made him a sex symbol. In 2005 People magazine named him its "Sexiest Man Alive".

He still found room for other work. He played a firefighter in the low-budget Tiptoes, opposite Kate Beckinsale. In Two for the Money he played a protégé to a gambling mogul portrayed by Al Pacino. He also appeared in Frailty, directed by his co-star Bill Paxton. For the 2005 adventure Sahara, with Steve Zahn and Penélope Cruz, he promoted the film by sailing down the Amazon River and trekking to Mali. In 2006 he played Marshall head football coach Jack Lengyel in We Are Marshall. Late that year he lent his voice to an ad campaign for the Peace Corps. He also replaced Owen Wilson in Ben Stiller's Tropic Thunder after Wilson's suicide attempt.

The commercial work grew too. In 2008 McConaughey became the new voice of the national radio campaign "Beef: It's What's for Dinner", taking over from Sam Elliott.

  • McConaughey later described his own image as a "lifestyle, living on the beach, running with my shirt off, doing romantic comedies". He saw that it had typecast him. Better scripts, he noticed, came only from independent productions with much smaller paychecks, if they came at all. So he began saying no, knowing work would dry up. He remembered the wait plainly: "Year and a half, still nothing." Then, in his words, "At two years, all of a sudden, in my opinion, I became a new good idea for some good directors." His two-year hiatus from film acting ended in 2011 with the legal drama The Lincoln Lawyer.

In 2012 he starred beside Channing Tatum in Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike, which drew on Tatum's early life. He earned praise that year as a fugitive in Mud. He also returned to his East Texas roots in Linklater's Bernie, playing district attorney Danny Buck Davidson. In June 2012 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited him to join.

Dallas Buyers Club, in 2013, asked even more. As Ron Woodroof, a rodeo rider who discovers he has AIDS and fights for treatment, he lost nearly 50 lb (22 kg). The role brought the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama, and the Academy Award for Best Actor. Co-star Jared Leto won Best Supporting Actor for playing Rayon. It was the first time since Mystic River in 2003 that one film took both awards. McConaughey also played Mark Hanna, an early boss of Jordan Belfort, in Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street.

In April 2014, Time put him on its Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. That year he also received a star at 6931 Hollywood Boulevard. He shared top billing with Woody Harrelson in HBO's True Detective, playing Rust Cohle. The part won him the Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series. He lost the Emmy to Bryan Cranston. Critic Rachel Syme named this run of serious roles "The McConaissance", and one review praised him for "getting older while staying the same age". He closed the year as Cooper, a widowed father and astronaut, in Christopher Nolan's Interstellar.

  • In August 2014, the Lincoln Motor Company signed McConaughey to a multi-year advertising collaboration. Nicolas Winding Refn, the director of Drive, made the commercials. They showed McConaughey as a storyteller driving a Lincoln MKC crossover. Within weeks, Ellen DeGeneres, Conan O'Brien, Jim Carrey, South Park, and Saturday Night Live had parodied them. Lincoln's overall sales rose 25 percent one month after the ads debuted. The campaign ran for several more years and extended to the MKZ sedan, the MKX and Nautilus crossovers, and the Aviator SUV. In 2016 Wild Turkey hired him as creative director and spokesman for a campaign meant to draw in more women and more international customers.

His films were uneven. He finished Gus Van Sant's The Sea of Trees, with Ken Watanabe, in 2015. In 2016 he starred in Free State of Jones and Gold. He also voiced leading characters in two animated films, Kubo and the Two Strings and Sing. The Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, in 2017, drew negative reactions from most critics. White Boy Rick, in 2018, earned mixed reviews. Serenity, with Diane Lane and Anne Hathaway, was panned by critics and audiences after its release on the 25th of January 2019. Harmony Korine's comedy The Beach Bum, with Zac Efron and Jonah Hill, followed on the 29th of March. Late that year Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen cast him as the fictional cannabis baron Mickey Pearson.

In 2020 he published a memoir, Greenlights. On the 6th of February 2023 it was announced that he would voice an animated Elvis Presley on the Netflix series Agent Elvis, which was released on the 17th of March. He returned to feature acting in 2025 in the crime film The Rivals of Amziah King, which premiered at South by Southwest in March to critical acclaim. His next project was Paul Greengrass's survival thriller The Lost Bus, released on Apple TV+ in October 2025. In it he plays a bus driver navigating the 2018 Camp Fire.

  • McConaughey met Camila Alves in 2006. They became engaged on Christmas Day 2011 and married on the 9th of June 2012 in a private Catholic ceremony in Austin, where they live. They have three children. McConaughey is a Christian who speaks often about his faith and attends a non-denominational church. He has said that some people in Hollywood have judged him for it. He describes thanking God from the stage while receiving an award and watching friends he had prayed with begin to clap, then "sit back on their hands".

In 2019 he became a minority owner of Austin FC, a Major League Soccer team that began play in 2021. His title there is "minister of culture". He is also a longtime fan of the Washington Commanders. In 2023 he said that he and his friend Woody Harrelson, his True Detective co-star and co-executive producer, could be half-brothers. His mother claimed to have been intimate with Harrelson's father, Charles Harrelson, around the time of McConaughey's conception. In September 2023 Madame Tussauds New York unveiled a wax figure of him inspired by his 2021 appearance on The Tonight Show. The unveiling coincided with a visit to The View to promote his children's book, Just Because. In September 2025 he published another book, Poems & Prayers. On the 7th of November 2025, he and his wife christened the Princess Cruises ship Star Princess in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, as its godparents.

Politics drew him in slowly. In November 2020, on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he denied any interest in running for governor. The Texas Tribune noted that he had not voted in a primary since at least 2012 and had never donated to a state or federal campaign through 2021. By March 2021 he confirmed he was considering a run in the 2022 Texas gubernatorial election. In an October 2021 Twitter Spaces interview with NPR, he said he was not running "until I am". He stayed "purposely vague" on issues such as voting rights and abortion and never named a party. Just over two weeks before the candidate filing deadline, he released a video saying he would not run.

In June 2022 he joined a White House press briefing and spoke for 20 minutes about the Uvalde school shooting in his hometown. He said, "We need background checks." CNN called the speech "impassioned and at-times emotional". In July 2024 he addressed the National Governors Association, reiterated his interest in political office, and said he was on a "learning tour".

He also started the just keep livin foundation, which helps teenagers lead active lives and make healthy choices. On the 25th of February 2016 unite4:humanity gave him its Creative Conscience award for that work. At his alma mater, he served as a visiting instructor from 2015 and became a professor of practice in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the Moody College of Communication in 2019. His first two class sessions were about the making of Free State of Jones.
