  • Jana Nayagan is a Tamil-language political action thriller that was meant to open in cinemas on the 9th of January 2026. It never did. H. Vinoth directed it for KVN Productions, and it stars Vijay, one of Tamil cinema's biggest names. It is intended to be his final screen role before he moves into politics. Yet a pirated copy reached audiences before any ticket was officially sold. How did a film with record-setting trailers, record-priced rights and a stadium launch end up stuck between a censorship board and the courts? Why did a farewell role draw sharp criticism before anyone had seen it? And what did all of it cost?

  • On the 2nd of February 2024, Vijay announced on his social media accounts that he would step into politics after finishing his ongoing projects. One was The Greatest of All Time (2024). The other carried only a placeholder title, Thalapathy 69, because it would be his 69th film as a lead actor. Guesses about the director came fast. The Times of India suggested Karthik Subbaraj, with Sun Pictures producing. Pinkvilla named Anil Ravipudi, H. Vinoth, Subbaraj and Atlee as possibilities. Vetrimaaran emerged later, then confirmed in March that he was not involved. Director RJ Balaji revealed that Vijay had considered scripts from 15-20 directors, Balaji among them.

The script that won had a longer history. In 2017, while Vinoth was working on Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru and Vijay on Mersal, Vinoth narrated it to the actor, who declined. Vinoth then took it to Kamal Haasan, who was impressed and signed him for his 233rd film. That project was shelved because Haasan's Indian 2 (2024) ran late. Vinoth returned to Vijay, who reportedly accepted. The deal reportedly made Vijay the highest-paid Indian actor, ahead of Shah Rukh Khan and Rajinikanth.

In August 2024, Vinoth confirmed he was directing, receiving 15-20 crore. Venkat K. Narayana's KVN Productions would fund the film, its first Tamil venture. Vijay's manager, Jagadish Palanisamy, and Lohith N. K. joined as co-producers. The team planned to announce the project on the 22nd of June, Vijay's birthday, with shooting to begin the following month. Vijay asked for that to be postponed. The company confirmed the project publicly on the 14th of September, and the title Jana Nayagan followed on the 26th of January 2025, Republic Day. A larger question would soon trail the film, and it had nothing to do with the director. It was about where the story came from.

  • When the trailer appeared in January 2026, viewers began comparing Jana Nayagan with Bhagavanth Kesari, a 2023 Telugu film. Within a week, Bhagavanth Kesari producer Sahu Garapati confirmed to The New Indian Express that Jana Nayagan is a remake. Writer-director Anil Ravipudi would receive a credit. KVN Productions reportedly bought the rights mainly for one scene about child abuse, which had left a strong impression on Vijay. In a January 2026 interview, Ravipudi said Vijay had insisted he direct the Tamil version. He declined because of other plans.

That sat awkwardly beside what Vinoth had said earlier. He had promised a film made completely in Vijay's style, unlike his own previous work, which he considered political. The poster had already muddied the genre. Its tagline, "torch bearer of democracy", led some media to question what kind of film this was. After the trailer, social media users and industry observers pointed to strong similarities with the Telugu hit. The backlash contradicted Vinoth's earlier claim of originality and dampened expectations.

NDTV and The Hindu reported that a key question remained. Why would Vijay sign off with a remake when an original political drama or a full-fledged action film could have made a bigger impact? Critics and audiences noted that his final film carried enormous expectations. A remake, they suggested, might not make the most of them. The film had still appeared on lists of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2025 from The Indian Express, Cinema Express, OTT Play and The Times of India. Those lists were compiled before the trailer ever appeared.

  • The muhurat puja, the ceremonial launch, took place on the 4th of October 2024 at Prime Studio in Chennai. It fell on the second day of Navaratri, and the cast and crew attended. Sathyan Sooryan was named cinematographer. It was his second film with Vinoth after Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017), and his second with Vijay after Master (2021). Anirudh Ravichander would score the music, his first collaboration with the director. Vinoth also brought in editor Pradeep E. Ragav, stunt choreographer Anl Arasu, art director V. Selvakumar and costume designer Pallavi Singh. Sekhar VJ and Sudhan handled choreography. Gopi Prasannaa stayed on as publicity designer, and Ramkumar Balasubramaniam was appointed executive producer.

Pooja Hegde was confirmed as the female lead, her second film with Vijay after Beast (2022). It was also her fourth Tamil film, following Mugamoodi (2012), Beast and Retro (2025). After the formal launch, her statement "Halamithi and Habibo Reunites" went viral. It referenced "Arabic Kuthu", the first single from Beast. Bobby Deol, a Hindi actor, was cast as the main antagonist in his second Tamil film after Kanguva (2024).

Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, Priyamani and Prakash Raj took prominent roles. Menon's earlier film with Vijay was Leo (2023). Raj was working with Vijay for the seventh time, after films including Ghilli (2004) and Varisu (2023). The Malayalam actress Mamitha Baiju made her second Tamil film after Rebel (2024). Monisha Blessy appeared at the puja, Teejay Arunasalam and Reba Monica John joined in prominent roles, and Revathi was reportedly cast as Vijay's mother. She had last worked with him on Thamizhan (2002). Shiva Rajkumar said Vinoth approached him for an important role, but the offer was withdrawn for reasons unknown. A sequence with directors Lokesh Kanagaraj, Nelson Dilipkumar and Atlee in cameo appearances was shot in March 2025. Cameras rolled the day after the puja.

  • Five hundred background artists filled a vast set at Prasad Studios in Chennai for the first shot. It was a song sequence for Vijay and Pooja Hegde, choreographed by Sekhar, on a set V. Selvakumar had supervised since September. It wrapped on the 10th of October. Vinoth reportedly finished some portions in 8 days that were meant to take 10. The second schedule was first planned for Hyderabad, but production stayed in Chennai at Vijay's request. The team built a huge set at Payanoor, near Chennai, and the schedule began on the 4th of November once Vijay had finished his political commitments.

During that schedule, Vijay and Vinoth met soldiers and their families at the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. In mid-November the crew shot at AVIT and Vinayaka Mission Law College, then moved to Thiruporur, where a set was built for action sequences. After a reported seven days of rehearsals, an action sequence between Vijay and Deol ran for three weeks. The second schedule ended on the 21st of December at a beach in Chennai. About 40 percent of the film was reportedly shot by then.

The third schedule, expected in January 2025, did not start on time. Pinkvilla reported that the makers hoped to finish by May 2025 so Vijay could focus on politics. In late January, the production house said around 69 percent of filming was complete. Shooting resumed in early February in Chennai. During it, Vijay met a fan named Unnikannan, who had walked from Kerala to see him. In late February, Vijay paused to attend to his political commitments. On the 8th of March 2025, he posted a video from the set wishing women a happy International Women's Day.

Vijay finished his portions by the 29th of May. The producers planned a farewell event for him, but he declined, saying he would become too emotional. Pooja Hegde announced on the 15th of June that she had finished hers. The last locations were Sivaganga and Erode in late July. Principal photography wrapped by August 2025. Post-production began at once, with Monesh H supervising visual effects and Prasath Somasekar as colourist at Knack Studios. Anirudh confirmed in December that the background score and final mixing were still in progress.

  • Composing began in September 2024. Anirudh Ravichander was working with Vijay for the fifth time, after Kaththi (2014), Master (2021), Beast (2022) and Leo (2023). T-Series bought the audio rights at what was described as the highest price for a Tamil film. It was the label's third album with Anirudh, after Jawan (2023) and Devara (2024). Vijay was reported to sing one track, with rap written and performed by Asal Kolaar. In May 2025, the Indian-American rapper Hanumankind confirmed he had contributed a powerful song. Four singles followed. "Thalapathy Kacheri" came on the 8th of November 2025. "Oru Pere Varalaaru" arrived on the 18th of December and became the most-viewed Tamil song within 24 hours, with over 26 million views. "Chella Magale" followed on the 26th of December and "Raavana Mavandaa" on the 2nd of January 2026.

The first-look poster appeared on the 26th of January 2025 and revealed the title. It shows Vijay's character taking a selfie, inspired by a real selfie he took in Neyveli during the making of Master in February 2020. A second poster showed him holding a whip, captioned "Naan Aanai Ittaal" after a song from Enga Veettu Pillai (1965). A 65-second glimpse on the 22nd of June 2025, Vijay's 51st birthday, drew over 32.4 million views in 24 hours. Bollywood Hungama's critic described it opening with the voiceover "You guys will live in my heart", followed by Vijay in police uniform with a katana. In July 2025, the official Wimbledon Championships account honored champion Jannik Sinner with a post inspired by the first look.

The audio launch, titled "Thalapathy Thiruvizha , Jana Nayagan Audio Launch", took place at Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on the 27th of December 2025. Anirudh performed with singers including Anuradha Sriram, S. P. Charan and Andrea Jeremiah. He teased a medley honoring his work with Vijay. More than 100,000 people attended, earning an entry in The Malaysia Book of Records for the largest crowd at an event in Malaysia. The trailer, released on the 3rd of January 2026, passed 5 million views in 5 minutes and 83.7 million across three languages in 24 hours.

The money followed the buzz. Tamil Nadu theatrical rights alone sold for 106.5 crore, the highest ever for a film. KVN sold them area by area, with S Picture, Five Star Senthil, Cinemakaaran and Trident Arts among the buyers. Zee Studios took North India, PVR Inox Pictures took Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and SSR Entertainment took Kerala. Overseas, Prime Media took the United States, York Cinemas Canada, and Ahimsa Entertainment and Boleyn Cinema the United Kingdom. Rights also went to buyers in territories from Europe to Japan. UK pre-bookings opened on the 17th of December 2025 and sold over 12,700 tickets in 24 hours, beating the 10,000 set by Leo. US shows sold out within minutes, and in France the first show sold out within minutes and the rest within 30 minutes. Amazon Prime Video bought post-theatrical rights in March 2025 for a record Tamil price, and Zee Tamil bought satellite rights for the highest Tamil satellite deal.

