  • Leslye Headland was born on the 26th of November 1980 in suburban Maryland. She grew up in a strict religious home that would later shape her artistic perspective. Her family background included Christian upbringing which influenced the themes she explores today. Headland graduated from Staples High School in 1999 before attending New York University. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama from Tisch School of the Arts in 2002. During college she also attended Playwrights Horizons Theater School to refine her craft. After graduation she spent three and a half years working as an assistant at Miramax Studios. Six months of that tenure involved serving directly as Harvey Weinstein's personal assistant. This experience inspired her 2012 play Assistance though she clarified she never witnessed physical assault by Weinstein.

  • Headland transitioned from writing plays about the Seven Deadly Sins to directing feature films. Her first television industry job arrived in 2010 as a staff writer for FX series Terriers. The play Bachelorette premiered Off-Broadway in 2010 before becoming a film. She wrote and directed the 2012 movie version starring Kirsten Dunst and Lizzy Caplan. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival featuring three women reuniting for a wedding. Rebel Wilson played the friend who was ridiculed in high school during the story. Her play Assistance opened in 2008 and ran from February 27 to the 11th of March 2012 at Playwrights Horizons. NBC acquired television rights in 2013 with Will Ferrell set to executive produce. Headland then directed Sleeping with Other People which starred Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie. She described the film as Like When Harry Met Sally for assholes during an interview with The Wrap. The project also premiered at the Sundance Film Festival that same year.

  • Headland co-created Russian Doll with Natasha Lyonne and Amy Poehler for Netflix. The series premiered on the 1st of February 2019 marking her first time co-creating a television show. She directed four episodes and co-wrote three of them throughout its run until 2022. Headland became the last of the three women to join the project initially. She stated it was important to explore spiritual questions rather than romance for female protagonists. The show earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series. It also received recognition for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode Nothing in This World Is Easy. Lyonne eventually took over as showrunner for the second season though Headland alluded to involvement. The series won a Hugo Award for Best Dramatic Presentation Long Form in 2020. A Nebula Award followed for the episode The Way Out later that same year.

  • Disney+ announced Headland would write and executive produce The Acolyte on the 4th of May 2020 during Star Wars Day. The series takes place during the final days of the High Republic era in the franchise timeline. Reports revealed the production cost $180 million across eight episodes taking four years to make. Forbes reported in September 2025 that total costs reached $256.7 million after completion. The premiere drew 2.94 million views for its first episode within two days making it Disney+'s second biggest launch of 2024. Rotten Tomatoes showed an average approval rating of 78% from critics but only 19% from audiences. Some outlets called the budget staggering while others cited review bombing by displeased viewers. The series was canceled after one season reportedly due to weak viewership numbers. The Hollywood Reporter attributed cancellation partly to erosion of goodwill surrounding the Star Wars brand. Deadline noted Headland had pitched ideas for a potential second season before the decision arrived.

  • Headland wrote a string of plays based on the Seven Deadly Sins spanning decades of work. Cinephillia represented lust while Bachelorette covered gluttony in her theatrical cycle. Assistance dealt with greed and Surfer Girl explored sloth through character narratives. Reverb examined wrath and The Accidental Blonde focused on envy as themes. Her final play Cult of Love opened on Broadway at the Hayes Theatre in fall 2024. This marked her debut as a playwright on the famous New York stage during Second Stage Theater's 2024, 2025 season. Cult of Love previously ran at IAMA Theatre Company in Los Angeles in 2018. It also appeared at Berkeley Repertory Theatre that same year before its Broadway run. The neo-noir style play The Layover received mixed reviews when it premiered in 2016. Dramatists Play Service published Assistance in late 2013 making it available to wider audiences.

  • Headland grew up watching Marx Brothers films and MGM musicals alongside her strict religious background. Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window taught her early that camera could function as a storytelling tool. She realized what a director actually did after viewing that specific film during her youth. David Fincher's Fight Club became the reason she maintains an artistic need to joke about pain. Headland notes the difficulty and dark time she faced due to the September 11 attacks while completing her degree. Addiction plays heavily into many of her projects throughout her career. She stated she is attracted to stories about people who have created prisons for themselves. Her goal involves showing characters trying to get out of those self-imposed constraints. This thematic focus connects her Christian upbringing with modern psychological exploration in her work.
