  • Kylian Mbappé stood in a stadium of 80,000 people on the 16th of July 2024, wearing the number 9 shirt of Real Madrid. He was 25 years old. Just nine years earlier, he had been a teenager at Monaco's reserve team, brought on by coach Leonardo Jardim because he looked too good to be kept off the main pitch. Now the club he had dreamed of as a boy was unveiling him to a crowd that filled the Santiago Bernabéu.

How does a child from the northeastern suburbs of Paris become, in the span of a decade, the most expensive teenage footballer ever signed, a two-time World Cup finalist hat-trick scorer, and the man who broke Iván Zamorano's record for goals in a Real Madrid debut season? The answers begin in Bondy, in a family with roots in Cameroon and Algeria, and run through a transfer saga that lasted seven years and ended with the words he posted on the day he signed: "It's a dream come true."

  • Bondy, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department northeast of Paris, is where Mbappé spent his childhood. His father, Wilfrid Mbappé, is a football coach originally from the Cameroonian island that is home to the Sawa people. His mother and agent, Fayza Lamari, is of Algerian Kabyle origin and was a former handball player. The family also includes a younger brother, Ethan, who plays football for Lille, and an older adopted brother, Jirès Kembo Ekoko, a former professional footballer.

At a private Catholic school in Bondy, Mbappé was seen as academically gifted but unruly. He started with AS Bondy at the age of six, with his father among his first coaches. By the time he was eleven, Real Madrid had already invited him to train with their under-12 teams. Chelsea arranged a match for him against Charlton Athletic when he was fourteen, during a trip to London on their invitation. At fourteen, he joined the Monaco youth academy in July 2013, the club managing to secure a three-year contract with him despite Real Madrid's continued interest.

His football idols as a teenager were Zinedine Zidane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Ronaldinho, Lionel Messi, Ronaldo Nazario, Eden Hazard, and Thierry Henry. He took Spanish lessons at fifteen and eventually became fluent. In May 2024, just days before his transfer to Real Madrid was announced, Mbappé said he still followed AC Milan and would like to play for them one day.

  • On the 2nd of December 2015, a sixteen-year-old Mbappé made his Monaco first-team debut in a 1-1 draw against Caen in Ligue 1, becoming the club's youngest-ever first-team player. He broke the previous record held by Thierry Henry, which dated to 1994. On the 20th of February 2016, he scored his first senior goal, becoming the youngest first-team goalscorer in Monaco's history as well. On the 6th of March, he signed his first professional contract.

Monaco's vice-president Vadim Vasilyev told CNN early on that Mbappé was a "phenomenon." Striker Radamel Falcao became a key influence that 2016-17 season, teaching the teenager to be "calm" and "serene" during matches and giving him space to express himself. Mbappé ended that campaign with 26 goals from 44 matches in all competitions as Monaco won the Ligue 1 title.

In the Champions League quarter-finals that spring, Mbappé scored twice in the first leg against Borussia Dortmund as Monaco won 3-2, then opened the scoring in the second leg, a 3-1 win, to send the club through. Monaco were ultimately eliminated by Juventus with a 4-1 loss, but the teenage forward had announced himself to European football. On the 5th of March 2017, he became the youngest player in thirty years to reach ten Ligue 1 goals.

  • On the 31st of August 2017, Paris Saint-Germain announced Mbappé's signing from Monaco on loan with a mandatory purchase option of €180 million. PSG's assistant sporting director Luis Ferrer credited manager Unai Emery's convincing speech at the Mbappé family home over the summer as a deciding factor. The fee made Mbappé the most expensive teenager ever and the second-most-expensive player ever, behind teammate Neymar, and set a record for the largest transfer within a domestic league. He was given the number 29 shirt on arrival.

Over nearly seven seasons, Mbappé won six Ligue 1 titles with the club. His contract, extended in 2022, reportedly included a monthly wage of £4 million according to Sky Sports, making him the highest-paid player in the world at the time, along with a reported signing-on figure in the region of £100 million. He won the Ligue 1 Player of the Year award five times and finished as the league's top scorer a record six consecutive seasons. In the 2021-22 season he became the first player in the league's history to finish as both top scorer and top assist provider in the same campaign, providing 17 assists alongside 28 goals.

In early March 2023, he scored his 201st goal for PSG in a 4-2 win over Nantes, becoming the club's all-time leading scorer. On the 3rd of January 2024, he became the all-time top goalscorer at the Parc des Princes with 111 goals, surpassing that mark during a Trophée des Champions win over Toulouse. His final match for the club on the 25th of May 2024 ended with a Coupe de France title as PSG defeated Lyon, the trophy secured on his last day in Paris red and blue.