  • KVN Productions submitted the film to the Central Board of Film Certification, or CBFC, on the 18th of December 2025. Despite reportedly agreeing to minor cuts, the producers got no final certificate. The film was meant to appear in Tamil, Telugu as Jana Nayakudu, Hindi as Jan Neta, Kannada and Malayalam. The makers had already pushed the release back once, announcing on the 24th of March 2025 that it would move from October 2025. On the 6th of January 2026, the producers went to the Madras High Court, alleging the certificate was being unreasonably withheld.

In court, it emerged that an examining committee had recommended a U/A certificate. CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi then referred the film to a Revising Committee after a complaint about its brief portrayal of religious sentiments and the armed forces. The producers asked how anyone could complain about a film that had not been publicly screened. At the hearing on the 7th of January, they noted that 25 other countries had cleared it, including a "15" rating from the British Board of Film Classification. Justice P.T. Asha questioned the CBFC's transparency, saying it seemed to be reopening a settled matter.

On the 9th of January, the court directed the CBFC to grant a UA 16+ certificate. It warned that entertaining such complaints would "lead to a dangerous trend". The CBFC appealed immediately, and a division bench stayed the order until the 21st of January. KVN took the matter to the Supreme Court on the 12th of January. On the 15th, the Supreme Court declined to hear the plea and sent the producers back to the division bench. On the 9th of February, KVN withdrew its writ petition and submitted the film to the Revising Committee. A screening set for the 9th of March was called off at the last minute because a committee member fell ill.

The delay drew condemnation from film figures and politicians. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin accused the Union government of politicising the CBFC. On the 13th of January, Rahul Gandhi called the I&B Ministry's actions an "attack on Tamil culture". Kamal Haasan argued on the 10th of January that "freedom of expression should never be diminished by opacity". Ram Gopal Varma called the CBFC "outdated", Pa. Ranjith said it was "extremely deplorable", and Karthik Subbaraj urged industry unity to "save cinema". Congress leaders B. Manickam Tagore and Jothimani called the delay an attack on freedom of expression. Actors including Ravi Mohan, Silambarasan, Jiiva and Jai voiced support.

On the 29th of January, Mansoor Ali Khan sarcastically asked whether the film, meant for Pongal in January, would be cleared only by Bakrid. On the 22nd of February, Vishal said more than 1,500 Nadigar Sangam members might strike against the CBFC. Some fans were disappointed that Vijay, now president of the TVK party, issued no official response. In May 2026, BookMyShow and District by Zomato listed the 19th of June 2026 as a release date, three days before Vijay's 52nd birthday. The producers never confirmed it, and no certificate had been granted by late May.

  • On the 9th of April 2026, about five minutes of footage appeared online, reportedly including the title sequence, the introduction and parts of the climax. The production team tried to have the clips removed. Reports then emerged that the full film was on piracy websites in high definition. The Cyber Crime Wing of the Tamil Nadu Police registered a case on the producers' complaint. It announced the arrest of three main accused, including a freelance assistant editor, for the data theft and leak. Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju and Bobby Deol called the event a "disheartening and disappointing situation". Many South Indian actors condemned the piracy.

Politics followed quickly. According to Deccan Herald, TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna alleged that Union Minister L. Murugan had used his influence over the CBFC in connection with the leak. BJP leader K. Annamalai rejected any link to Murugan or the party, and the CBFC denied leaking the film. The Madras High Court issued an ad-interim injunction against cable operators and internet service providers. It barred them from broadcasting or enabling access to pirated copies until the 2nd of June 2026. An opinion column in The Indian Express found claims of outside sabotage inconsistent. It noted that the leak had amplified public attention for Vijay and his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, and raised the possibility, without direct evidence, that Vijay himself had benefited.

The damage to the business was reported as severe. Tamil Nadu distributor Tirupur Subramaniam estimated losses of ₹300 crore to ₹400 crore. A previously negotiated over-the-top streaming deal, valued at over ₹120 crore, was reportedly withdrawn after the leak. Some stakeholders reassessed or withdrew agreements, and the producers' bargaining power weakened. Earlier, on the 12th of March 2026, Amazon Prime Video had reportedly pulled out of its post-theatrical deal, citing the certification delays. The film was reported to be loss-making before its release.

Other controversies attached themselves to the film. After the Karur tragedy, social media allegations claimed the gathering was linked to filming scenes for Jana Nayagan. TVK leaders denied it, calling the event solely a political rally and the claims fabricated. Vijay and his party alleged that the investigation and the film's delays were part of a broader political conspiracy. Opponents rejected that and criticised his handling of the rally. In 2026, an industry insider cited by ETV Bharat said KVN Productions was also facing hurdles with other large projects, including Toxic and KD: The Devil. One plan from the earlier deals still stands on paper. The Hindi-dubbed version is set to stream only after an 8-week theatrical release, and that run has not yet begun.
