  • On the 18th of October 2010, Walt Disney Studios agreed to pay Paramount at least $115 million for the worldwide distribution rights to Iron Man 3. This financial agreement resolved a conflict between Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment's new corporate parent, the Walt Disney Company. The deal cleared the path for Phase Two to begin with Iron Man 3 in May 2013. Kevin Feige announced the full slate of films at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2012. The lineup included Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Feige later clarified that Ant-Man would be the final film of this phase instead of starting Phase Three. Joss Whedon signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Studios in August 2012 through June 2015. He wrote and directed Age of Ultron while consulting on all other films in the phase. Whedon explained his role involved reading scripts and watching cuts to give opinions on each project. He aimed to ensure things could be adjusted between the films without forcing audiences to see every prior movie. A new Marvel Studios logo appeared for The Dark World featuring a fanfare composed by Brian Tyler. The studio created this design because it was the first film without a distributor logo following the Disney acquisition. Each film in the phase features a hand or arm being cut off as a reference to Star Wars.

  • Filming for Iron Man 3 began in May 2012 in North Carolina before moving to southern Florida, China, and Los Angeles. Shane Black co-wrote the script with Drew Pearce after joining the project in February 2011. Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle reprised their roles from previous films. Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley joined the cast as Aldrich Killian and Trevor Slattery respectively. Mark Ruffalo shot a post-credits scene with Downey at the 84th Academy Awards when production was close to wrapping. Thor: The Dark World started production in September 2012 in Surrey, England with additional filming in Iceland and London. Alan Taylor directed the sequel while Tom Hiddleston confirmed his return as Loki in September 2011. Christopher Eccleston was cast as Malekith one month after the title announcement in July 2012. Chris Evans made a cameo appearance where Hiddleston wore the Captain America costume before Evans arrived to shoot the final version. James Gunn directed the mid-credits scene featuring Benicio del Toro as the Collector during a second unit shooting day on Guardians of the Galaxy. The Russo brothers took over directing duties for Captain America: The Winter Soldier in June 2012. Production began in April 2013 in Manhattan Beach, California with shoots also taking place in Washington D.C. and Cleveland, Ohio. Sebastian Stan returned as Bucky Barnes while Anthony Mackie joined the cast as Sam Wilson. Joss Whedon directed a post-credits scene introducing Baron Wolfgang von Strucker and the Maximoff twins. James Gunn wrote and directed Guardians of the Galaxy based on his screenplay with Nicole Perlman. Chris Pratt was cast as Peter Quill in February 2013. Filming occurred at Shepperton Studios and in London from July to October 2013. Josh Brolin provided voice work for Thanos who appears in the film's mid-credits scene. Second unit filming for Avengers: Age of Ultron started on the 11th of February 2014 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Principal photography ran from March to August 2014 across multiple international locations including Italy and South Korea. Peyton Reed directed Ant-Man after Edgar Wright left the project in May 2014 due to creative differences. Paul Rudd was cast as Scott Lang in December 2013 followed by Michael Douglas playing Hank Pym in January 2014. Pre-production began in October 2013 with principal photography running from August to December 2014.

Thor: The Dark World earned $644,783,140 globally with a production cost ranging from $150 million to $170 million. Its production budget ranged significantly from $250 million to $444 million depending on final accounting. Ant-Man concluded the phase with $519,311,965 in global box office receipts after spending roughly $130 million. The six films collectively grossed over one billion dollars at the international box office. Iron Man 3 ranked as the 39th highest-grossing film of all time upon release. Thor: The Dark World placed 222nd on that same list while Captain America: The Winter Soldier reached number 134. Guardians of the Galaxy achieved rank 79 and Age of Ultron secured position 25 globally. Ant-Man finished at 283rd place among all-time theatrical releases. Marvel announced a 13-disc box set titled Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two Collection for the 8th of December 2015. This exclusive Amazon.com release included all six films plus bonus discs containing deleted scenes and featurettes.

  • Liam Gaughan at Collider described Phase Two as a fascinating era focusing on character development after their initial introductions. He ranked The Winter Soldier as the best film due to its political commentary and action sequences. Gaughan also praised the team dynamic found within Guardians of the Galaxy and the depiction of the Mandarin in Iron Man 3. Kevin DelSignore of Comic Book Resources stated the phase took bold chances making the movies highly entertaining. David Harth from the same outlet criticized the visual effects-heavy climaxes common across each film. Alexandra Ramos writing for CinemaBlend praised the exploration of Stark's mental health in Iron Man 3. She felt The Winter Soldier bridged the gap between superhero movies and compelling drama effectively. Jeff Ames of ComingSoon.net placed Phase Two second-best after Phase Three following the release of later entries. He noted the phase stumbled with The Dark World and Age of Ultron but remained positive about other titles. Rich Knight at CinemaBlend listed Phase Two last on his retrospective list citing polarized fan responses. He called The Dark World arguably the very worst Marvel movie while criticizing Age of Ultron as not-as-good follow-up. Rachel Ulatowski from The Mary Sue agreed with the low ranking pointing out the least cohesive overarching storyline of all phases. She argued that The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy could not hold up the disjointed nature of the era.

  • The films of Phase Two received four Academy Award nominations during their theatrical runs. They also garnered three BAFTA Award nominations alongside one Grammy Award win. Saturn Awards recognized the franchise with forty nominations resulting in nine wins for various categories. Hugo Awards honored the work with four nominations leading to a single victory. MTV Movie & TV Awards presented twenty-two nominations to the collective films. Visual Effects Society Awards bestowed fourteen nominations upon the productions. These accolades highlighted the technical achievements and storytelling efforts across the six feature films. The awards season reflected both critical acclaim and industry appreciation for the expanding universe.

  • Marvel One-Shots functioned as direct-to-video short films included as special features on Blu-ray releases. Agent Carter released digitally on the 24th of September 2013 and physically later under Louis D'Esposito's direction. Eric Pearson wrote the script while Kevin Feige produced the project. All Hail the King followed as a digital release on the 25th of February 2014 written by Drew Pearce. WHIH Newsfront served as an in-universe current affairs show created in partnership with Google for YouTube campaigns. Leslie Bibb reprised her role as Christine Everhart from earlier Iron Man films within this viral marketing effort. Initial videos released during July 2015 focused on the immediate aftermath of Age of Ultron. Corey Stoll and Paul Rudd appeared in their respective roles of Darren Cross and Scott Lang throughout these online segments. Comic book tie-ins provided additional backstory for characters or events introduced in the main films. Video games accompanied several feature film releases to expand the narrative experience further. The Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase Two Collection box set included all of the Marvel One-Shots with commentary tracks. Deleted scenes and pre-production features were added to each film within the collection package.
