In April 2023, three French researchers established Mistral AI in Paris. Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix had previously worked at Google DeepMind and Meta Platforms before meeting during their studies at École Polytechnique. The company took its name from the mistral, a powerful cold wind that sweeps across southern France. This term originates from the Occitan language and reflects the founders' desire to create something forceful yet natural. Their background in advanced AI systems set the stage for rapid development. The trio brought together expertise in large-scale models and system architecture. They began building open-weight large language models shortly after incorporation.