The Champions League remained the one gap in his PSG trophy cabinet. He led the club to their first-ever Champions League final in 2019-20, but PSG lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich on the 23rd of August 2020.

  • On the 31st of August 2017, Mbappé scored his first senior international goal for France in a 2018 World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, he scored his first World Cup goal in a 1-0 group-stage win over Peru on the 21st of June, becoming the youngest French goalscorer in World Cup history. On the 30th of June, a 4-3 win over Argentina in the round of 16 saw him score twice, only the second teenager to score two goals in a World Cup match after Pelé in 1958. At the post-match press conference, Mbappé said: "It's flattering to be the second one after Pelé but let's put things into context - Pelé is in another category." On the 15th of July, he scored in the 4-2 final victory over Croatia, becoming the second teenager after Pelé to score in a World Cup final. Pelé congratulated him on social media.

At the 2022 World Cup final on the 18th of December, France trailed Argentina 2-0 with just over ten minutes remaining. Mbappé scored twice in two minutes, the second a volley after a one-two with Marcus Thuram. In extra time, with Argentina ahead again, Mbappé converted a penalty to level at 3-3. France lost on penalty kicks, but Mbappé had scored a hat-trick in the final, only the second player in history to do so. He won the Golden Boot with eight goals and became the sixth all-time top scorer in World Cup history with twelve goals across two tournaments, tied with Pelé. His four goals across the two finals made him the all-time top scorer in World Cup final matches.

On the 21st of March 2023, following Hugo Lloris's international retirement, manager Didier Deschamps named Mbappé the new captain of France. In his first match as captain, France beat the Netherlands 4-0 with Mbappé scoring twice and assisting another goal. On the 13th of November 2025, he scored twice in a 4-0 win against Ukraine, reaching 400 career goals, and became the youngest player to reach that milestone since Pelé in 1964.

  • On the 3rd of June 2024, Real Madrid announced that Mbappé had signed a five-year contract with the club, ending what the club described as a seven-year transfer saga. On the 14th of August 2024, he made his debut in the UEFA Super Cup against Atalanta, scoring the second goal of a 2-0 win.

His debut La Liga season shattered records. On the 25th of January 2025, he scored his first hat-trick for Madrid in a 3-0 win over Real Valladolid. On the 19th of February, he recorded his first Champions League hat-trick for the club in a 3-1 win over Manchester City. On the 11th of May, his hat-trick in an El Clásico loss to Barcelona brought him to 39 goals for Madrid, breaking Iván Zamorano's record for most goals scored by a Real Madrid player in their debut season. His 28th league goal that following game set a further record for most La Liga goals by a Madrid player in a debut campaign.

Mbappé finished his La Liga debut season with 31 goals in 34 games, winning both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Shoe for the first time. On the 28th of May 2025, he was named Madrid's Player of the Season.

In his second season, he switched to the number 10 shirt. On the 16th of September 2025, he became the fastest player to score 50 goals for Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo. Late in November, a hat-trick against Olympiacos was completed in six minutes and 42 seconds, the second-fastest hat-trick in Champions League history. He concluded the 2025-26 season with 25 La Liga goals, a second consecutive Pichichi Trophy, and 15 Champions League goals to finish as the competition's top scorer.

  • Mbappé's trademark goal celebration, posing with his arms folded and hands tucked under his armpits, was not designed by a marketing team. His younger brother Ethan created it while celebrating at FIFA video games whenever he beat Kylian. Mbappé appeared on the cover of FIFA 21.

His philanthropy has been quiet but specific. On the 28th of January 2019, he donated $34,000 to a crowdfunding campaign to fund a private search for missing footballer Emiliano Sala, whose light aircraft had disappeared over the English Channel. He donated £27,000 more on the 10th of February to fund the search for the plane's pilot, David Ibbotson. On the 22nd of February 2018, he met French president Emmanuel Macron and FIFA president Gianni Infantino alongside former African strikers George Weah and Didier Drogba to discuss a sports development project in Africa, saying his parents' African origins made the continent's development important to him.

In a 2018 interview with Time, Mbappé described the cost of his early rise: "I did not have the moments of so-called normal people during adolescence, like going out with friends, enjoying good times." He said his life was "totally turned upside down" after he became famous. By 2023, he had more than 100 million followers on Instagram. He is fluent in French, English, and Spanish, and is a practicing Christian.

On the 30th of July 2024, an investment firm linked to Mbappé's company Interconnected Ventures acquired an 80% stake in Ligue 2 club Caen for a reported €15 million, bringing him back, in ownership form, to the club that had tracked him for three years as a teenager but lost him when they were relegated from Ligue 1 in 2012.
